After boring below the Chetpet lake and Chetpet suburban railway station, Chennai Metro Rail's tunnel boring machine Thamirabarani will reach the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) station by September this year.
A part of corridor 3 of the 118.9-km phase II project, this stretch begins at Madhavaram, traverses through several key areas of the city, including Chetpet, KMC, Nungambakkam, Mylapore, and Adyar, and ends at Siruseri. The length of corridor 3 is 45.8 km.
The Chetpet and Kilpauk stations will also serve as good examples of multi-modal integration. Commuters who travel via the suburban line from areas like Kodambakkam or Mambalam can get off at Chetpet and switch to the metro. Similarly, at KMC, the phase I and phase II networks meet, allowing commuters to easily change trains and travel to various localities.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the tunnel boring machine must cover a distance of 677 metres to link Chetpet with KMC, and so far, it has drilled nearly 260 metres. 'After it was launched, the machine first bored underneath the suburban station. It took 41 days for it to cross the station. But under the track, the TBM bored for a brief period only, and during this time, the long-distance and high-speed trains had speed restrictions imposed by Southern Railway, and the trains didn't cross 40 kmph as a precautionary measure. The TBM bored at a depth of 18 metres from the ground,' an official said.
To cross the lake, the Thamirabharani TBM had to drill at a depth of nearly 17 metres for 43 days, he added.
Suhasini Fredrick, a resident of Harrington Road for over two decades, said it is quite exciting that in a couple of years, she will be travelling by a train under the lake. 'While one of my siblings lives in Madhavaram, the other resides in Adyar. So, for someone like me, my travel time would be reduced by half to commute to these areas by the Chennai Metro Rail system. Several people travel from Chetpet to the IT corridor and ECR, and they would greatly benefit from the upcoming station at Chetpet,' she added. She said that if long-distance trains stop at Chetpet, then many can alight here and head home.
Sources said the Chetpet-KMC stretch is a short one, but the machine was slowed down as it took some time to build the shaft at the KMC station. This station's work too, like a quite a few stations along this corridor, was delayed because of a tender cancellation a few years ago, as the bidders had placed a steep quote.

We kept waiting without knowing why trains were not coming,' said Rajesh, a commuter who had been stuck at the station for over an hour. The disruption also spilled on to the Green Line, as commuters from airport headed towards Koyambedu, Vadapalani, and Anna Nagar also boarded the blue line trains and disembarked at Alandur. At Chennai Central, one of the network's busiest nodes, frustrated commuters jostled to board overcrowded trains. 'There was a huge rush with people pushing to get in,' said a passenger, describing the scene during the breakdown. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) acknowledged the technical fault and issued an apology, advising passengers to plan for extended travel times.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Saturday successfully completed tunnelling at Tughlakabad Railway Colony station in south Delhi for the upcoming Golden Line, a part of the Phase IV of the metro expansion, said a DMRC official. The tunnel will connect Maa Anandmayee Marg, near Kalkaji Temple, to Tughlakabad station, the last station on the Golden Line. The DMRC official said the last tunnelling breakthrough of 792 metres, achieved using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), took place in the presence of Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar, and other officials. TBMs are designed to bore through various soil and rock layers while minimising disruption to the surface. 'They are especially effective in urban settings and have been extensively used in previous metro phases,' the DMRC official said. According to the official, the breakthrough of a parallel tunnel running across the stretch will be achieved by July this year. Operation target Of the 23.62-km stretch of the Golden Line, 19 km is underground and the remaining 4.5 km is elevated. The metro line, according to the DMRC, is expected to be operational by mid-2026 and will feature four interchange facilities: the Magenta Line at Indira Gandhi International Airport's T-1, the Airport Express Line at Aerocity, the Yellow Line at Chhatarpur, and the Violet Line at Tughlakabad. A total of 15 stations will be located on the Golden Line, comprising 11 underground and four elevated stations. Once the Golden Line becomes operational, south Delhi will be directly connected to the IGI Airport. Work in progress Speaking on the occasion, the Transport Minister said that the breakthrough reaffirms the Centre's commitment to modern and sustainable urban infrastructure that enhances ease of living, reduces road congestion, and contributes to environmental sustainability. 'Ever since our [Bharatiya Janata Party] government came to power in Delhi, we have worked to restore the public's trust, and this is now clearly visible in the progress of long-delayed metro phases. What was once stalled is now moving at full speed,' said Mr. Singh.

: Chennai Metro Rail plans to write to the State government seeking permission to operate vehicles to improve last-mile connectivity at ten major stations in the phase-I and phase-I extension network. Barring a brief period before the pandemic when Chennai Metro Rail ran share cabs and share autorickshaws at several stations, there has never been any sustained effort to operate such shuttle services from the neighbourhood areas.Moreover, mini-buses are being operated only from some stations. Manystations of the 54-km-longphase-I and phase-I extension network are located on arterial roads such as Anna Salai, GST Road and Poonamallee Road. While this is beneficial to office-goers as the Metro Rail network connects many government and private establishments, commuters without vehicles struggle to reach the stations from residential areas. According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they will write to the State Transport Department shortly, requesting permission for operating such last-mile connectivity services. 'We are going to ask them to allow us to operate these last-mile connectivity vehicles or shuttle services under the provisions of State Transport Undertaking of the State government. If they give us the nod, then we can go ahead with floating the bids for the project,' an official said. Ten stations, including Wimco Nagar, Chennai Airport, Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar East, Nanganallur, Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Washermenpet, will have shuttle buses if CMRL gets the approval. At terminal stations such as Chennai Airport and Wimco Nagar, the shuttle buses will cover a 10-km radius. In the remaining stations, they will operate over a 5-km radius. 'We are thinking of operating 8, 10, 15 and 25-seater vehicles based on the demand in each station,' another official said. V.A.R. Srivatson, a resident of Nanganallur who often travels to the High Court and Thousand Lights said, if people took an autorickshaw to the nearest station, it would certainly cost more than the metro fare. 'Additionally, not everyone can walk from their residence to the station as the streets are bereft of well-paved footpaths in several areas. In the interest of train patrons, the CMRL must resume last-mile connectivity system soon,' he said.
