Ghaziabad: Traffic police have identified 41,183 vehicles with five or more pending challans from Jan 2022 to July 2023. Of these, details of 8,500 vehicles—more than 60% of them commercial—have been forwarded to the regional transport office (RTO) for suspension of driving licences (DLs) and registration certificates (RCs).

Additional DCP (traffic) Sachidanand told TOI that so far, notices have been issued to 200 vehicle owners, warning them of strict action under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, if dues remain unpaid. The notices warn vehicle owners that failure to clear dues within 15 days will lead to suspension of registration and licence, with RCs liable to be cancelled for up to six months and DLs suspended for three months.
Officials said the move to seek cancellation of licences stems from two concerns— non-payment of fines and rising accidents caused by repeat traffic violations.
Data analysis by the traffic police showed a direct link between frequent violations such as speeding, drunk driving, wrong-side driving, and jumping signals and the rising number of road mishaps in the region. "Our analysis shows a fair number of drivers habitually flout rules.
Such offenders are a serious threat to other road users. Road accidents have been rising over the past three to four years, and repeat violations are a major factor.
That is why we have written to the transport department to cancel their licences," Sachidanand said.
According to the additional DCP, 30 vehicles alone were issued challans for more than 100 violations during this period, none of which have been cleared.

"I have asked all ACPs and traffic inspectors to trace these vehicles and seize them within three days," he said.
Data shared by the traffic department shows the vehicle with the highest number of challans is a Bullet bike — Royal Enfield 350 (UP14EN5355) — with 184 challans, none of which have been paid. Second on the list is a bus (UP14HT9765), which accumulated 213 challans over the last three years; the owner has cleared only 50, leaving 163 unpaid.
A TVS Sports bike (UP14EK3759) ranks third with 146 challans, followed by an LMB Chevrolet Beat (HR29Y4222) with 136 challans. In fifth place is an auto-rickshaw (UP14LT8234) with 133 challans.
PK Singh, RTO Ghaziabad, confirmed that the transport department has received details of repeat offenders and issued notices. "We have served notices to such repeat offenders and asked them to reply within two weeks," he said. Failing to do so will result in the suspension of a vehicle's registration and driving licence under MV Act sections 53 (suspension of registration) and 54 (cancellation of registration) and Section 19, read with Section 21, of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1986, he said.
This year alone, between Jan 1 and July 31, police issued 764,742 challans to traffic violators. The most common offence was riding without helmets (3,28,588 challans), followed by wrong-side driving (1,24,842 challans).

Sundargarh, Ganjam among 100 most accident-prone dists in country: Survey

Bhubaneswar: A recent letter from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) to the state transport department has identified Sundargarh and Ganjam as two of the 100 most accident-prone districts in the country. The ministry, in reference to a survey carried out by a private road safety agency, ranked Sundargarh in 84th place and Ganjam at 90th for road accidents and fatalities. According to the state transport department, Sundargarh reported 902 accidents resulting in 521 deaths and 701 injuries in 2024. Ganjam witnessed 820 accidents, with 392 fatalities and 710 injuries last year. "Following MoRTH's communication, we convened a meeting with Sundargarh and Ganjam district authorities. We are implementing effective measures to enhance road safety and reduce accidents," state transport commissioner Amitabh Thakur told TOI. Odisha Police sources indicated that two-wheeler collisions accounted for the highest fatalities in Sundargarh, with around 120 deaths (23%), while hit-and-run incidents resulted in at least 106 fatalities (20.3%) in the district last year. In Ganjam, speeding involving two-wheelers was the primary cause of accidents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Your Finger Shape Says a Lot About Your Personality, Read Now Tips and Tricks Undo Police sources said 60% of the deceased were not wearing helmets. Last year, Ganjam reported 171 deaths on national highways and 110 on state highways, police sources informed. The district has 328.81 km of national highways and 491.87 km of state highways. Golanthara, Khallikote, Digapahandi and Sadar police station areas recorded the most accidents in Ganjam. The transport department plans to install cameras under the Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) to curb traffic violations in Sundargarh and Ganjam. "We also intend to establish Road Accident Investigation and Support Enforcement (RAISE) teams, comprising police officers and road safety experts, to conduct crash investigations and study high accident-prone areas. They will propose comprehensive solutions," a transport official said. "We have asked the police to step up enforcement drives against violators of road safety rules. Local communities and NGOs will be engaged in road safety campaigns. Driving licence of drivers causing severe accidents will be suspended," the official added. The govt has mandated forensic analysis of fatal road accidents to ensure a more scientific approach to crash investigations. State transport secretary Usha Padhee, in a recent meeting with police and regional transport officers, stressed on the importance of thorough forensic analysis of severe road accidents. 30 camera traps installed in Bonai forest division to capture ‘tiger' presence

1 2 Rourkela: Following reports of a possible tiger's presence in Sundargarh, wildlife officials have strategically installed 30 camera traps at Jarda and Sole forest ranges in the district's Bonai forest division. "Given the animal's movement pattern, we anticipate its entry into the adjacent Bonai forest division in the district," Lalit Kumar Patra, divisional forest officer of Bonai forest division, said on Wednesday. Last week, pugmarks were spotted near Ujalpur forest range in Sundargarh forest division, prompting wildlife officials to initiate a thorough investigation, suspecting the presence of a tiger in the vicinity. Earlier, Chhattisgarh forest department had alerted its counterparts in Odisha about a suspected tiger's presence at Lephripada in Sundargarh forest division, which had possibly come from Gomarda wildlife sanctuary in Raigarh. It was speculated that the tiger might have moved to Athkosia reserve forest in Ujalpur forest range. In response, the wildlife wing issued an advisory to the Sundargarh forest division, urging the installation of camera traps at various locations to monitor the suspected big cat. Camera traps were subsequently set up in Lephripada range and Athkosia reserve forest, with an alert issued to locals. Residents were advised to avoid entering the forest and refrain from leaving their cattle and goats unattended. Forest officials have intensified patrolling efforts in Lephripada and Ujalpur forest ranges. The tiger's presence was further suspected when pugmarks were spotted in Sadar forest range on Aug 15, following an attack on a cow. Despite the installation of camera traps and increased patrolling by forest officials in Sadar and Bamra forest divisions, the animal could not be captured on camera. Reports suggest that the animal then moved to Bagdih forest range in Jharsuguda forest division. The suspected tiger reportedly travelled 150km in five days, reaching the Kholbilung section under Bamra forest division in Sambalpur district. Pugmarks near a pond in Kholbilung village confirmed the presence of a Royal Bengal tiger. Though camera traps were installed in strategic locations, the tiger is yet to be captured on film. Mangalwari–Kadbi Chowk flyover: Bone-Rattling Ride For Commuters

Nagpur: The Mangalwari–Kadbi flyover, a vital connector between Mangalwari Market and Kadbi Chowk, has become a nightmare for hundreds of commuters, with its surface now riddled with deep potholes, and even an iron rod sticking out at one place. Serving as a crucial link between North Nagpur and West Nagpur, the flyover was intended to ease congestion on the city's arterial routes. Instead, its deteriorating condition has turned it into a major hazard, particularly for two-wheeler riders who face the risk of skidding and accidents every day. Motorists say that negotiating the flyover has become a test of patience and skill. Vehicles are forced to slow down at multiple spots where the surface has caved in, leading to bottlenecks and frequent traffic snarls. "Every evening, it takes us 15–20 minutes extra just to cross this stretch. The potholes are so deep that even cars get jolted badly," said a commuter from Sadar. Several residents also complained about damage to their vehicles due to the uneven surface. Despite repeated complaints from citizens and local associations, no significant repair work has been undertaken. Potholes that existed before the monsoon have already given way, and with rain lashing, it has created gravel mounds and loose surfaces that worsen the risk for bikers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Locals allege that sheer lack of upkeep has left the structure in disrepair. According to sources, the responsibility of maintaining and repairing the flyover lies with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). However, NMC's chief engineer Manoj Talewar did not respond to calls or messages from TOI seeking clarification on whether immediate repairs were planned. With monsoon showers still lashing the city, commuters fear that the situation could worsen further, possibly leading to serious accidents. Residents have urged NMC to take urgent action before the flyover becomes unusable. "The flyover is critical for daily traffic flow. If authorities continue to ignore it, it will not only cause accidents but also disrupt connectivity between key parts of the city," said Digvesh Shah, a local resident. For now, motorists have no option but to endure slow-moving traffic and constant risk on a stretch that was once designed to ease their commute.
