TAWAU: A woman who was critically injured after being struck while jogging died after a week in Tawau Hospital's intensive care unit. The victim, 41-year-old Darna Tajudin, was pronounced dead at 8.37am today after being declared brain dead. The accident occurred at 7.55pm on Aug 10 at Batu 9, Jalan Apas, when the victim and several friends were jogging from Bandar Sri Indah towards T2 Jalan Apas. On the same day, Tawau district police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said initial investigations revealed the accident happened when a 57-year-old Toyota Hilux driver rear-ended a Perodua Alza driven by a 39-year-old man. "We have yet to confirm when the burial will take place, as we are still awaiting the next procedures since the case is under police investigation."

Perodua Alza bursts into flames after collision on Kesas [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: A Perodua Alza burst into flames after being hit from behind by a Kia Carnival on the Shah Alam Expressway earlier today. South Klang police chief Assistant Commissioner Ramli Kasa said the collision, which also involved a trailer, occurred at about 1.20am on the stretch from Klang to Shah Alam. "Preliminary investigations revealed the accident happened when a Perodua Alza, driven by a 20-year-old man with two passengers, was in the right lane when it was struck from behind by a Kia Carnival, also carrying two passengers and driven by a 20-year-old man. "The impact caused the Perodua Alza to lose control and swerve to the left side of the road, where it caught fire and was completely destroyed," he said in a statement today. Ramli said a 43-year-old man driving a trailer in the middle lane was unable to avoid debris from both cars. He said the driver and passengers of the Perodua Alza were taken to Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang for treatment, while the driver of the Kia Carnival was treated at Pantai Hospital Klang. "No serious injuries were reported in the accident. "The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving," he said. Police have advised all road users to be careful, remain focused while driving, and obey the speed limit.

Loke: Transport Ministry weighs creating safety board to probe major road accidents

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Transport is mulling over the proposal to establish the Malaysian Transportation Safety Board (MTSB), a special body tasked with investigating road accidents in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Minister Anthony Loke said the proposal follows recommendations made by a special task force set up by the ministry to investigate the fatal accident involving members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in Teluk Intan, as well as a tour bus crash carrying students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Gerik, Perak, earlier this year. 'This is currently under consideration at the ministerial level, but establishing a new body or agency is not easy as it involves a long and complex process,' he said in reply to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut) who wanted to know about the government's commitment to implementing the task force's recommendations, particularly the establishment of MTSB. Meanwhile, Loke said the ministry would also introduce several initiatives to elevate the status of the driving profession, including training programmes aimed at producing more competent and professional drivers. 'We want to work together to train more professional drivers. The ministry has several planned actions to uplift the status of this profession…we want drivers to be respected and social status to be elevated,' he said. Additionally, Loke highlighted the ongoing issue of a shortage of bus and lorry drivers due to a lack of interest and low wages, and stressed the ministry's efforts to ensure drivers are fairly compensated in line with their working hours, workload, and the risks they face. 'However, we must not assume that just anyone, even those with criminal records or poor driving histories, can be hired as drivers. We are currently working on a database to identify individuals with past offences, especially those involving dangerous driving, so they can be filtered out,' he added. — Bernama
