The churning within the BRS
The Congress is facing a financial crunch which is affecting its ability to implement various welfare schemes, particularly the ones it promised before the Assembly elections. Yet it is the BRS that has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons in a section of the media, which the party terms 'anti-BRS' and 'pro-Congress'. Reports state that differences have cropped up within the family of BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao — namely, between his son and working president of the party, K.T. Rama Rao; his nephew, Harish Rao; and his daughter, K. Kavitha.
Since Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao has stopped taking an active role in party affairs, speculation is rife in political circles that the BRS is planning to hand over the reins of the party to Mr. Rama Rao. This has reportedly upset Mr. Harish Rao, a former minister who has been a steadfast supporter of the party and its president for the last 24 years.

Mr. Harish Rao rubbished these rumours at a press conference. He categorically stated that he had no differences with Mr. Rama Rao or any other leader in the BRS for that matter, and that he would always remain a soldier of Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao. 'The decision of the party chief would be of paramount importance to me. I will not hesitate to work with KTR (K.T. Rama Rao) even if he is given the reins of the party,' he said. Mr. Harish Rao also sought to label the whole controversy a 'conspiracy' of the Congress aimed at engineering fissures within the BRS.
Mr. Rama Rao, Mr. Harish Rao, and B. Vinod Kumar, a senior leader considered close to the party leadership, also met at Mr. Harish Rao's house for over four hours to discuss the party affairs threadbare. Sources say the meeting was held on Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao's directions. 'There have been reports of bickering and efforts to break the party ever since the party was formed in 2001...,' Mr. Vinod Kumar said. 'Such efforts and conspiracies gain momentum when the party is out of power. The party leadership is united and working hard to take the failures of the Congress government to the people. We believe that it is better to sweat during peace than to bleed during war.'
Sources admit that there could be minor differences of opinion on the protest programmes being planned against the government. However, they add, rival parties examine such differences with a magnifying glass. They also say that speculation about Mr. Harish Rao breaking away from the party originated long ago, in 2006, when the BRS, which was then known as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, pulled out of the Congress-led coalition government. It again gained momentum after the 2018 Assembly elections when Mr. Harish Rao was not included in Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao's Cabinet. It once again resurfaced after the BRS lost power in December 2023, they say.
Meanwhile, Ms. Kavitha raised eyebrows when she stated recently that certain leaders within the party were conspiring against her rise. She said that they may not be 'satisfied with my spending six months in jail in the case foisted against me in the Delhi liquor policy issue'. Mr. Kavitha, who heads Telangana Jagruthi, a cultural wing of the BRS, was arrested by the CBI in the Delhi liquor policy case on March 15, 2024, and released on bail on August 27. Unlike Mr. Harish Rao, who sought to clear the air, Ms. Kavitha has clearly embarked on her own path. She has been championing the cause of Backward Classes and women. Ever since the party was ousted from power, she has visited about 50 Assembly constituencies to boost the morale of the cadre. She also recently said that while a 'geographical Telangana' State had been created, Samajika Telangana (social justice) has not yet been delivered to the people.
These rumours and public statements have created confusion in the BRS and could affect its ability to regain the support of voters. It is important for the party leadership to dispel them and put up a visible united front against the Congress government. Such efforts will make a huge difference to the morale of the party cadre, especially at a time when the Congress is increasingly dependent on flaying the Opposition instead of delivering on the promises it made to the people of Telangana.

Dharmasthala Bhaktabhimani Vedike takes out protest march in Belagavi, Vijayapura
Members of Sri Dharmasthala Bhaktabhimani Vedike took out protest march in Belagavi and Vijayapura on Wednesday against what they called a systematic conspiracy to defame the holy place in the name of a police investigation. In Belagavi, the protestors gathered at the Rani Channamma Circle and staged a rasta roko for over an hour. They marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum to the State government. They demanded action against portals and YouTubers and social media influencers, who, they said, are creating content to defame Dharmasthala even before the Special Investigation Team completed investigation. They demanded legal action against those passing judgments against the temple town, the Sri Manjunath Swami temple and Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade. A large number of women self-help group members participated in the protest holding placards hailing the charitable activities of the Sri Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. Sri Shivasiddha Someshwar Swami of Mukti Math said that some people are misusing social media to spread misinformation and prejudiced opinion about the holy place. He demanded capital punishment for such people. Sri Shambhulinga Shivacharya Swami of Hiremunavalli, Siddalinga Shivacharya of Sutagatti, vedike leaders G.R. Soner, Jayaram Shetty, Prabhakar Shetty, Santosh Shetty, Krishna Bhat and others were present. They said that some people are targeting Dharmasthala only to gain fame, while others are doing it with an ulterior motive of getting the Dharmadhikari replaced. The former BJP MLC Arun Shahapur addressed the gathering. He demanded action against portals, influencers and some political leaders working against Dharmasthala. He suspected that some anti-Hindu forces have ganged up against Dharmasthala to defame Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade and his family members. He suspected that anti-Hindu forces from other States are involved in the attempt to defame Dharmasthala.

LDF and UDF ratchet up their demand for Suresh Gopi to clarify voter list fraud accusations
As accusations of voter list fraud in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections appeared to turn from a trickle into a torrent, the ruling front and the opposition in Kerala ratcheted up their demand for a public accounting from Union Minister of State for Tourism, Suresh Gopi, MP. Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] general secretary, M.A. Baby, dismissed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) former State president K. Surendran's averment that Mr. Gopi owed no explanation and the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) were grousing belatedly about Election Commission of India (ECI) officials in Thrissur stacking the odds in favour of the Union Minister. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Mr. Baby said: 'Belated reporting of a theft did not absolve the perpetrator of the crime. The BJP's voter fraud in Thrissur is a microcosm of what the BJP-engineered in other States. The modus operandi, including identity theft, reflects a pattern. The Election Commission of India (ECI) should retrieve its lost credibility by conducting a thorough investigation', he said. Meanwhile, Mr. Gopi, who arrived after a long hiatus in Thrissur early Wednesday, appeared to maintain a sphinx-like silence. When mobbed by reporters, Mr. Gopi quipped: 'Thank you for the favours done'. Congress speak Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said Mr. Gopi's reticence was a deliberate attempt to cock a snook at the Thrissur electorate and civil society. 'Mr. Gopi has the right of reply, given the gravity of the accusations of voter fraud swirling around him and the BJP in Kerala. His speechlessness lends credibility to Congress's accusations of massive voter list fraud in Thrissur each passing hour,' Mr. Satheesan said. Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala adduced evidence of what he claimed was massive voter list fraud by CPI(M) and BJP since 2021. He said the BJP appeared to have taken a page from the CPI(M) 's playbook on rigging elections. 'It included persons appearing in multiple voters' lists across districts and fictitious voters using phoney addresses and identity proof', he added.

Forget Canada! D.C. mayor taunts Trump, says US capital should be America's 51st state instead
Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser criticized President Trump's decision to assume control of the city's police and deploy the National Guard, calling it political theater. Highlighting falling crime rates, used the occasion to push for D.C. statehood, arguing that only full autonomy can protect residents' rights. The federal oversight can last 30 days unless extended by Congress. Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Federal takeover amid declining crime rates Bowser calls it a Political Theater Partisan divide deepens Tired of too many ads? Remove Ads Guard's limited role Statehood debate reignited What's next? FAQs: Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has fiercely delivered a sharp rebuke to President Trump's unprecedented decision to take control of the city's police department and deploy National Guard troops, calling it a direct threat to the city's democratic autonomy. Seizing the moment to amplify her long-standing campaign for the District to become the 51st state. Bowser mentioned that only full independence can protect the rights of more than 700,000 August 11, 2025, Trump invoked Section 740 of the Home Rule Act , giving him authority to assume command of the Metropolitan Police Department and authorize the deployment of 800 National Guard members under Title 32 status. At present, between 100 and 200 guardsmen remain active, managing support functions such as traffic management and crowd control. They have no arrest powers. As per the law, the federal control is restricted to 30 days unless Congress votes to extend justified the action by warning of the rise of violence in the city, but crime data presents a different angle. Washington, D.C., recorded a 35% drop in violent crime in 2024, and homicides have fallen by 26% in 2025. City officials credit targeted policing strategies and community programs for these declines, calling the president's move unnecessary and politically the takeover 'unsettling and unprecedented,' Bowser emphasized the intervention had little to do with public safety and more to do with political theater. She stressed that the city does not need federal oversight, but equal representation and control over its own governance. In a pointed jab, she quipped that the president 'doesn't have to look north to Canada for a fight — he's found one right here in the capital.'The move has deepened partisan rifts. Democrats say the federal intervention is proof of why D.C. should become the 51st state, noting residents pay federal taxes and serve in the military yet have no voting representation in Congress. Republicans, however, support Trump's decision, mentioning recent high-profile crimes and accusing local leaders of being soft on enforcement. Congress has scheduled hearings to examine the city's safety record and their visible presence of National Guard members across the city, their role is largely supportive. They are coordinating with logistics and crowd control but leaving law enforcement to the Metropolitan Police Department. Even during local coordination, the guardsmen have to finally answer the federal authority for the duration of the high-profile clash has reignited the debate for D.C. statehood . Past proposals, like the Washington, D.C. Admission Act has cleared the House but failed in the Senate. Advocates say statehood would end the capital's vulnerability to sudden federal control , while critics caution it could shift the political balance in Federal control will end in early September unless extended. Legal experts are already weighing whether Trump's actions could face constitutional challenges over executive authority in a jurisdiction that is not a state. Bowser says her administration will continue ensuring safety while protecting the city's autonomy. 'Our residents deserve the same rights as everyone else,' she stated, insisting that true security will come not from federal oversight, but in full statehood for the District of Columbia.Q1.
