By: Reuters Text Size: Rescuers search for victims after the ferry sank. – AP JAKARTA: Four people died, 38 were missing and 23 survived after a ferry carrying 65 people sank near the Indonesian island of Bali, the country's Search and Rescue agency said on Thursday. The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving East Java province's Banyuwangi port on its way to Bali late on Wednesday, the agency said on Thursday. The boat was carrying 53 passengers and 12 crew members, as well as 22 vehicles, the agency said. A search for the missing is underway although it is being hampered by strong currents and winds, the agency added. There has been no official statement on the nationalities of the passengers, but a manifest list broadcast by news channel MetroTV indicated there were no foreigners on board. Ferries are a common mode of transport in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, and accidents are common as lax safety standards often allow vessels to be overloaded without adequate life-saving equipment. SANDAKAN: Fire broke out at a wood processing factory owned by Sinora in Batu Sapi, here, affecting the machinery area where sawdust is stored (dust collector), Thursday morning. The incident was reported at 10.24am, and the fire and rescue team arrived at the scene at 10.40am, after traveling some 16km from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station. Advertisement According to Acting Station Chief of the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station, PBKI Alan Ayuh, the fire affected an area measuring 10x15ft, with approximately 20 per cent of the structure damaged. Firefighting operations were swiftly carried out using 200ft of hoses via dividing breeching and two water jets. Water was sourced from the fire engine and nearby fire hydrants, with the factory's Emergency Response Team (ERT) also assisting in the operation. No casualty was reported in the incident. The fire was successfully brought under control by 1pm, and the operation was wrapped up at 1.08pm. KOTA BELUD: Sixteen residents lost their home when a fire destroyed a two-storey house in Kampung Labuan here at 3pm on Wednesday. There were no injuries or fatalities reported. Advertisement Kota Belud District Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Assistant Fire Superintendent Elgie Bakuk, said the department received an emergency call at 3.06pm and seven personnel were dispatched to the scene with one fire engine and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) utility vehicle. He said upon arrival the firefighters found a semi-permanent house 70 per cent razed. 'The flames spread rapidly, but all 16 residents, including two young children escaped unharmed. But property and some important documents belonging to the residents could not be saved, he said. Elgie the firemen prevented the fire from spreading to nearby houses. Indonesia rescuers find 31 survivors, in ongoing search after ferry sinks near Bali

As of Thursday afternoon, 31 people had been rescued from the ferry's 53 passengers and 12 crew members, the National Search and Rescue Agency said in a statement. The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank almost half an hour after leaving Ketapang port in the East Java town of Banyuwangi late Wednesday for a 50-kilometre (30-mile) trip to Bali's Gilimanuk port, authorities said. A helicopter and nine boats including two tug boats and two inflatable boats searched for survivors with assistance from fishermen and people onshore. Strong waves up to 2m (6.5 feet) high and darkness hampered emergency responders overnight, but an official said improved weather and sea conditions Thursday morning were assisting the search effort. "For today's search we are focusing on searching on the water, as the initial victims were found in the water between the location of the accident toward Gilimanuk port,' Surabaya Search and Rescue head Nanang Sigit said in a statement. An officer at the port witnessed the sinking before rescuers could be alerted. "The ferry could not be contacted via radio from the beginning. Then it could be contacted by other ships from the same company. But the ship was already in a tilting condition,' Sigit said. Many of those rescued were unconscious after drifting in choppy waters for hours, Banyuwangi Police Chief Rama Samtama Putra said. Indonesian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Survivors told rescuers there appeared to be a leak in the engine room of the ferry, which was carrying 22 vehicles including 14 trucks. Some family members arrived at the port in a panic or weeping as they sought information about their loved ones. Survivors were taken to nearby medical facilities including Jembrana Regional Hospital in Bali. "When the ferry started to tilt, I initially intended to jump into the sea, but the ship quickly sank, so I did not jump any more but sank with the water entering the ship, maybe about 7m (23 feet) deep, so I immediately climbed up to the top,' said Supardi, 64, a survivor at the hospital. He and three other people grouped together in the water and used life jackets to say afloat, he said. Ferry tragedies are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where ferries are often used as transport and safety regulations can lapse. - AP _
