Australia raises foreign student visa cap to 295,000, India among countries to benefit

Australia will raise its cap on foreign students by 9% to 295,000 in 2026, the Albanese government announced Monday, with a renewed focus on applicants from Southeast Asia. Australia lifts foreign student cap, shifts focus to South East Asia(Representative image/Unsplash) This comes as the United States has moved in the opposite direction. Under US President Donald Trump's second-term, a sweeping overhaul of the foreign student visa program is underway, marking one of the most significant pullbacks in the country's global education footprint. Australia has decided to increase the limit after a year of tightened migration controls and a 2024 cap of 270,000 that helped reduce what officials described as 'out of control' student numbers, reported Reuters. Australia granted nearly 600,000 student visas in the 2023 financial year, reflecting a post-pandemic boom in education migration. While China and India remain the two largest source countries, Canberra is now strategically pivoting toward Southeast Asia as part of its broader foreign policy to reduce economic dependence on China. India, which remains a leading source of international students in the country, is likely to benefit from the move.. 'This is about making sure international education grows in a way that supports students, universities and the national interest,' said education minister Jason Clare in a statement cited by the news agency. Larger public universities will also be required to demonstrate access to adequate student housing and increase Southeast Asian enrolments to receive higher individual quotas. In Australia, the international education sector contributed over A$51 billion ($33 billion) to the Australian economy in 2024, making it the country's largest services export. US visa curbs signals strategic retreat Meanwhile, the US administration has implemented a series of restrictive measures since early 2025 — including suspensions of new visas for certain universities, a brief ban targeting Harvard, and enhanced social media surveillance for applicants. The result has been a chilling effect on prospective international students, particularly from Asia. Once the world's top destination for higher education, the US is now viewed by many as unpredictable and unsafe. Early 2025 data cited in a Hindustan Times report, indicates a noticeable decline in international applications, especially in graduate STEM programs from India, China, and South Korea.

Judges won't decide who's a true Indian: Priyanka Gandhi on court rebuking Rahul

A day after the Supreme Court rebuked Rahul Gandhi for claiming China had annexed a large stretch of Indian territory, saying a "true Indian" wouldn't make such a remark, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi slammed the remarks, asserting it's not for judges to decide who qualifies as a true Indian."With all due respect to the judiciary, it is not for them to determine who is a true Indian and who is not. The judges will not decide that," Priyanka Gandhi said, speaking to reporters outside the leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, it is Rahul Gandhi's duty to ask questions of the government, the Wayanad MP added. Her remarks come amid a heated political debate sparked by the top court's comments during a hearing of a defamation case against Gandhi. Hearing Rahul Gandhi's challenge against a defamation case over his remarks during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, where he claimed that over 2,000 kilometres of Indian territory were annexed by China and that Indian soldiers were thrashed by the Chinese army, the Supreme Court asked, "How did you know about 2,000 km being annexed by the Chinese?" and remarked, "If you're a true Indian, you wouldn't say it."Priyanka further said, "Rahul Gandhi has always respected the Army and our soldiers... It is the responsibility of the Leader of the Opposition to question the government, and that is what he does."The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the proceedings against Gandhi before a Lucknow court over his remarks about the Army during his December 2022 Bharat Jodo the Supreme Court's censure of the Congress leader, the BJP took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of pledging to "strengthen China", while the Congress hit back, saying every patriotic Indian has demanded answers since the Galwan clash, but the government continues to "obfuscate the truth" with its "DDLJ policy -- Deny, Distract, Lie, and Justify".Calling Gandhi "China guru", the ruling party claimed that the leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha and his party also "hate" the Indian armed forces and that he is being "remotely controlled by foreign forces".Meanwhile, the Congress alleged that the PM Modi-led government is responsible for the biggest territorial setback India has faced since 1962, and accused it of pursuing "normalisation" with a hostile China because of its cowardice and misplaced economic priorities.- EndsTune InMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Rahul Gandhi#Supreme Court#Indian National Congress
