Drunk driver kills pedestrian in horror crash - but tells police she hit 'homeless person'

Ivana Gomez, 32, is accused of ploughing her BMW into 41-year-old Kathryn Kipnis - who was not homeless - an impact which dragged the woman for more than 230 feet
A suspected drink-driver smashed her vehicle into a pedestrian - fatally injuring her - before heartlessly telling officers the victim was "just a homeless person".

Ivana Gomez, 32, allegedly drove her BMW straight into 41 year old Kathryn Kipnis - who was not homeless - with such force that the woman was dragged over 230 feet before being "violently thrown off" the car.

A police officer who witnessed the shocking collision in Miami, Florida, had to reach speeds exceeding 100 mph to catch up with Gomez as she fled the scene.

The motorist was eventually apprehended when she became trapped at traffic lights, according to authorities.
Gomez, who is facing manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges, "spontaneously stated that it was just a homeless person that I hit and it is just an accident," the crime report states, reports the Mirror.

Officers noted that Gomez reeked of alcohol, displayed bloodshot, watery eyes and had fresh sick in her vehicle, WSVN reports.

She failed a field sobriety test and immediately requested legal representation, the police report continued.
Body-worn camera footage released this week shows Gomez in handcuffs and barefoot shortly after her arrest on the DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide charges in Miami.
Nevertheless, the footage doesn't capture her dismissing the victim as "just a homeless person" - a statement Gomez refuted when questioned during her initial court appearance in May. However, as they prepare a case for Gomez's next court appearance, the police continue to assert this.

They have already shared with the media shocking images of the wrecked BMW and a large, head-shaped hole in the windscreen.
At the May hearing, prosecutor Laura Adams stated that Gomez "hit the victim so hard that the victim's head went into the vehicle, through the windscreen, and some of the victim's hair got caught on the passenger's seat belt."
Yet at that same hearing, in response to the "homeless person" comment, Gomez told the judge: "Your Honour, I never said that. I did not say that whatsoever. That's false."
Ms Kipnis, who hails from Miami, was not homeless and was returning home after an evening out with friends, her father informed reporters earlier this year.
Gomez, whose blood alcohol level was. 112 - exceeding the US legal limit of .08 - five hours post-crash, remains detained on a $251,000 (£187,000) bond.

Terrifying moment police officer saves man's life after 'scary f***' 160mph chase that saw driver weaving through traffic and 'brake-checking' cops

This is the terrifying moment a police officer saved a man's life after a 'scary f***' 160mph chase. Shocking police dashcam footage captured wanted criminal Patrick Connors, 45, hurtling down the M1 and M69 in a powerful BMW 5 Series. Connors shot past cards on the busy motorways at a speed of 60mph, prompting one police officer to say in response: 'That was scary as ****.' Officers had started following Connors on February 19 as he was wanted for failing to appear in court for fraud charges in Wrexham, north Wales, in 2024. During the 20 minute pursuit, described by police as 'high risk', Connors ran a red light and sped along the hard shoulder of the motorway at 130mph. Then, while being chased by officers, he twice attempted to 'brake check' the police car by swerving across the middle and fast lane. Eventually, the fugitive was caught when he suddenly stopped the car in the fast lane before scrambling out and running towards the central barrier. The terrifying footage shows a quick-thinking officer begging Connors not to attempt to run across the opposite motorway, shouting: 'Don't go across the carriageway, you'll get killed. 'Don't do it buddy. Don't do it.' He then gestures to Connors, stating: 'Come here, come here, don't do it. Mate, come here. Just stay there'. The police officer behind the camera is then heard shouting 'help me' to other officers at the scene as he attempts to hold Connor's down. The officer, who tells Connors to 'just chill', then manages to grab his T-shirt and wrestle him to the ground before placing handcuffs on him. In response, Connors insists: 'I've got arthritis, you dragged me over the barrier mate', to which the officer then quips: 'Well you were jumping over the motorway barrier a minute ago. 'I didn't want you getting run over, I probably saved your life.' At Mold Crown Court this week, Connors, of Queensferry, Wales, admitted dangerous driving and failing to stop. The 45-year-old also admitting acquiring criminal property, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. The court heard he gave false details to police and had previously used 17 aliases. He received a jail sentence of three years and was also banned from driving for five years.

Southwest Airlines pilot arrested as he was about to fly plane after drinking alcohol

A pilot was pulled off a flight by police moments before the plane was about to take off as officers suspected he was intoxicated. Bodycam footage shared by Savannah Airport Police on Thursday (14 August) shows Southwest pilot David Allsop, 52, speaking to police about his recent alcohol consumption after he was escorted off the plane earlier this year. Allsop said that he drank a 'few light beers' the night before with his first officer, and the police officer then commented that he smelled of alcohol. When he was asked to undertake a field sobriety test, he initially refused saying that it 'wasn't necessary' but later agreed. He failed two of three tests and was taken away for further questioning. Allsop was charged with a DUI on 15 January and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) revoked his pilot certification.

Chart topper Sean Kingston jailed with mother over $1million fraud scheme

Beautiful Girls singer Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted of a conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud. Sean Kingston has been jailed in Florida after being convicted of a $1million fraud scheme, along with his mother. ‌ The Beautiful Girls singer, born Kisean Paul Anderson, and his mum, Janice Eleanor Turner, were convicted of a conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of wire fraud in March. ‌ He has been sentenced to three and a half years behind bars and was taken into custody immediately, reports the Mirror. ‌ U.S. Judge David Leibowitz also ordered that a restitution hearing should be held within 90 days. Kingston's sentence is to be followed by three years of supervised release. Leibowitz also sentenced the singer's mum to five years in prison last month, while Sean's sentencing was postponed. The case involved the pair falsely claiming to pay for luxury items, including cars, jewellery, and other high-value goods, by pretending to make bank transfers that were never processed. They managed to fraudulently acquire over $1 million worth of goods and money. Sean and Janice's trial took place from March 24 to March 28 in Broward County, Florida, and concluded with the jury deliberating for approximately three and a half hours before reaching their verdict, according to reports. They convicted them of conspiracy and multiple counts of wire fraud. The charges involved defrauding a car dealership out of $160,000 (£123,000) for a Cadillac Escalade, stealing nearly $500,000 (£386,000) worth of jewellery, and obtaining other goods like a custom bed valued at $86,000 (£66,000) without paying for them. ‌ Since the trial, Sean had been under house arrest with an electronic tag and had to pay a bond to be released from jail, while his mother remained in federal custody. Kingston, 35, and his mother were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team raided Kingston's rented mansion in suburban Fort Lauderdale. Turner was taken into custody during the raid, while Kingston was arrested at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California's Mojave Desert, where he was performing. According to court records, Kingston used social media from April 2023 to March 2024 to arrange purchases of high-end merchandise. After negotiating deals, Kingston would invite the sellers to one of his high-end Florida homes and promise to feature them and their products on social media. ‌ Investigators said that when it came time to pay, Kingston or his mother would text the victims fake wire receipts for the luxury merchandise, which included a bulletproof Escalade, watches and a 19-foot (5.9-meter) LED TV, investigators said. When the funds never cleared, victims often contacted Kingston and Turner repeatedly, but were either never paid or received money only after filing lawsuits or contacting law enforcement. Kingston, who was born in Florida and raised in Jamaica, shot to fame at age 17 with the 2007 hit 'Beautiful Girls,' which laid his lyrics over Ben E. King's 1961 song 'Stand By Me.' His other hits include 2007's 'Take You There' and 2009's 'Fire Burning.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
