Suspect arrested after murder of Mpumalanga police sergeant

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of Sergeant Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni (47). According to Mpumalanga News, he was shot dead in Schoemansdal in the early hours of Saturday. The national police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, shared the news of the arrest during a visit to Mtshweni's home in Schoemansdal yesterday. Masemola did not elaborate much on the arrest and said details would be shared at a later stage. The national commissioner led a delegation of high-ranking officials that included the deputy national commissioner for policing, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, Mpumalanga police acting provincial commissioner Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Jackie Macie, and Ehlanzeni police district commissioner Major General Dorah Xaba. The traditional leadership of the Shongwe chieftaincy also attended. The delegation also visited the scene of the crime. During the visit, Masemola reiterated that a reward of R150 000 has been offered to anyone with information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of Mtshweni's killers. Mtshweni was one of the police members who attended to a business burglary at Schoemansdal on Saturday morning at about 02:45. 'While assessing the crime scene, the officers were attacked by about 10 gunmen. Our member was shot in the upper body and sadly passed away after he was taken to hospital,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. He said Mtshweni was a member of the Visible Policing Unit at Schoemansdal Police Station and had 18 years of service in the SAPS. Anyone who has information that may assist in the investigation is requested to call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or send information via the MySAPS app. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. 2 Limpopo police sergeants die in domestic violence incident

Two police sergeants died in a suspected domestic violence incident at Nkuna Kraal Mall in Nkuzana village in the Mopani District of Limpopo, on Saturday afternoon. Polokwane Review reports that, according to the Limpopo police, the female victim, a sergeant stationed at Beit Bridge Port of Entry, was with two adults and her six-year-old child when her estranged husband, also a sergeant, attached to the Thohoyandou K9 Unit, approached her. The couple had reportedly been separated for about seven months. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says an argument broke out, during which the female sergeant was shot in her upper body, allegedly by her husband with his service firearm. 'When he attempted to run to the vehicle to flee the scene, the community who observed the entire incident chased and assaulted him, setting him alight next to his vehicle. The vehicle was burnt beyond recognition,' his statement reads. Ledwaba says the female sergeant and her husband died at the scene. The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expresses shock at the tragedy and urged SAPS members to seek professional help for domestic disputes rather than resorting to violence. 'The SAPS has in place an Employee Health and Wellness Programme that is offered free of charge. We call upon members to make use of these services that are at their disposal,' she says. Ledwaba adds that cases of murder have been opened and urges anyone with information to contact detective Sergeant Stanley Chauke on 072 554 3141, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, or via the MySAPS app. 'Investigations continue,' he concludes. Acting police minister Feroz Cachalia condemns spate of police killings

Three police officers were shot while on duty in 24 hours. Acting Police Minister Feroz Cachalia has condemned the spate of police killings in the country. This comes after three police officers were shot while on duty last week. Police killings Over the weekend, Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni from Schoemansdal Saps in Mpumalanga was killed while responding to a burglary incident near Komatipoort. On Friday, 8 August 2025, two police officers attached to the Florida Police Station were disarmed and gunned down while transporting Jabulani Moyo from the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court back to prison after his court appearance for a February 2023 business robbery. Police are offering a 150 000 reward to anyone with information on the whereabouts of Moyo and another R150 000 reward for anyone who could assist police in locating at least 10 suspects who shot and killed Mtshweni. The minister has assured the families that the Saps is hard at work to ensure that those responsible for the heinous crime are brought to book. 'This is just another reminder of the difficult and dangerous work the South African Police Service and its members do on behalf of our people, and the dangerous and vicious nature of the criminals out there who are willing to kill without mercy. 'I am confident that in this particular case, the suspects and the police are already making progress, that the suspects will be apprehended and that they will face justice,' Cachalia said. 'We strongly condemn these heinous crimes, and we will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice. We call on all Saps members to remain alert at all times and to make full and appropriate use of the tools of trade issued to them.' Jabulani Moyo On Saturday, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola said police have also established a multidisciplinary team led by crime intelligence searching for Moyo. 'A lot of questions have arisen on whether the awaiting trial prisoner was handcuffed. It is standard procedure that all awaiting trial prisoners must be appropriately restrained and placed at the back of a van. 'On whether Moyo was handcuffed or not and why members were travelling in a sedan, all these questions are under investigation…. For now, our focus is on finding Moyo. We believe he has the answers we are looking for, and we will not rest until we find him,' Masemola said. Masemola pleaded with police officers on the ground to implement the objectives of the police safety strategy, urging them to make sure their 'firearms are in a good working condition and that they have all the necessary tools of trade to do their work.'
