Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk has met with Minister of Parliamentary, Legal, and Political Communication Affairs Mahmoud Fawzi to discuss proposed amendments to the Agricultural Cooperatives Law. The meeting was part of the government's ongoing efforts to support and develop the agricultural sector, enhance food security, and empower cooperatives as a cornerstone of sustainable development.
The two ministers reviewed key provisions in the draft law, which aims to update the legislative framework governing cooperatives to better address current challenges. The proposed legislation is expected to boost farmers' productivity and strengthen the role of agricultural associations in delivering tangible services on the ground.
The discussions also focused on ways to enhance the role of cooperatives within the national economy and address longstanding obstacles in the sector. Farouk emphasized the crucial role that cooperatives play in supporting smallholder farmers and in integrating production and marketing chains. He highlighted the urgency of finalizing the law to align with farmers' aspirations and the importance of revitalizing agricultural associations as a key resource for farmers, providing inputs, advisory services, and financing for small- and medium-sized projects.
For his part, Fawzi underscored his ministry's commitment to collaborating closely with the Ministry of Agriculture to develop a consensus-based law that addresses the needs of all stakeholders and revitalizes Egypt's agricultural sector. He described the bill as essential for regulating and modernizing the sector in line with the country's national development goals. Further joint meetings between the two ministries are scheduled to finalize the proposed amendments, with the draft set to be reviewed by the Cabinet before being submitted to Parliament.

Egypt exports first high-tech potato seeds to Uzbekistan after opening market

Egypt has exported its first shipment of locally produced, high-technology 'mini tuber' potato seeds to Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced on Wednesday , following recent efforts to open the Uzbek market. The head of the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine, Mohamed El-Mensy, said the shipment was part of a directive from Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk to enhance Egypt's seed production capabilities and establish the country as a seed exporter. El-Mensy added that a plant health unit had been assigned to prepare the technical file for the exported seeds. He noted that a video conference was held between Egyptian and Uzbek officials, attended by the Uzbek ambassador in Cairo, and was followed by round-the-clock communication to finalise the file in time for Uzbekistan's planting season. He said that procedures were currently underway to export the remaining shipments. The move follows a visit to Egypt in late May by a high-level Uzbek delegation to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation in the agricultural sector. At the time, Minister Farouk had instructed various departments to facilitate cooperation, including organising intensive field visits for the delegation to agricultural projects, research centres, and farms to share expertise.

Egyptian agricultural exports reach 6.24 million tonnes, expanding to new global markets

Alaa Farouk, Egypt's Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, announced that the country's agricultural exports have surpassed 6.24 million tonnes as of mid-month, marking an increase of 575,000 tonnes compared to the same period last year. According to a report from Ahmed Ezzam, Head of the Agricultural Services and Follow-up Sector, and based on data from the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine Authority, citrus fruits lead the way in exports, with more than 1.9 million tonnes shipped overseas. Potatoes followed closely with over 1.3 million tonnes, while fresh onions contributed 231,894 tonnes. Grapes ranked fourth with 159,477 tonnes, followed by sweet potatoes at 123,857 tonnes. The export portfolio also includes a wide range of products, such as beans, mangoes, garlic, guavas, and other notable Egyptian crops. In related news, Minister Farouk revealed that Egypt has opened eight new international markets for key agricultural exports, including grapes, pomegranates, mangoes, potatoes, and seed potatoes. New markets include South Africa, Costa Rica, Uzbekistan, India, and the Philippines. This expansion underscores Egypt's growing presence in global agricultural trade. Farouk credited the country's agricultural export successes to the collaborative efforts of farmers, producers, exporters, and agricultural engineers, who work diligently to produce high-quality crops and adhere to best agricultural practices. He also acknowledged the critical role played by agricultural researchers, the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine Authority, and other regulatory bodies, which ensure the smooth flow of exports from farms to international markets. The surge in agricultural exports is attributed to Egypt's commitment to international standards, which help maintain the quality and reputation of its agricultural products. These standards also streamline the export process and mitigate any challenges that may arise in foreign markets. Additionally, Egypt's ongoing efforts to open new markets, tighten regulatory oversight, and enhance the Agricultural Quarantine Authority's coding system further bolster the country's competitive position in global trade. As part of these efforts, the Ministry of Agriculture recently hosted a delegation from Kuwait's Public Authority for Food and Nutrition to showcase Egypt's export system and share best practices for agricultural trade.
