Authorities are continuing to search for the final passenger, per local media outlet Jakarta GlobeSeveral people have been rescued and one person remains missing after a speedboat capsized in Indonesia, according to reports.
At around 11:00 a.m. local time on Monday, July 14, a boat carrying 18 passengers sank after being hit by high waves due to severe weather in the Sipora Strait, off the Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra, ABC News and Indonesian outlet Jakarta Globe reported.
The passengers included 10 local government officials, two crew members, three children and four relatives, according to reports. The speedboat had departed the town of Sikakap and was heading to the town of Tuapejat, per ABC News.
Seventeeen people have been rescued as of Tuesday, July 15, according to Jakarta Globe. The survivors were found in stable conditions 'across three locations' in Mappinang, Guluguluk, and Bulau villages of Indonesia, the outlet reported.
'We have located 17 survivors, and we have received encouraging information that the remaining person may have also survived,' Mentawai Search and Rescue Office chief Rudi told Jakarta Globe.
According to the outlet, the team is working to verify reports that the missing passenger has been found stranded in a local village. The passenger was identified as Guntur, an employee of the Mentawai public works department, per Jakarta Globe.
It was initially reported that at least 10 people were missing after the boat capsized on Monday. Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency (SAR) was notified of the incident six hours later at 5:40 p.m. local time and took 90 minutes to reach the area, per Jakarta Globe.
Eight people were reported to have been rescued on Monday, per The Independent. They were found after they swam ashore with life vests to Sikakap Village, Jakarta Globe reported, citing SAR officials.
"Some of the victims were seen floating on the surface, but the team couldn't reach them in time, and they eventually disappeared from sight,' Dhio Ulwi Winanda, head of operations at SAR, told the outlet.
The survivors were reportedly evacuated in a KN SAR Ramawijaya vessel to the Indonesian town of Tuapeijat, where they received medical checks and identification.
'We will continue the search until we find the last victim,' Winanda told Jakarta Globe.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Millions of people visited South Florida beaches in 2024, but only a few were responsible for keeping them safe. In 2024, Miami Beach Ocean Rescue made 577 rescues from the water, while Fort Lauderdale's Ocean Rescue made 196. These teams train both in the field and in the classroom to prepare for taking a lifeguard stand to protect the public. "We put them through an emergency medical responder certification class," said Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue Lt. Gio Serrano. "It's a 56-hour class that is a combination of classroom and hands-on skills in basic life support." This is in addition to 48 hours in a lifeguard certification course to prepare them for open water and 40 hours of shadowing in the field. Members of the Ocean Rescue team train seven days a week to stay physically fit for the job. This includes five days on the beach running and swimming laps. One portion of the lifeguard swimming exam requires a person to complete a 500-meter open water swim in under 10 minutes. Lifeguards are responsible for making rescues, but they say their top priority is preventing beachgoers from ever needing one. "We speak to the public. We let them know where the rip currents are at. We let them know where it's safe to swim at," said Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue lifeguard Marcus Goolsby. He goes on to say families should feel comfortable approaching their local lifeguard to ask about any hazards at the beach during their visit. While saving swimmers from rip currents and helping with jellyfish stings are a couple of risks lifeguards help navigate, Serrano emphasized the lack of supervision as one of the biggest risks they face. "When you're on the beach with your kids, you should be watching your kids," he said. "Not on your phone. Not reading a magazine." If you're interested in becoming an ocean lifeguard, there are multiple positions at various beaches across South Florida. While the application for full-time positions at Fort Lauderdale Beach is closed, they will be accepting applications for part-time lifeguards from Aug. 1 to Sept. 8. Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival visitor, 97, rescued after fall into river
Activities at the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival in West Michigan unexpectedly included an actual rescue Tuesday after a tour visitor fell into the Grand River. The 97-year-old man who was rescued had fallen about 6 feet from a deck into the river after losing his balance while using his walker, the Coast Guard Great Lakes District reported on social media. He was taking part in ship tours at Escanaba Park at the time of the fall, which happened about 7 p.m. Seaman Joseph Turk, who is a crew member with the Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay, immediately jumped into the water to assist the visitor. Turk helped keep the man afloat by treading water for over 20 minutes while crews worked from the deck to reach them with appropriate equipment and rescue the victim. The man had injuries to his right hand and leg as a result of his fall, and was taken by EMS to Trinity Health Grand Haven Hospital for treatment. Turk has been in the Coast Guard for less than a year, the report said. The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival started July 25 and continues through August 3, honoring the U.S. Coast Guard with a slate of activities that includes ship tours, parades, live music, fireworks, a car show and family activities. More than 350,000 people attend the event each year, the festival organizers said.

East Lothian RNLI team rescues three people 'stranded off beach in high tide'
An RNLI lifeboat undertook a rescue operation after three people became stranded off an East Lothian beach. Squads from the RNLI North Berwick Lifeboat sprung unto action on Tuesday, July 29 around 3.56pm when they received a call for help. Three members of the public had been cut off by incoming tide on rocks near the South Carr Beacon at Seacliff, to the east of North Berwick. The trio found temporary safety on a rocky outcrop called Great Carr where they had been fishing for mackerel. While the area offered safety until crews arrived, the tide was quickly encroaching and it would have been at least six hours before the tide dropped enough for them to return to shore by their initial route. The three people were escorted back to shore by RNLI volunteers where they were met by members of the North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team. The incident comes just days after the North Berwick RNLI was called to rescue a capsized kayaker on Saturday, July 26. Volunteer crew members jumped into action, leaving the North Berwick Pipe Band's 125 th Anniversary, making their way through crowds on foot and bike to help the person in distress. The RNLI urges residents to check tide tables prior to heading out on shore excursions. They recommend against wading back when aught in high tide, as tidal current can be extremely strong.
