University College may discontinue some humanities electives
Mangaluru: The century-old University College, Hampankatta, is considering to discontinue some of its humanities course electives after witnessing a dip in admissions. This has raised concerns among the student fraternity as well as senior teaching faculty.

According to sources from the college, fewer than 15 students enrolled in travel and tourism, Hindi, English, and journalism subjects so far. Due to the mounting financial burden, the college, which is directly under the control of Mangalore University (MU), is now planning to stop those courses.
One of the faculty members in the humanities department said that the college, without any approval from the syndicate body of MU, decided not to give applications for the BA tourism and travel management course.
The course remains closed for the next academic year. Similarly, it is the same with Hindi and journalism subjects. The college also stopped issuing applications for English literature; however, the same was resumed after some retired professors started questioning the rationale behind it.
A source added that the college principal and officials at Mangalore University argue that to run a course, it needs a minimum of 30 students in each course combination.
However, as per the department of collegiate education, the requirement is 15 students, and the same applies to all colleges, including University College.
Another guest faculty member questioned that last year all these courses, which the college is planning to close down, received good admissions with more than 15 students. "When we questioned the reason behind the closure of tourism and travel management course to vice-chancellor PL Dharma, he answered that the same has been offered in the BBA course.

However, both courses are not the same," said the guest faculty, adding that MU already closed down some of the postgraduate courses, and the same should not be done to UG courses.
"With closure, guest faculty will lose their jobs as well," said a guest faculty member.
Ganapathi Gowda S, principal of the college, denied the closure of any electives in the BA course at the moment. "The admissions are ongoing and applications have been received. To date, we have not taken any official decision to discontinue any electives," said Gowda.

As part of this growth plan, the Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to become operational soon. It will initially handle 20 million passengers, with capacity set to increase to 90 million annually in later phases. Govt. to implement school fee regulation via ordinance: Sood
The Delhi government will provide immediate relief to parents by bringing in an ordinance to regulate arbitrary school fee hikes, Education Minister Ashish Sood announced on Wednesday, asserting that the interim measure will later be formalisedthrough legislation in the Assembly within six months. The move comes amid growing concern among students and their parents over unauthorised fee hikes and alleged mistreatment of students by private schools. Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Sood said, 'In the absence of a Delhi Assembly session, we will bring in an ordinance to implement the proposed measures so that parents get relief this academic year. The issue will be revisited in the Vidhan Sabha after six months.' Mr. Sood accused the previous government of neglecting the issue and 'working in tandem with schools' rather than protecting parents' interests. His comments come in the wake of a controversy involving Delhi Public School, Dwarka, which reportedly struck students off the rolls for non-payment. Following a directive from the Directorate of Education (DoE), the school reinstated the students. 'Students have been reinstated. Right now, the holidays are on, and they will return to classrooms afterwards,' Mr. Sood said. However, several parents claim their children are still being excluded from class WhatsApp groups and essential academic updates despite the official order. Smart learning Mr. Sood said that 75 CM Shri Schools equipped with smart classrooms, AI-based learning tools, AR/VR labs, and courses in robotics and data science will be established. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Language Labs will also be set up in 100 schools to offer foreign language instruction in English, French, and German. Mr. Sood said financial aid has been released to all State universities and 12 Delhi University colleges, with ₹275 crore sanctioned as the first instalment for staff salaries and operational expenses. Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Atishi said parents of private schools told her on Wednesday that the government was 'bringing a law through the back door, which is to save private schools'. 'I assured them we will continue to fight with them against this education mafia too,' she posted on X.
