Is Duolingo Stock a Buy in the Second Half of 2025?

Duolingo delivered a record performance in 2024.
It has the potential to sustain its growth momentum for the foreseeable future.
The stock's high valuation should give investors pause.
10 stocks we like better than Duolingo ›
Duolingo (NASDAQ: DUOL) stock has been on fire recently. In the last 12 months, it has risen 164% due to strong financial results and growth prospects.
If you missed out on that impressive rally, you may now be considering initiating a position in the stock. Here's what you need to know about this high-growth tech company.
Duolingo offers the world's No. 1 language learning app, and it enjoyed a stellar 2024. All key metrics, including revenue, bookings, and net income, reached record levels. Revenue surged 41% to $748 million, while net income rose more than sixfold from $14 million to $89 million.
And the company kicked off 2025 with a bang as well. For the first quarter, revenue jumped 38% year over year to $231 million, and bookings increased 38% to $272 million. Its adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margin also improved about 900 basis points to 27.2% for the quarter.
The foundation of that strong performance is steady user growth. Monthly active users (MAU) reached 130.2 million, up 33% year over year. Daily active users saw an even bigger boost, up 49% to 46.6 million.
But overall user growth is just one part of the story. Duolingo is also improving its paid subscriber penetration rate, which increased year over year from 8.6% to 8.9%. Ongoing improvements to its content and user experience have led to better user engagement. The app's virtual assistant Lily, for example, allows Duolingo Max subscribers to practice their language skills in a fun, low-stakes environment to help them gain confidence over time.
Despite the company's already impressive reach and scale, its has a long growth runway. Management says the online language learning industry will be worth $47 billion in 2025, just a small slice of the $6 trillion of annual global education spending.
The company also estimates 2 billion people worldwide are learning a new language. And of its 130.2 million MAUs, less than one in 10 are paying subscribers, giving the tech company a huge opportunity to grow its user base and convert them over time.
To this end, Duolingo's continuous improvement efforts should significantly contribute to attracting, retaining, and converting normal learners to paid subscribers. It has added new subjects, such as music and math, in an effort to expand beyond its language courses.
Introducing artificial intelligence to the platform is another example of how Duolingo is working to improve learning outcomes. The company plans to enhance the user experience by making Lily and her environment 3D with interactive backgrounds to make conversations more immersive for learners.
While there are many things to like about Duolingo's solid execution and growth prospects, the stock doesn't come cheap. As of this writing, it boasts a price-to-earnings ratio of more than 250. Even if you believe this is a growth-first story and focus on its price-to-sales valuation instead, at 30 times trailing revenue, Duolingo is one of the most expensive large-cap stocks in the Nasdaq Composite index.
A premium is expected for most growth stocks, but paying such a hefty price comes with significant risk. Even a small hiccup that calls Duolingo's bullish outlook into question could see its valuation contract dramatically.
That potential for short-term volatility, however, shouldn't immediately scare investors away from a company that's clearly firing on all cylinders as it tackles a massive market opportunity. With that in mind, a position in Duolingo makes the most sense for investors with a long investment horizon of at least five years -- or an immense risk appetite.

Interface Introduces Global Carpet Tile and LVT Collections Made for Timeless Interiors

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Interface, Inc. (NASDAQ: TILE), the global flooring solutions company and leader in sustainability, today launched the Dressed Lines™ carpet tile and Lasting Impressions™ luxury vinyl tile (LVT) global collections. Both collections lean into the company's legacy of smart design, creating a complete design experience and bringing a modern lens to design classics with innovative patterns, constructions, and manufacturing processes. "Each offers a new perspective on tradition and a new chance to challenge the way we design and experience spaces." The Dressed Lines carpet tile collection is inspired by post-war modernism, reflected in its playful use of contrast and angular shapes. Lasting Impressions LVT offers a different take on timeless visuals, drawing on the traditional crafts of tatami and plaster artisans. These collections feature high-performing styles that connect to the past. 'Design is meant to tell a story. One that highlights nature, the human experience, and how we work, learn, and live together. That thinking inspired Dressed Lines and Lasting Impressions – two collections defined by distinct moments of the past that feel undeniably fresh today,' said Kelly Simcox, Head of Global Design at Interface. 'These collections are made for unmatched versatility, effortless coordination, and timeless interiors. They reflect the idea that modular flooring can be more and do more for our commercial spaces. Each offers a new perspective on tradition and a new chance to challenge the way we design and experience spaces.' Dressed Lines: Tailored and Timeless Dressed Lines is a fresh take on timeless designs, inspired by post-war modernism and 1950s fashion. It captures the essence of mid-century design, taking notes from pioneering designers like Anni Albers, Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Knoll. The result is a tailored, crisp, and sharp collection, featuring sophisticated, small-scale, and high-contrast patterns made to reflect dress fabric. The collection features six styles with eight complementary color combinations ranging from warm neutrals to high-contrast accents. It includes: Goes Around™ and Comes Around™: The two foundational styles feature patterns that build on each other, bridging the gap between fashion and interiors with two distinct pinstripe looks reminiscent of formal wear. Both products are offered in 25 cm x 1 m formats. Angular Times™ and Accent Hour™: These products urge designers to go bolder, with angular patterns and pops of white accents that add extra dimension to the floorscape. They are offered in 25 cm x 1 m formats. Simple Does It™ and Positive Spin™: Both provide unmatched versatility, pairing texture and contrast with speckled and cubed designs made to round out interior spaces. These styles are available in 50 cm x 50 cm square formats. Dressed Lines, with its smart design, blends subtle, subdued patterns that work best in open areas with bolder, more complicated designs that emerge as the focal point in any space. It is also designed to coordinate effortlessly with the popular Third Space™ carpet tile collection that Interface launched in 2023. And with a low carbon footprint and superior performance benefits, the collection hits the highest marks for innovation, design, and climate progress. With this collection, Interface meets the needs of today's commercial spaces, offering designers a woven-inspired LVT pattern with lots of visual texture and a plaster look designed to camouflage wear and tear. The collection includes two styles in a total of 12 traditional colorways – they are: Heirloom™: A new woven-inspired addition to Interface's LVT portfolio, it features visuals of tatami weaving – a fresh take on tradition. It is offered in a 25 cm x 1 m format in eight colorways. Plaster™: This style takes inspiration from hand-finishes and natural patinas, celebrating handmade irregularities. It is available in a 50 cm x 1 m format in four colorways. Lasting Impressions features Interface's Ceramor+® ceramic bead coating, which minimizes everyday scratching and scuffing and provides enhanced slip resistance. The collection is also part of Interface's 4.5 mm Sound Choice™ LVT offering, which silences distractions with backing for superior noise reduction, offering best-in-class impact sound reduction and floor-to-floor sound transmission. Wall Street futures edge lower in light trading

Wall Street futures were down marginally before the bell with earnings season winding down and much-anticipated jobs numbers landing later in the week. The Labor Department is reporting monthly job openings Tuesday. Futures for the S&P 500 fell 0.3%, as did futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Nasdaq futures are off just 0.1%. Constellation Energy climbed 14% after it announced a 20-year deal with Facebook parent company Meta to provide it with nuclear power from its Illinois plant as demand for energy to run artificial intelligence rises rapidly. A month ago, Google announced a similar partnership with Elementl Power. Dollar General shares jumped 8% after it reported a far wider profit than analysts expected and record sales. After being forced to cut its outlook in a rough 2024, the bargain chain boosted its outlook for 2025 as off-price retailers shine in a weakening economy. On the global front, Beijing and Washington dialed back trade friction slightly as the U.S. extended exemptions for tariffs on some Chinese goods, including solar manufacturing equipment, that U.S. industries rely on for their own production. The U.S. Trade Representative extended those exemptions, which were due to expire on May 31, by three months through Aug. 31. The U.S. side said President Donald Trump was expecting to speak with Chinese leader Xi Jinping this week. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said Tuesday that they had no information on that. Just a few weeks ago, the United States and China agreed to pause many tariff hikes that had threatened to drag the U.S. economy into a recession. Trump has been warning that U.S. businesses and households could feel some pain as he tries to use tariffs to bring more manufacturing jobs back to the country, and their on-and-off rollout has created lots of uncertainty. Markets in China advanced despite a report showing manufacturing activity slowed in May, even after China and the U.S. paused tariff hikes to allow time for talks. The survey of Chinese purchasing managers, or PMI, by the financial media group Caixin showed factory output, new export orders, purchasing activity and staffing all declined last month. Incoming new work contracted at the quickest pace in over two-and-a-half years. the report said. The situation is 'a body blow to the backbone of China's economy: small and mid-sized exporters now caught in a brutal vice grip between faltering global demand and a Washington-led tariff regime that's more carrot-and-stick diplomacy than ceasefire,' Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary. However, as is often the case, investors shrugged off the bad news with the assumption that it might raise the likelihood of more market support from Beijing. Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1.5% to 23,512.49, while the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.4% to 3,361.98. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 edged 0.1% lower to 37,446.81. South Korean markets were closed for a snap presidential election triggered by the ouster of Yoon Suk Yeol, a conservative who now faces an explosive trial on rebellion charges over his short-lived imposition of martial law in December. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.6% to 8,466.70. In Taiwan, the Taiex gained 0.6%, while India's Sensex lost 0.5%. In midday European trading, Germany's DAX was unchanged, while the CAC 40 in Paris shed 0.3% and Britain's FTSE 100 slipped 0.1%. U.S. benchmark crude oil was up 36 cents at $62.88 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, picked up 33 cents to $64.96 per barrel. The U.S. dollar rose to 143.10 Japanese yen from 142.71 yen. The euro slipped to $1.1391 from $1.1443.
