Traders At Chandni Chowk Protest Wall Of Indifference

Despite efforts to secure redevelopment funding for this historical marketplace, the substantial investments proved ineffective due to oversight and poor maintenance by authorities, claimed traders. This situation persists despite multiple Supreme Court and Delhi High Court rulings aimed at restoring Chandni Chowk's former grandeur through systemtic improvements.
The traders' association announced that they would continue their hour-long daily protests until Aug 14, criticising authorities and highlighting court orders.
"Our objective is to combat corruption and establish proper public order. Delhi Police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are wishfully and wilfully not implementing several SC and HC's strict orders. The protests intend to 'name and shame' the administration for its failure to implement the rule of law in the area and for making a mockery of the court's directions," said Sanjay Bhargava, president of Chandni Chowk Vyapaar Mandal.
Traders referenced various judicial orders, including the HC directive from Nov 7, 2023, instructing agencies to maintain the area's redevelopment and beautification works. They also highlighted the HC's direction from Dec 20, 2023, mandating strict compliance with the Special Task Force's Dec 7, 2023 decisions concerning street vendor management. The last HC order from Nov 22, 2024, required MCD and Delhi Police to address deficiencies and illegal activities within two weeks.

"The judiciary asked for submission of a status report within a fortnight. But except for Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation, no other agency has submitted the status report so far. This is because they have done nothing," said Bhargava.
"The 1.3 km-stretch developed after spending Rs 140 crore is poorly maintained. It lacks basic sanitation, so the question of deep cleaning of stone work done in the market area doesn't arise," added Deepak Jain, secretary of the traders' association.
Traders pointed out the Supreme Court's 2007 ruling designated the area as a no hawking, no squatting zone and ordered the removal of illegal occupants. "MCD, which is responsible for sanitation, toilets, controlling loading and unloading in restricted hours, prevention of unauthorised construction on the main road, have totally ignored the directions of the courts. Similarly, Delhi Police and Delhi Traffic Police have ignored removing illegal hawkers or squatters," said Ajay Mittal, a trader and association member.
In response, Delhi Police and MCD told TOI, action is being taken on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, Praveen Shankar Kapoor, general secretary of the Chandni Chowk Nagrik Manch and spokesperson of Delhi BJP, said while there are problems that need to be addressed, the traders will not hold protests during the Independence Day Week. "From Aug 9 to 15, we will not take part in any protests or sit-ins," he said.

Congress councillor named in ‘love jihad' finance case should surrender: Party colleague
The Leader of Opposition, who is a Congress politician, came out in support of Qadri and alleged the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has implicated him in the 'love jihad' case to divert people's attention from basic issues. A reward of Rs 20,000 has been announced by police for providing information leading to the arrest of the councillor, who is absconding for nearly two months. Indore, Aug 6 (PTI) Absconding city Congress councillor Anwar Qadri, accused of funding 'love jihad', should surrender before police, his party colleague and Leader of Opposition in the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) Chintu Choukse said on Wednesday. Talking to reporters, he said, 'The BJP government is presenting Qadri as the biggest criminal of the state, but in municipal corporation conferences, he always spoke in support of cows and temples.' Chouksey claimed Qadri was implicated in the alleged 'love jihad' funding case at the BJP's behest in the same manner as false charges were being framed against opposition politicians across the country by misusing law enforcement agencies to divert people's attention from key issues. Asked why Qadri has been running away from the law, the Leader of Opposition replied, 'Of course this is a mistake. He should surrender.' Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said on Tuesday a proposal will be presented in the upcoming meeting of the civic body to cancel Qadri's membership because his continuation as a councillor is not in the interest of the city given the serious allegations against him, including the 'love jihad' case. The term 'love jihad' is used by right-wing organisations to claim that Muslim men lure women of other religions into love traps to convert them to Islam. A police official said two young men from the city — Sahil Sheikh and Altaf Shah — had allegedly admitted during interrogation in June that Qadri had given them Rs 3 lakh to convert girls. The duo was arrested in separate cases on charges of raping two women and other offences. On the basis of statements given by the two men, a case was registered against Qadri for being involved in a conspiracy to convert girls/women through financial allurement. Since then, the Congress councillor is absconding. The official said after Qadri absconded, the district administration issued an order to arrest him under the National Security Act (NSA). He said 18 criminal cases have been registered against the Congress councillor in different police stations in the city. PTI HWP MAS RSY This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
