Amit Malviya, Arnab Goswami booked for false claim about ‘Congress office in Turkey'
The Bengaluru Police on Tuesday filed a first information report against the Bharatiya Janata Party's social media cell chief Amit Malviya and Republic TV's Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami for falsely claiming that the Istanbul Congress Center is an office of the Indian National Congress.
The case was filed based on a complaint by the Indian Youth Congress' legal cell head Shrikant Swaroop BN under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.
The complainant alleged that the claim was made 'with clear and undeniable criminal intent to deceive the Indian public, defame a major political institution, manipulate nationalist sentiments, incite public unrest, and undermine national security and democratic integrity'.
The Indian Youth Congress further noted that the claims were made in the context of tense India-Turkey relations due to Ankara's support for Pakistan during heightened tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad after Operation Sindoor.
The Youth Congress, in a post on X, accused Malviya and Goswami of attempting to defame the constitutional office of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
'Their relentless propaganda, designed to discredit Congress leadership and incite unrest, has crossed every limit of decency and legality,' the Indian Youth Congress said. 'This is a warning to all purveyors of fake news, defaming our leaders and attacking democracy will invite strong legal and political consequences.'

The building shown in the news segment on May 15 is the Istanbul Congress Center, a convention venue owned by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Alt News reported.
Although the Indian National Congress had announced plans in 2019 to open an overseas office in Istanbul and appointed Mohammad Yusuf Khan to lead it, there have been no updates since, and Turkey is not listed on the Indian Overseas Congress website, the fact-checking website added.
Republic TV said on Tuesday that the image was mistakenly used by a video editor on the digital desk due to a 'technical error'.
'The inadvertent error occurred after the live show ended and was carried on the digital platform,' the channel said. 'The moment it was brought to our attention, it was promptly rectified. We sincerely and unconditionally regret the error.'
The Congress, however, said that an apology was not sufficient as redressal for the error.

Berlin [Germany], June 7 (ANI): BJP MP and all-party delegation leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday described the visit to Germany to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism highly successful, noting that Germany has condemned terrorism as well as expressed solidarity with India. Following an interaction at a community event in Berlin, Prasad highlighted the enthusiasm of the Indian diaspora inspired by India's growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and emphasised that the delegation's concerns were heard across six countries, with their mission to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism gaining traction. 'There is a lot of enthusiasm among Indians in Berlin. They are very inspired by India's growth story and the action taken by the country against terrorists under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Our visit to Germany has been very good. Paswan dismissed the claims, stating that the Congress is resorting to excuses in anticipation of defeat in the upcoming elections. 'Now they are looking for excuses because they are going to lose the next election. They know that they are going to lose the Bihar assembly elections... Till now, they were blaming EVMs... Now they have found a new excuse... After independence, you remained in power for 55 years, and today, if the public is rejecting you, then instead of finding excuses, it is time for introspection,' he said. On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Maharashtra assembly election held in November 2024 was 'rigged', and claimed that the same will be repeated in Bihar assembly polls due later this year. In a post on X, Gandhi shared his article published in a newspaper, explaining the 'rigging' in the Maharashtra assembly polls. 'Maharashtra assembly elections in 2024 were a blueprint for rigging democracy. My article shows how this happened, step by step,' Gandhi said on X. The former Congress President explained a five-point process. He said that step one includes rigging the panel that appoints the Election Commission, followed by adding fake voters to the electoral roll. He further claimed that the next steps include inflating the voter turnout, targeting the bogus voting exactly where the BJP needs to win and hiding the evidence.
