A day after being sentenced to life imprisonment in a rape case , suspended JD(S) leader Prajwal Revanna was assigned a prisoner number at Bengaluru's Parappana Agrahara Central prison, jail authorities said on Sunday.Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister and JDS supremo H D Deve Gowda, spent his first night in jail following Saturday's court verdict that found him guilty. He was reportedly in tears and appeared visibly distressed.Prison doctors assessed his health late on Saturday night to ensure his medical condition was stable."He broke down during the medical check-up and expressed his anguish to the staff," a senior official said.Prajwal has reportedly informed the staff that he has approached the High Court challenging the conviction.The former MP is currently lodged in a high-security cell and is being provided enhanced security.According to prison officials, the standard dress code for convicts is being followed, and he will be required to wear the uniform given to prisoners.Prisoner number 15528 was officially allotted to him on Sunday morning, they added.Prajwal was on Saturday sentenced to prison term for the remainder of his life, while the court slapped an overall fine of Rs 11.50 lakh on him, directing that Rs 11.25 lakh be paid to the victim, a domestic help of the family of the accused.A court here had convicted Prajwal Revanna (34) in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases against him.The Special Court for MPs/MLAs Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat pronounced the verdict on Saturday, after convicting Prajwal a day earlier.The case pertains to a 48-year-old woman who was working as a domestic help at the family's Gannikada farmhouse in Hassan district's Holenarasipura.She was allegedly raped twice -- at Hassan farm house and Bengaluru residence-- in 2021 and the act recorded by the accused on his mobile phone.Prajwal was booked under sections 376(2)(k) (being in a position of control or dominance over a woman, commits rape on such woman), 376 (2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 201 (disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, and Section 66E (violation of privacy) of the IT Act, by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed the case.The court sentenced Prajwal Revanna to imprisonment for life and imposed Rs 5 lakh as fine, under section 376(2)(k), and imprisonment for life which shall mean remainder of natural life along with Rs 5 lakh fine under section 376(2)(n).He has been also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for three years and Rs 25,000 fine under section 354A, rigorous imprisonment for 7 years and Rs 50,000 fine under section 354B, rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and Rs 25,000 fine under section 354C.A two year RI has also been given to Prajwal, with a fine of Rs 10,000 under section 506, imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of Rs 25,000 under section 201, and imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of Rs 25,000 under section 66 E of IT Act.

Maoist with Rs 15 lakh bounty killed in gunfight with security forces in Jharkhand: Police
An area commander of the banned Maoist splinter group, People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), carrying a bounty of Rs 15 lakh on his head, was killed in a gunfight with security forces in Jharkhand's Gumla district, police said on Wednesday. The gunfight between PLFI members and security forces broke out around 9.30 pm on Tuesday in the Changabadi Upartoli area under the Kamdara Police Station limits when forces were carrying out a search operation, a senior officer said. 'As security forces reached Changabadi Upartoli, Maoists started firing at them. Security personnel also retaliated, in which PLFI area commander Martin Kerketta was killed. A weapon was also recovered from his possession,' Gumla superintendent of police (SP) Haris Bin Zaman told PTI. The Gumla SP said he had received a tip-off about the presence of some Maoists in the area, and accordingly, a special team was set up to carry out the operation. The search operation is still going on, the SP added.

Cong padayatra devoid of public support: BJP MLA
Hyderabad: Launching a scathing critique of the Congress-led government, BJP MLA and BJPLP Whip Dhanpal Suryanarayana Gupta on Tuesday described the ongoing Congress padayatra as disconnected from public sentiment and devoid of genuine support. Addressing media persons at the BJP state office, Gupta asserted that the padayatra had become an exercise in political posturing rather than a reflection of people's concerns. Gupta claimed that the Congress was attempting to mask its administrative shortcomings by highlighting its accomplishments over the past 20 months, which, he alleged, were insignificant. 'People are asking—what has the Congress truly delivered in these months? Their padayatra does not resonate with public expectations,' he remarked. He accused the Congress of failing to honor promises made before the 2023 elections, including monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 for women aged 18 and above, the distribution of electric scooters to students, and pension benefits for the elderly and widows. Gupta said these unfulfilled assurances had led to widespread disillusionment. On the issue of backward class (BC) representation, the BJP leader criticized the Congress for not implementing 42% reservation in the cabinet and questioned the rationale behind including Muslims in the BC quota. Referring to recent appointments, he noted that none of the five RTI commissioners announced were from BC communities. Gupta also raised concerns about the state's handling of welfare schemes, citing irregularities in Kalyana Lakshmi disbursements and insufficient budget allocations under the Kamareddy Declaration for BCs. He alleged that Congress had created a health and nutrition crisis in government residential schools and failed to reimburse Rs 6,000 crore in educational fees for BC students. On the alleged Kaleshwaram scam, he demanded a CBI inquiry. He criticized the Justice PC Ghosh Commission's report for lacking clarity. He claimed the inflated cost of motors exposed collusion between Congress and BRS. Gupta predicted electoral backlash against Congress in the upcoming local polls, asserting that the BC community would rally to defeat the party. 'Governance should build trust, not rely on theatrics like padayatras,' he said.

NSA Ajit Doval in Moscow to discuss Trump sanction threat on Indian import of Russian oil
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will hold meetings with senior Russian officials in Moscow on Wednesday (August 6, 2025), to discuss India-Russia defence and security cooperation, oil sanctions, and an upcoming Modi-Putin summit. Mr. Doval's visit to Russia began even as U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would announce 'very substantial' increases to the 25% tariffs on Indian goods expected to kick in on Thursday (August 7, 2025) because of Indian oil purchases from Russia. 'The current escalation of the geopolitical situation will also be discussed. Apart from that the topics will include such pressing matters as supplies of Russian oil [to India],' Russia's official TASS agency reported. Among talks on defence cooperation, Mr. Doval is also expected to speak about the delivery of the remaining S-400 missile systems, that played an important role during the India-Pakistan conflict and operation Sindoor in May this year. This is the NSA's first visit to Moscow since Operation Sindoor, although he attended the SCO NSA meeting in Beijing in June and met with Mr. Shoigu's deputy, Russia's Security Council Deputy Secretary Aleksandr Venediktov there. In addition, Russia's recent decision to grant recognition to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan is also expected to come up. While Mr. Doval's visit was scheduled some weeks ago, he is expected to talk about India's stand on the U.S. threats and tariffs and will also prepare for the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India later this year for the annual summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The two sides will also possibly discuss the latest moves for talks between Russia and Ukraine, after the Kremlin said on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) that U.S. Special envoy Steve Witkoff will be in Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Announcing the upcoming visit of Mr. Witkoff on Tuesday (August 5, 2025), Mr. Putin's Presidential aide Dmitry Peshkov said that Mr. Putin was prepared to meet Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after expert-level talks but gave no timeline for the meeting. When asked about Mr. Trump's latest threats against India, Mr. Peshkov said that Russia believes 'sovereign countries must have, and do have, the right to choose their trade partners, the partners in trade and economic cooperation, on their own, and independently determine those modes of trade and economic cooperation that suit the interests of a country in question.' Later this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will also visit Moscow for talks on the visit, which has been delayed for several years due to the Ukraine conflict which began in February 2022. PM Modi had visited Moscow last July, reviving the summit after a gap of three years. Mr. Doval travelled to Moscow overnight, leaving Delhi after the official and bilateral meetings during Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s State visit to Delhi. In the U.S., Mr. Trump doubled down on the threats against India that came despite a strong statement from the Ministry of External Affairs that called U.S. and EU sanctions on India's import of Russian oil 'unjustified and unreasonable'. 'India has not been a good trading partner, because they do a lot of business with us, but we don't do business with them. So, we settled on 25% (tariff), but I think I'm going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they're buying Russian oil,' Mr. Trump told CNBC in an interview. Since 2022, India increased its oil imports from Russia multi-fold, defying pleas from European countries to stop increasing Russian revenues, from procuring less than a percent of its imports from Russia, to nearly 40% of its oil at its peak. After the U.S. announced plans for penalty tariffs on India last week, many Indian oil importers have reduced their demand, although the government said it would not submit to the tariffs by the U.S. and sanctions by the European Union. In its statement on Monday (August 4, 2025), the MEA had also pointed out that the U.S. and EU continue to trade on other goods with Russia.
