Ghaziabad Man Gets Insurance For Stolen Car After 22 Years. What To Do And Mistakes To Avoid
Car thefts are on the rise across the country, affecting both small towns and major metro cities. While vigilance remains important, understanding the insurance claim process has become equally essential in such cases. Recently, a resident of Ghaziabad experienced this firsthand. Although his car was insured and he believed it was secure, the insurance company failed to meet expectations when it was time to file a claim.
In a significant ruling that underscores consumer rights, Puneet Agarwal of Ghaziabad has finally received his insurance claim for a stolen car 22 years after the incident. The car theft occurred during his Haridwar Yatra in 2003, but the insurance company initially refused to pay out. Agarwal took the matter to the District Consumer Commission, which ordered the company to pay 75% of the claim amount and Rs 5,000 as compensation.
Agarwal's car was insured, and upon theft, he promptly lodged an FIR and informed National Insurance Company Limited along with ICICI Bank, his loan provider. However, despite following the correct procedures, the insurance claim was not processed, forcing Agarwal to approach the consumer forum. After a prolonged battle, the Commission ruled in his favour, awarding him Rs 1,43,689 and Rs 5,000 as compensation.
To expedite the insurance claim process in case of car theft, one should follow these steps:
By adhering to these steps, car owners can streamline the insurance claim process and avoid unnecessary delays.

FASTag Annual Pass Debuts With 1.4 Lakh Sales, 1.39 Lakh Transactions On Day 1
The pass, available at over 1,150 toll plazas nationwide, allows non-commercial vehicle owners unlimited travel for one year or up to 200 trips with a one-time payment of Rs 3,000 On its launch day, the FASTag annual pass recorded 1.4 lakh activations and 1.39 lakh toll transactions, according to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The pass, available at over 1,150 toll plazas nationwide, allows non-commercial vehicle owners unlimited travel for one year or up to 200 trips with a one-time payment of Rs 3,000. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said it has 'successfully implemented" the FASTag annual pass facility on national highways and expressways nationwide. Around 20,000-25,000 concurrent users are using the Rajmargyatra app at any given time, and annual pass users receive SMS messages for zero toll fee deduction. 'The Annual Pass has received an overwhelming response from the National Highway users. Till 7 pm on the first day of implementation, around 1.4 lakh users purchased and activated the annual pass and around 1.39 lakh transactions were recorded on toll plaza," it said. NHAI officials and nodal officers have been appointed at each toll plaza to ensure a smooth travel experience for the pass users, apart from addressing queries of the pass users through various channels. Also, to address the grievances of pass users, 1033 National Highway Helpline has been further strengthened with the addition of over 100 executives, the government said. Providing a seamless and economical travel option to the national highway users, the annual pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through a one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000. The annual pass is applicable for all non-commercial vehicles with a valid FASTag and gets activated within two hours of the one-time fee payment through the Rajmargyatra app or NHAI website. With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over eight crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the electronic toll collection system in the country. The introduction of the annual pass facility will not only enhance the FASTag user experience but also make journeys on the national highways and expressways more economical and seamless. The annual pass can be attached to the user's existing FASTag card. Once the pass expires, either after one year or 200 trips, it can be easily recharged. The official said the pass would benefit frequent city-to-city travellers and those who drive regularly to their hometowns. 'You won't need to top up FASTag every week or month anymore," they added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vizag LPG blast: Kin get 24L as advocacy group steps in
1 2 Visakhapatnam: A compensation of Rs 24 lakh was provided two weeks ago to the family of four individuals who lost their lives in an LPG domestic cylinder blast at Vambay colony near PM Palem, Visakhapatnam, in Aug 2023. The payout was made possible only after the intervention of a third party, as the victims' family members were unaware of their entitlement to such compensation. The tragedy left the family in distress due to delayed response and lack of immediate assistance from the local gas distributor. A similar situation occurred in Kurnool, where the family of victims of a gas cylinder blast faced challenges in securing compensation. In June 2023, the district consumer disputes redressal commission ordered a compensation of Rs 30 lakh to be paid to the family of the five deceased in Kurnool. In another incident in Anantapur in 2022, the same third-party intervention was once again necessary to facilitate compensation following a cylinder explosion. Likewise, in a gas fire incident that took place in the Poorna Market area of Visakhapatnam a few years ago, it took efforts to educate the victims' family about their entitlements under the insurance policy before they could successfully claim the compensation. A general lack of awareness among consumers, combined with the reluctance or failure of some distributors to report such incidents to gas companies, continues to hamper both the compensation process and access to timely medical treatment in cylinder-related accidents. Korikana Sujatha, vice-president of Vistarana Info Society, who facilitated the insurance relief for the several families of the victims, explained that despite the existence of accident insurance policies under oil marketing companies (OMCs), communication gaps between distributors, gas companies, and insurance providers often leave families without timely support. "Through efforts and communication with authorities, we ensured that insurance claims were processed in the recent LPG accident case in Vambay Colony as was done in the past. The policy taken by OMCs provides Rs 6 lakh in case of death per person and Rs 2 lakh towards medical expenditure. But what plagues the process is the ignorance of some dealers and the lack of awareness among many consumers. Once a distributor learns of such an incident, they must escalate it to the sales officer of the respective OMC. Victims are also eligible for Rs 25,000 as immediate medical aid," she said. Family member Karri Kishore expressed how the family had been left in the dark about the insurance policy. "Their drafting and communication helped us in getting the insurance," he said. Meanwhile, Vistarana Info Society was formally honoured by the Vizag district administration for its contributions to public welfare, legal advocacy, and structured communication.
