Chloe Kelly's next goal? Breaking Chelsea's WSL stranglehold

Featuring glory, acrimony, adulation and transformation, it's been quite the year for Chloe Kelly. Up next? A fresh chapter at Arsenal. Kelly signed for Arsenal permanently in early July, almost immediately after her successful six-month loan spell there ended. This switch became a footnote in the ensuing weeks, with Kelly powering England to Euro 2025 glory as the most impactful of substitutes. Be it creating two match-saving goals in the quarter-final, scoring the winner in the semi-final, or converting the last penalty of the shoot-out in the final, Kelly repeatedly delivered during England's thrilling run. Having also scored the winner in the Euro 2022 final, she has earned legendary status in English sport. It is easy to forget, then, that her year had been pretty remarkable even before the Euros. Kelly left Manchester City in hostile fashion last January — she accused the club of trying to 'assassinate my character' after she fell out of favour — and joined Arsenal on loan in a desperate attempt to salvage her Euros squad place.

Leah Williamson to miss start of Arsenal's WSL season due to knee injury

Arsenal have been dealt a blow before the start of the new Women's Super League season after captain Leah Williamson was ruled out for several weeks following a procedure on a knee injury sustained in last month's Euro 2025 final. It is understood that the 28-year-old reported back to Arsenal with swelling on her right knee having led her country to a second successive European Championship triumph in Switzerland. After the swelling had come down, tests revealed surgery was required to clear out the joint. Williamson was seen on crutches at Arsenal's London Colney training ground on Thursday and is expected to be out for some time. The club had feared the defender could be out for months – thankfully for them that has not proved to be the case. The surgery was on the same knee in which Williamson ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in April 2023, leading to her missing the last World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and being out of action for nine months, though the two injuries are not directly linked. Arsenal open their WSL season against London City Lionesses at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday 6 September.

Birmingham City launch ambitious bid to sign former Barcelona star - as Tom Brady-owned club eyes defensive reinforcements after strong start to the Championship season

Birmingham City have launched an ambitious bid to sign former Barcelona defender Mikayil Faye from French club Rennes. The Senegal international was sold by Barcelona last year to help alleviate their financial crisis and allow them to register signings such as Spain international Dani Olmo. Faye can play at centre back and left-back and is a powerful, athletic player who is capable of adding a goal also. The 21-year old was the subject of interest from a number of top European sides before joining Rennes but has only made 11 appearances and has seemingly struggled to settle. Birmingham could face a battle to convince him to come to The Championship but will hope their project and the presence of personalities such as Tom Brady can help to sway him. Premier League sides are also assessing the youngster as the transfer window draws to a close. Birmingham have won one and drawn one on their start to the season and face Oxford United at the weekend. The Blues have already welcomed a wealth of new additions this summer with the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Marvin Ducksch and Taylor Gardner-Hickman arriving for fees of £7.7million, £1.7m and £1.5m respectively. Despite splashing the cash on new recruits, Birmingham have also made the most of out-of-contract players this transfer window, signing ex-Premier League star Demarai Gray, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Kanya Fujimonto and Phil Neumann all as free agents. Brighton duo Eiran Cashin and James Beadle, as well as Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle, have also joined the St Andrews' club on loan.
