4 Maoists gunned down in encounter with security forces along Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border
NAGPUR: Four Maoist were killed in a fierce exchange of gunfire with security forces in Gadchiroli district, near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, officials confirmed on Friday.
The early-morning encounter took place near the village of Kawande, close to the Indravati River, following a coordinated operation by the Gadchiroli Police and the
Central Reserve Police Force
(CRPF).
The mission was launched on Thursday, based on credible intelligence inputs about Maoist activity in the area.
The joint operation, conducted under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Ramesh and supervised by Superintendent of Police Neelotpal and DIG Ankit Goyal, involved 12 units of the elite C60 commando force and CRPF personnel—around 300 in total.
Despite heavy rain and difficult terrain, the security forces advanced from Kawande and Nelgunda to set up a cordon along the riverbank. On Friday morning, as the search operation intensified, Maoists opened fire on the commandos, prompting a two-hour firefight.
'This operation was marked by strategic precision and remarkable resilience from our forces,' said Inspector General Sandip Patil, who heads Maharashtra's Anti-Maoist Operations unit.

After the encounter, security personnel recovered the bodies of four Maoists, as well as a cache of arms and supplies, including an automatic Self-Loading Rifle, two .303 rifles, a country-made Bharmar firearm, walkie-talkies, camping gear and Maoist literature.
Officials said there were no casualties among the security forces, underscoring the effectiveness of their training and planning. The area remains under surveillance as the search for other Maoist operatives continues.
'This is a major breakthrough,' a senior Gadchiroli Police official told the BBC. 'These Maoists were attempting to destabilise the region. Their elimination sends a strong message that we remain vigilant and committed to securing the area.'
Gadchiroli, located in eastern Maharashtra, has long been affected by Maoist insurgency. Security forces have intensified their operations in recent years, targeting Maoist hideouts and disrupting their supply chains. The recovery of communication equipment and weapons suggests the group was preparing for further action.

Chhattisgarh has proposed ₹49,000 crore mega irrigation and hydropower projects in Bastar as anti-Naxal operations advance across Left-Wing Extremism-affected districts. About 45 years after the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award allocated 301 TMC of water from the Indravati River to Chhattisgarh (then part of Madhya Pradesh), the state has proposed two projects - construction of the Bodhghat dam and interlinking the Indravati and Mahanadi rivers. Despite being allocated 301 TMC of water from the Indravati, the state currently utilises only 25 TMC. The Bodhghat project proposes to use 96.27 TMC. Due to Naxal activity, no dam or related infrastructure could be implemented in Bastar. Of the 8.15 lakh hectares of crop area, irrigation facilities currently exist for only around 1.36 lakh hectares. According to sources, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week and urged that the two projects be granted "national status". This would ensure central funding. In a letter to the Prime Minister, reviewed by ET, Sai stated, "Given the high cost of the project, it is extremely difficult for the state to implement it with its own resources. Therefore, it is requested that these projects be declared as National Projects, so that their implementation can be ensured for the development of Bastar." In addition to irrigation, the Bodhghat multipurpose project is expected to generate 125 MW of electricity and produce 4,824 tonnes of fish annually. It will also supply water for drinking and industrial use. As per the state's proposal, 269 villages will benefit directly.
