NAGPUR: Four Maoist were killed in a fierce exchange of gunfire with security forces in Gadchiroli district, near the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border, officials confirmed on Friday.
The early-morning encounter took place near the village of Kawande, close to the Indravati River, following a coordinated operation by the Gadchiroli Police and the
Central Reserve Police Force
(CRPF).
The mission was launched on Thursday, based on credible intelligence inputs about Maoist activity in the area.
The joint operation, conducted under the leadership of Additional Superintendent of Police Ramesh and supervised by Superintendent of Police Neelotpal and DIG Ankit Goyal, involved 12 units of the elite C60 commando force and CRPF personnel—around 300 in total.
Despite heavy rain and difficult terrain, the security forces advanced from Kawande and Nelgunda to set up a cordon along the riverbank. On Friday morning, as the search operation intensified, Maoists opened fire on the commandos, prompting a two-hour firefight.
'This operation was marked by strategic precision and remarkable resilience from our forces,' said Inspector General Sandip Patil, who heads Maharashtra's Anti-Maoist Operations unit.

After the encounter, security personnel recovered the bodies of four Maoists, as well as a cache of arms and supplies, including an automatic Self-Loading Rifle, two .303 rifles, a country-made Bharmar firearm, walkie-talkies, camping gear and Maoist literature.
Officials said there were no casualties among the security forces, underscoring the effectiveness of their training and planning. The area remains under surveillance as the search for other Maoist operatives continues.
'This is a major breakthrough,' a senior Gadchiroli Police official told the BBC. 'These Maoists were attempting to destabilise the region. Their elimination sends a strong message that we remain vigilant and committed to securing the area.'
Gadchiroli, located in eastern Maharashtra, has long been affected by Maoist insurgency. Security forces have intensified their operations in recent years, targeting Maoist hideouts and disrupting their supply chains. The recovery of communication equipment and weapons suggests the group was preparing for further action.

A delegation of MLAs called on Hon'ble Governor Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan. Protests were held across Manipur on Saturday night over the arrests of leaders of the Meitei organisation Arambai Tenggol, prompting the administration to impose prohibitory orders and suspend internet services in five Imphal valley districts. The MLAs' delegation expressed concern over the recent arrest of Asem Kanan, a leader of Arambai Tenggol. BJP legislator K Ibomcha, who was part of the delegation, claimed that altogether five people were arrested in connection with earlier incidents of violence, which triggered widespread protests in the northeastern state since Saturday. The CBI said it has arrested a member of the Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol at Imphal Airport on Sunday for his alleged involvement in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023, while the police did not disclose details of the four others. Khundrakpam MLA Lokeswore, speaking to the media after the meeting, said that Asem Kanan's arrest was not linked to Arambai Tenggol. Arambai Tenggol has announced a 10-day total shutdown, including the closure of all government offices, intensifying the current unrest. Sources say that Manipur's Rajya sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba and former chief minister N Biren Singh will fly to New Delhi for Manipur crisis talks with central leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Sources indicate that the discussions will focus on restoring peace, forming a stable government, and addressing public grievances. The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in the state after chief minister N Biren Singh resigned. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

Chhattisgarh unveils Rs 49,000 crore irrigation & hydropower push in Bastar as anti-Naxal ops clear path
Chhattisgarh has proposed ₹49,000 crore mega irrigation and hydropower projects in Bastar as anti-Naxal operations advance across Left-Wing Extremism-affected districts. About 45 years after the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award allocated 301 TMC of water from the Indravati River to Chhattisgarh (then part of Madhya Pradesh), the state has proposed two projects - construction of the Bodhghat dam and interlinking the Indravati and Mahanadi rivers. Despite being allocated 301 TMC of water from the Indravati, the state currently utilises only 25 TMC. The Bodhghat project proposes to use 96.27 TMC. Due to Naxal activity, no dam or related infrastructure could be implemented in Bastar. Of the 8.15 lakh hectares of crop area, irrigation facilities currently exist for only around 1.36 lakh hectares. With anti-Naxal operations now in full swing in Chhattisgarh, the state government has proposed construction of the ₹29,000 crore Bodhghat dam and the ₹20,000 crore interlinking project. According to the proposal, this will provide irrigation facilities for 7 lakh hectares of land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 7 Mistakes People With $1M+ Make When Hiring Financial Advisors SmartAsset Learn More Undo The two projects will span Naxal-affected districts including Mungeli, Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Dantewada, Sukma, Bijapur, Kanker, and Narayanpur. According to sources, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week and urged that the two projects be granted "national status". This would ensure central funding. In a letter to the Prime Minister, reviewed by ET, Sai stated, "Given the high cost of the project, it is extremely difficult for the state to implement it with its own resources. Therefore, it is requested that these projects be declared as National Projects, so that their implementation can be ensured for the development of Bastar." In addition to irrigation, the Bodhghat multipurpose project is expected to generate 125 MW of electricity and produce 4,824 tonnes of fish annually. It will also supply water for drinking and industrial use. As per the state's proposal, 269 villages will benefit directly. However, there are significant challenges to implementation, including 10,440 hectares of land to be fully submerged, 28 villages to be entirely affected, and 14 to be partially affected. The Indravati-Mahanadi interlinking project will also require clearances from the Central Water Commission and the Ministries of Environment and Tribal Affairs. Live Events

If the local police force won't back our men and women on the thin blue line, we @FBI will," Patel had posted on X, warning the demonstrators after a wave of surprise immigration raids in Los Angeles on Friday triggered citywide protests, tense standoffs with police, and dozens of Social media users took a quick note of Kash Patel's warning to the protesters and hit back at the FBI chief, calling him out for the federal agency's different stance taken on the January 6 rioters, with one user saying, "unless you're doing it for Trump". Another user accused him of "overrunning an election".Most of the January 6 rioters were relieved of charges by US President Donald Trump after he took office for the second time this issued "full, complete and unconditional" pardons for around 1,500 people involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. The group included individuals convicted of violent acts. The move saw Trump fulfilling a campaign promise within the first few hours of his second online tirade against Kash Patel's stern warning continued as another user wrote, "But if you do it wearing Trump merch while rioting at the US Capitol, you'll get a pardon, right, Kash?" More people joined Patel's online bashing, with some of them sharing pictures and videos of rioters clashing with police on January 6, Kash Patel distanced himself from the pardoning of Capitol riots accused during his confirmation hearing as FBI director, saying, "I have always rejected any violence against law enforcement, and I have included in that group specifically addressed any violence against law enforcement on January 6"."I do not agree with the commutation of any sentence of any individual who committed violence against law enforcement," he from Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also invited online ire for writing that the anti-ICE protests are "designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from US soil".
