DMK names Rajya Sabha candidates, allocates one seat to Kamal Haasan-led MNM

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has on Wednesday announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for 19 June 2025.
The Dravidian party re-nominated its incumbent member in the Upper House, senior advocate P Wilson and also named two others; party's Salem-based leader SR Sivalingam and Ruqayya Malik alias Kavignar Salma, a poet, writer and party office-bearer.
One seat has been allocated to the Kamal Haasan-led Makkal Needhi Maiam, fulfilling a commitment made during the 2024 Lok Sabha election alliance. With this seat, the actor-turned-politician is expected to enter the Rajya Sabha.
In March 2024, Kamal Haasan joined the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) ahead of the national elections, pledging support without contesting the polls. In return, the DMK assured MNM a Rajya Sabha seat, a promise now being honored.

AAP alleges fertiliser shortage in U.P. cooperative societies

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday raised concerns over the shortage of DAP and urea fertilisers in more than half of the cooperative societies across Uttar Pradesh. Vanshraj Dubey, the AAP's spokesperson for Uttar Pradesh, flayed the state government for its 'failure to address the issue'. He alleged that the government's inaction was a clear example of its anti-farmer stance. 'More than 50% of cooperative societies in the state are facing a severe shortage of DAP and urea fertilisers,' Dubey claimed while talking to media persons. 'The government has failed to take adequate measures to address the crisis, despite repeated complaints from farmers,' he alleged. The party has demanded immediate review of fertiliser supply, action against responsible officials and transparent distribution of fertilisers. Party workers' 2-day meet in Barabanki Vinay Patel, AAP chief for Ayodhya region, on Sunday said a two-day conference of party workers of the Ayodhya region will be organised in Barabanki district from June 10. Sanjay Singh, AAP's state in charge and Rajya Sabha MP, will be the chief guest at the event. The party has already organised similar programmes in Meerut and Firozabad in western Uttar Pradesh and in Brij province. A training camp will also be organised for party's office-bearers of Ayodhya region, including block, assembly, and district committee members from 11 districts, on June 11. The AAP aims to strengthen its organisation in Uttar Pradesh through regional conferences and training camps.

NDA will dethrone TN, West Bengal govts in 2026 : Amit Shah

Chennai, June 8 (UNI) Asserting that the BJP-led NDA would dethrone the present dispensation in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the NDA would form governments in these two states next year. Addressing the state, district and mandal level party office bearers at Madurai after offering worship at the Meenakshi Amman temple as part of his 2-day visit, he said the ruling DMK will be defeated in 2026 polls and an NDA government headed by the BJP-AIADMK would be formed. He also said besides Tamil Nadu, in West Bengal also the NDA will form governments in 2026. Criticising the DMK as a 100 per cent failed government, Mr Shah cited the alleged Rs, 1000 crore irregularities unearthed by ED in the state-owned TASMAC. "Using these funds, at least two classrooms could have been built in each school across the state", he said. He said he was living in Delhi but his ears are always on Tamil Nadu. Referring to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin's remarks that 'Not even Amit Shah, no Shah can rule TN", the Union Minister said Mr Stalin is right. "It's not me, but the people of Tamil Nadu will defeat you (DMK)," he said. Earlier, he began his address to the party cadres by apologising to them for not being able to talk in Tamil, which he said was one of the greatest languages. UNI GV 1915
