TAWAU: Police arrested a 31-year-old man here in connection with an extortion case involving threats to leak private images of a school canteen worker in Selangor two years ago. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect, who resides in Taman Sri Balung, was identified as a person of interest in the investigation lodged in Gombak in 2023.
Advertisement 'The suspect allegedly blackmailed the 29-year-old male victim on 7 Nov 7, 2023, using the Telegram messaging app to send the victim's intimate images along with threats,' he said, Monday. The victim claimed the suspect demanded RM500 to keep the images from being released. After complying, he was asked again for another RM500, which he also paid. However, the suspect later escalated the demand to RM2,000. When the victim refused, the suspect allegedly threatened to distribute the images publicly. Fearing further threats, the victim lodged a police report at the Gombak station. The suspect was finally apprehended by a police team last Saturday and is being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion. UiTM Dungun fatal crash: Court grants bail to woman charged with students' murder
KUALA TERENGGANU: The High Court here has granted bail of RM40,000 with two sureties to a woman charged with murdering three Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dungun students in a road crash on Oct 9. In delivering his decision Tuesday (June 17), Justice Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani found the defence argument that the collision was unintentional and that the accused, Norizan Ismail, 50, had skidded into a drain, to be reasonable. Perhaps the same can be said of Norizan," he said. The court also imposed additional conditions: that the accused must report to the Dungun police station once every two months; that she be prohibited from operating any vehicle, including cars, motorcycles, or bicycles; and her husband or bailor must ensure she has no access to any vehicle keys. The accused also may only leave her home when accompanied by her husband and must continue receiving hospital treatment. Additionally, she is prohibited from contacting or interfering with any witnesses until the trial concludes. If the accused breaches any of the conditions, the bail will be automatically revoked and the bail sum forfeited. In response to a query from the judge, defence counsel Mohd Shahir Mat Jusoh informed the court that Norizan had a scheduled hospital appointment in Kuala Lumpur and was also undergoing alternative treatment. On Oct 15, Norizan was charged with three counts of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code in connection with the deaths of UiTM Dungun students Muhammad Akmal Md Tukirim, 25; Ku Adib Aizad Ku Azmi, 20; and Khairil Anuar Jamaluddin, 20. Subsequently, the court ordered Norizan to be sent to Hospital Permai for psychiatric evaluation, which found her fit to stand trial. Norizan is also facing a charge under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code at the Kuala Terengganu Sessions Court for attempted murder involving another UiTM student who was injured in the same crash. – Bernama

Former Melaka govt dept director claims trial to bribery, false claims charges
MELAKA: A 51-year-old former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department has claimed trial to five charges of receiving bribes and submitting false claims amounting to RM126,100. Khairol Adri Rosli entered a plea of not guilty after all the charges were read out to him before Sessions judge Elesabet Paya Wan in Ayer Keroh on Tuesday (June 17). On the first charge, the accused is alleged to have submitted false particulars of upgrading works for the tennis and petanque courts at the Melaka State Youth and Sports Complex, amounting to RM126,100. The offence was allegedly committed at the Youth and Sports Department office on Dec 8, 2023. The charge was framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(2), which provides for up to 20 years' jail and a fine no less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. For the second to fifth charges, he is alleged to have received RM8,000 from one Shaari So'od, 63, who had a vested interest in the upgrading works of the tennis and petanque courts at the complex. The offences were allegedly committed at four different locations around the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) and Bukit Baru here between Sept 25, 2023 and June 25 last year. For these offences, Khairol was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison, or a fine, or both if found guilty. DPP Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari proposed bail of RM25,000 for all the charges with additional conditions. Lawyer T. Gajendran, representing the accused, appealed for a lower amount as his client has to support his family. The court set bail at RM20,000 for all charges and fixed Aug 15 for next mention.
