Eagles rookie's impressive debut overshadowed by moment that ‘he is going to be sick about'
Linebacker Nakobe Dean and offensive tackle Jordan Mailata were among those who gave Campbell a hard time afterward. Everybody was in disbelief.
A pass from Bengals backup quarterback Jake Browning slipped out of wide receiver Isaiah Williams' hands and dangled in the air as Campbell dove for it. He got both hands on the ball, but it fell out after his back came off the ground. He slammed one fist into the turf and grabbed his face mask out of frustration.
'Oh, man. Jihaad Campbell is going to be sick about that,' Eagles color commentator Ross Tucker said on the television broadcast.
After the game, Campbell admitted that he was 'still upset' about not picking off Browning.
The Eagles' pick of Campbell with the 31st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft was considered a steal. A shoulder injury caused the former Alabama star to slide further than expected.
Campbell has looked the part during practices and flashed great potential against the Bengals. His numbers (three assisted tackles) were not dazzling — an interception would have made things better. But his speed and physicality stood out. He was around the ball on a ton of plays, showing he could be a great playmaker for Philadelphia's defense.
'Shoulda, coulda, woulda, but I didn't,' Campbell said about dropping the interception. 'There's things to learn from. Got to catch it and turn my body so I can land on my back. So it's different pointers in that, you know, that I got to understand and just be a pro more so. Just keep on continuing to get better. That's all I can do.'
Rookie defensive tackle Ty Robinson said he 'ripped' Campbell 'a little bit' for missing the pick and laughed about it. He's confident Campbell will get it next time.
'It was great, but I'm an overachiever, and I want to get back to the tape to watch the thing that I can self-assess on and get better,' Campbell said.
Campbell, a native of Erial, which is about a 20-minute drive to Lincoln Financial Field, had family in attendance, making the moment even more special.
During Philadelphia's pre-game warmups, he visualized making plays and seeing the fans during the game. The 21-year-old reminded himself to not 'get big-headed' and to not be afraid of making mistakes.
Overthinking his assignments would only lead to more errors.
'It's a day-by-day, step-by-step process,' he said about defensive coordinator Vic Fangio putting a lot on his plate. 'It's a big mountain that I got to climb. I'm willing to climb it every day, you know what I'm saying? For myself and for the whole team.'
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said Campbell is 'doing a good job' and continues to get better every day, and Campbell's teammates agree. Soon, Campbell could develop into a dynamic playmaker for one of the NFL's best defenses.
'Jihaad is a violent dude out there on the field,' Robinson said. 'He's quick, too. Watching him on film, he's just flying around. He's not afraid to hit. I can tell you that. It's funny to watch him. We're out there in practice, and he might hit one of the starters or the ones on offense. I'm like, 'Ouu, man, maybe you shouldn't do that.' But it's just part of the game. When you're out there, you just want to do your part, you want to go make a play, and sometimes it happens. Those guys don't get too upset. They understand as well.'

Sevilla & Elche reach transfer agreement
La Liga newcomers Elche have reached an agreement over the signing of a member of the attacking ranks at Sevilla. That's according to El Chiringuito TV, who point towards Rafa Mir as the player set to be on the move. Frontman Mir for his par spent last season plying his trade on loan away from Sevilla, with Valencia. The 28-year-old went on to endure something of an underwhelming stint at Mestalla, notching just two goals in 22 appearances across all competitions. As alluded to above, though, such numbers, evidently, did not prove enough to discourage those behind the scenes at Elche. This comes amid confirmation on the part of the aforementioned El Chiringuito TV that the framework of a deal for Mir has been put in place between the respective boards at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero, and Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. 'Preliminary agreement between Sevilla and Elche for Rafa Mir. He could debut tomorrow against Betis.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Chelsea draw blank in Crystal Palace stalemate
Chelsea suffered a Club World Cup hangover as they were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace to open their Premier League campaign on Sunday. Palace were denied an early opener when Eberechi Eze's free-kick was ruled out by a VAR review for Marc Guehi obstructing the Chelsea wall. New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to snatching a winner for the home side, but the newly-crowned world champions were blunt in attack against a well-organised Palace defence. The Eagles key duo of Guehi and Eze started despite mounting speculation the England internationals are set to join Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively. "As long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good," said Palace boss Oliver Glasner. "They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that's what I expected." Eze thought he had opened the scoring with a blistering free-kick that had too much power for Robert Sanchez. The goal was disallowed for Guehi's role in creating a gap by man-handling Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall. Chelsea's demolition of European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final last month had raised the Blues' hopes they can challenge for a first Premier League title since 2017. But Enzo Maresca bemoaned his side's lack of preparation time since beating PSG in New York just 35 days ago. "They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best," said the Italian. "We expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn't concede any chances." Estevao scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras. The Brazilian has been hyped as one of the world's brightest young talents but lacked the composure to finish when he sliced high and wide from the middle of the box. Nottingham Forest made light of manager Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-season fears over a lack of signings with a dominant 3-1 win over a much-changed Brentford. Chris Wood struck twice either side of Dan Ndyoe's debut goal for Forest on a nightmare afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews. "It was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals," said Nuno. "This is why we are insisting on a good balanced squad that gives us options and solutions." The Bees have lost their manager, captain and top scorer in the off-season. Thomas Frank left to take charge of Tottenham, Bryan Mbeumo got his dream move to Manchester United and Arsenal secured Christian Norgaard. Yoane Wissa was also missing from the Brentford squad ahead of an expected move to Newcastle. Igor Thiago's first goal for the club from the penalty spot late on was the only consolation for the visitors. "I do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn't good enough," said Andrews. kca/pb/nf

NFL preseason live updates: Caleb Williams debuts under head coach Ben Johnson, Tyler Shough starts for Saints
[NFL preseason schedule | NFL team feeds | NFL preseason live blog] The second week of NFL preseason action is in full swing, and there are plenty of storylines to follow. Caleb Williams is starting for the Bears on national television Sunday night vs. the Bills, our first glimpse of the 2024 No. 1 overall draft pick under new head coach Ben Johnson. That game headlines Frank Schwab's top QB situations to watch this week. Later, Tyler Shough gets the start for the Saints as he competes with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener for QB1 in New Orleans. He threw for 165 yards on 15-of-22 passing in the Saints' preseason opener. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] On Saturday, Giants rookie Jaxson Dart put up another impressive preseason performance coming off his gem last week against the Bills. On Saturday against the Jets, he completed 14 of 16 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown to go along with a TD run. Could starting QB Russell Wilson be hearing footsteps? Rookie Dillon Gabriel saw his first action of preseason Saturday, and it was an up-and-down day for the third-round pick. He finished 13-of-18 for 143 yards passing but also turned it over twice. He thew a pick 6 and also lost a fumble on a botched handoff exchange. He was otherwise solid and in control in the passing game. Fellow rookie QB Shedeur Sanders sat out due to an oblique injury. Much will be made in the coming days, especially on the talking heads shows, about his in-game comments of the QB competition he's in with Sanders. Gabriel later clarified he was referring to the media, not Sanders. Elsewhere in the QB world, the Colts battle for the starting job continues to heat up, with Daniel Jones ending up 7 of 11 passes for 101 yards while Anthony Richardson competed 6 of 11 passes for 73 yards. Those two appear to be neck-and-neck for the starting job, and head coach Shane Steichen told reporters he plans to decide the starter "very soon."
