The 23-year-old's lovely languid strokes are a joy to behold, and come from his preference to keep the bat grounded. There is however a key flaw in his technique, as his head drifts over to the off side. Ben Stokes knew how to expose it by bowling down the leg side and finding a nick, but his keeper's fumble left him frustrated.

Things may not be quite as bad as they were in the long hot summer of 1990, when batsmen ran amok from April to September while footsore bowlers laboured with the Reader balls whose seams had been flattened by special decree from Lord's, but 2025 is proving another big year of run-making.
We are into the sixth Test match of the season — including the world Test Championship final — and have already seen 18 individual centuries, including a mammoth score of 269 from Shubman Gill, and four other innings in excess of 150. Overall, wickets have cost almost 36 runs apiece, the highest figure in an English summer since 2011.

India lost the toss yesterday for the 14th consecutive time in Tests, a one in 16,384 chance. Sky Sports's stats guru Benedict Bermange has gone one further this morning, working out the chances of five players having the same birthday, December 6, which was a distinct possibility if not for India's selection choices…

England's men's and women's fixtures for next year have been confirmed.
Ben Stokes's Test side will welcome New Zealand and Pakistan in two three-match series, while the white-ball side led by Harry Brook face India and Sri Lanka in ODI and T20 contests. Brook will also lead England in the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka
Meanwhile, Nat Sciver-Brunt's team will play New Zealand, India and Ireland, and will play a Test against India at Lord's starting on July 10. Throw in the Women's T20 World Cup to be held at home and it's a bumper year for women's cricket.
Mike Atherton, Old Trafford
Rishabh Pant is a cricketer who, on any given day, gets tongues wagging. In this series he has scored twin hundreds; has cartwheeled in celebration; has thrown his bat skywards when attempting a slog over the leg side; was run out at a critical juncture of the Lord's Test and here in Manchester his role was of the walk-on, carried-off variety only, but still of central importance given what happened.
Having made 37, Pant was in the process of gaining control for India during the final session in partnership with the willowy left-hander Sai Sudharsan. The usual wacky combination of dutiful defence and outrageous stroke play — with not much in between — had been fully in evidence when, attempting a reverse-sweep to Chris Woakes in the 68th over, he took a full toss on the outstep of his right foot and was forced to retire hurt.

A very good morning from Old Trafford where there is some blue sky and it's nice and warm. While that is the biggest news of the day, there is also some news about the on-pitch matters — Rishabh Pant has a broken foot so is almost certainly out of the rest of the match and probably series. Dhruv Jarel will keep wicket for India— as he did for most of the Lord's Test.
Big blow for India and means England effectively have the visitors five down in this innings, and they'll take the new ball straight away this morning.

Ryan Astley's header loops in to put Dundee ahead Update: Date: 20:38 BST 9 August Title: Rangers 'have to make sure aggression' is always there - Martin Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee Rangers manager Russell Martin told BBC Scotland: "I'm disappointed we didn't win the game, disappointed that we conceded a really poor goal. "There was just general lethargy and no speed in the first half. "There wasn't enough intent to disrupt them until we went down to 10 men. The mentality was much better in terms of aggression and speed with and without the ball, but it shouldn't take that. "I'm pleased with the response of the team when we went down to 10 men and we could've won the game in the end but the mentality has to come from the very first kick of the match. "In hindsight I should've made some changes to inject that energy in the team but I explained my decision before the game and maybe I could've changed that now the game is finished. "We're learning about the group all the time, so that's a lesson learnt today. "We have to make sure that aggression is there all the time. "The fans have lacked the success they want for quite some time so I understand the frustration. I didn't get too high on Tuesday so we're not going to get too low today. "We're going to give the fans something to cheer about and we will get better and better. We didn't lose today and we will improve, it'll just take some time. "Nico Raskin was great when he game on, he tackled more than the whole team. "We need at attack everything, it took us too long to attack the game tonight." Neither will run away with anything, though, they simply aren't good enough. Josh Rangers are perhaps starting to realise that their team is not as good as they were making them out to be. A lot of weaknesses are evident and will need sorting before the gap gets even wider. Celtic could arrive at Ibrox seven points clear which would put an enormous amount of pressure on this Rangers team. Martin Shocking performance from Rangers, unable to breakdown their defence, no passion or commitment and poor skill levels. What is the manager doing with these players? If they are unable or unwilling to put in the expected level of performance they should be shown the door. William Sadly Rangers still lack killer forwards. In terms of the positives, I'm not sure. Rothwell did well driving with the ball. The two wide players are going to be good players, you don't want to ask too much of them too early Antman started really well and Gassama was their main threat today. You've got to take the positives, they were getting beat with 10 minutes to go and they never gave up. Update: Date: 20:25 BST 9 August Title: Your favourite Sportscene moments! Update: Date: 19:46 BST 9 August Title: Post Content: FT: Rangers 1-1 Dundee There were boos at the final whistle, unsurprisingly. There's a European hangover, and then there's whatever Rangers seem to go through. So impressive on Tuesday, to that performance. Ryan Astley's superb header had them in a commanding position, further helped by Nasser Djiga's red card. But Djeidi Gassama, who was lively all afternoon, won a penalty and James Tavernier subsequently converted. There were shades of the loss to Queen's Park here, but they come away with a point. However, it means Rangers have failed to win their first two games in the league for the first time since 1989. Djeidi Gassama is fouled by Drey Wright in the box Update: Date: 19:39 BST 9 August Title: DISALLOWED GOAL Content: Rangers 1-1 Dundee But wait! Everton given boost in pursuit of Jack Grealish as Toffees step up efforts to sign playmaker - with Man City's £300,000-per-week outcast not part of Pep Guardiola's plan this season

Everton have been given a boost in their pursuit of Jack Grealish as the Manchester City outcast appears not to be part of Pep Guardiola 's plans this season. Daily Mail Sport previously reported that Fenerbahce were knocked back with an ambitious move for the England international. In June, we revealed how the Merseyside club were monitoring the situation with the former Aston Villa man, who would become a marquee signing as they mark their move to a new stadium. Now, an approach has been made over the possibility of a season-long loan switch for Grealish, who is thought to be on around £300,000-a-week at City. Those with knowledge of the season believe a move may not materialise until late in the window, given the belief that a number of clubs who are interested are yet to come forward. Should they manage to do so, persuading Grealish to make the move to Bramley-Moore Dock would be seen as a major play for Everton's new owners, the Friedkin Group. Manager David Moyes is known to be an admirer of the 29-year-old winger, branding him 'probably the best player in the Premier League at this time,' in 2021. Interest is likely to come from both home and abroad. Grealish has been told he can leave and was excluded from City's Club World Cup squad. He is keen to force his way back into the England squad ahead of next year's World Cup. Bayern Munich are known to be admirers, along with Newcastle United, although Toon manager Eddie Howe is not a fan of loans. Grealish arrived at City for a then-British record £100m in 2021, and his contract does not expire until 2027. Grealish did not feature in City's first friendly of pre-season and is highly likely to miss the weekend trip to Palermo ahead of his likely move away. He is thought to have been at the City Football Academy on Saturday as Pep Guardiola fielded two different line ups during a slender 1-0 victory over Preston North End in a behind closed doors match.

Getting shirty, lads! Mason Greenwood has his jersey RIPPED by Tyrone Mings as pair clash in tetchy pre-season showdown between Marseille and Aston Villa

Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood had his shirt ripped by an irate Tyrone Mings as tempers flared in a pre-season friendly between Aston Villa and Marseille on Saturday. Mings appeared unhappy with Greenwood after the latter appeared to aim a kick at Amadou Onana, which brought him to ground. Mings - who was an unused sub away in Iceland in 2020 when Greenwood came off the bench for his only Three Lions cap - subsequently picked up the ball after play had stopped to confront Greenwood. Reacting to the incident on social media, fans expressed their shock at the incident after it occurred. One user wrote: 'Tyrone Mings absolutely manhandling Mason Greenwood.' A second added: 'This is one of the reasons why we love him so much at the Villa.' Mings appeared unhappy with Greenwood after the latter appeared to aim a kick at Amadou Onana, which brought him to ground A third remarked: 'What a man Tyrone Mings.' Further comments read: 'Tyrone Mings is now my favourite player.' 'My respect for Tyrone Mings has gone right up.' That came after the former United man had opened the scoring for Roberto De Zerbi's Marseille - only for John McGinn to equalise for Villa. A brace from former Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sealed the win for went on to clinch victory for the Ligue 1 side. Unai Emery will come up against one of his former clubs in Villarreal in Villa's final warm-up game on Sunday before they host Newcastle United in their Premier League opener next Saturday.
