187,652 Malaysians cleared of bankruptcy since 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 187,652 individuals with debts not exceeding RM200,000 were cleared of bankruptcy between March 2023 and June this year, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran said this figure included those aged 40 and below. "This achievement is clear proof of the Madani government's commitment to implementing reforms that have a direct impact on the people," he said during the question and answer session in the Dewan Rakyat. Kulasegaran was responding to Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang), who had asked for the total number of young people aged below 40 who had been freed from bankruptcy, with debts not exceeding RM200,000, He said, through a strategic and inclusive approach under the Madani agenda, people were not cleared of the burden of debt, but also had their dignity restored and were given fresh hope to rebuild their lives. "The government has high hopes that this second chance will provide them with a renewed lease of life and enable them to carry on with their daily lives, in line with the Malaysia Madani agenda, which emphasises the concept of compassion (ihsan) for all through acts of human empowerment," he said.

Proposal to separate AG-public prosecutor roles to be presented to Cabinet in August
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that a proposal to separate the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and the public prosecutor will be tabled before the Cabinet at the end of this month. "The distinction between these roles has been a long-standing request. Now we are seeing encouraging progress," Anwar said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 14). He said this in response to Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu), who had asked which outdated laws were being reviewed or abolished in line with the government's reform agenda and the timeline for their implementation. Anwar said that there had been 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments - one involving citizenship and the newly passed Parliament Services Act 2025. Among the reforms cited were amendments to the Evidence of Child Witness Act, the enactment of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, the Abolition of Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, the Ombudsman Bill 2025 and the Cyber Crime Bill 2025. The Prime Minister said that five new acts were introduced and 34 acts amended in 2023; another five new acts were enacted and 57 acts amended in 2024; and four new acts have been passed, with six acts amended, along with two new bills and 11 other bills amended so far this year. On the subject of anti-party-hopping laws, Anwar said he had no objection to enhancing or updating the current legislation. – Bernama

'No bid for immunity, only legal clarification,' says PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed claims that he is seeking legal immunity to avoid facing court proceedings, whether civil or criminal. During Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar (PH-Tambun) clarified that he was not seeking immunity from lawsuits, but was merely referring a legal question to the Federal Court for a ruling. The prime minister said he was only seeking a court decision on whether claims without reasonable grounds (frivolous), actions intended to harass the opposing party without a genuine intent to seek justice (vexatious), and abuse of the court process are applicable in all cases, including civil matters. "What I am seeking is to ask the court for a decision on whether anyone can make frivolous and vexatious attacks against the prime minister that disrupt the course of our work. "It is up to the court to make the decision, not the prime minister," he said. Anwar said this in response to a supplementary question from Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah), who sought clarification regarding allegations that he had applied for legal immunity in order to face cases, whether civil or criminal, in court. In June, the High Court dismissed Anwar's application to refer eight constitutional questions to the Federal Court regarding the legal provisions on the immunity of a sitting prime minister. Judge Roz Mawar Rozain rejected the application, ruling that it did not meet the requirements under Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act (CJA). She also said the questions posed were speculative, not necessary for the disposal of the case, and did not concern the interpretation or validity of any constitutional provision.
