Intel is set to detail (PDF) the advantages of its 18A manufacturing technology (1.8nm-class) compared to its Intel 3 fabrication process at the upcoming VLSI Symposium 2025. As expected, the new production node will offer substantial benefits across power, performance, and area (PPA) metrics, thus providing tangible advantages both for client and data center products.
Intel claims that its 18A fabrication process delivers 25% more performance at the same voltage (1.1V) and complexity, as well as 36% lower power at the same frequency and voltage of 1.1V for a standard Arm core sub-block compared to the same block fabricated on Intel 3 process technology. At a lower voltage (0.75V), Intel 18A provides 18% higher performance and 38% lower power. In addition, 18A consistently achieves 0.72X area scaling compared to Intel 3.
Intel's 18A manufacturing technology is the company's first node to rely on gate-all-around (GAA) RibbonFET transistors and feature PowerVia backside power delivery network (BSPDN), two features that enable major PPA advantages.
The standard cell layout comparison highlights the significant physical scaling achieved by Intel 18A over Intel 3 in both High-Performance (HP) and High-Density (HD) libraries. Intel 18A reduces cell heights from 240CH to 180CH in HP libraries and from 210CH to 160CH in HD libraries, which represents a ~25% reduction in vertical dimension. This tighter cell architecture allows for increased transistor density, contributing directly to improved area efficiency.
The use of PowerVia BSPDN enables more efficient vertical routing by offloading power lines from the front side of ICs, freeing up space for signal routing and further compacting the layout. Additionally, refined gate, source/drain, and contact structures improve overall cell uniformity and integration density. These enhancements collectively enable Intel 18A to deliver better performance-per-area and energy efficiency, supporting more advanced and compact chip designs.
Intel is reportedly on track to start high-volume manufacturing of compute chiplets for its codenamed Panther Lake processors for client PCs later this year and then chiplets for Clearwater Forest data center systems in early 2026. In addition, the company is on track to tape out the first third-party designs on 18A in mid-2025.
Apparently, there is interest in developing third-party chips for Intel 18A. In addition to presenting a general paper describing its 18A technology, Intel plans to present a paper describing a PAM-4 transmitter implemented using 18A production node with a BSPDN that is co-authored by engineers from Intel, Alphawave Semi (a contract chip designer and IP provider), Apple, and Nvidia. This does not necessarily mean that Apple or Nvidia will use Intel's 18A for production silicon, but this at least means that they are interested in checking it out.
Speaking of Apple and Nvidia, TSMC said that virtually all of its partners plan to adopt its N2 (2nm-class) process technology, so it is reasonable to expect this node to be more widely used than Intel's 18A. Nonetheless, for Intel it is crucial to show that it can develop a competitive node and ramp it to high volume, so 18A will play a vital role for the future of Intel's foundry business.

Did iPadOS 26 just put Macs on notice? Apple exec says just ‘buy both'

If there's one moment during WWDC 2025 where there was the biggest crowd reaction, it was the introduction of iPadOS 26. Sitting in the audience at Apple's Cupertino headquarters, I couldn't help but notice the audible cheers that accompanied many of the features announced — especially those that blur the line between iPads and Macs. You see, as powerful as the best iPads are in terms of their Apple Silicon, a lot of users have avoided switching from a Mac to an iPad as their primary computer. But with iPadOS 26, a lot of those doubts have been erased. You now get a new windowing system that makes multitasking easier, Mac-like controls for closing and titling windows and even an honest to goodness menu bar. And that's just scratching the surface of what iPadOS can do now. I sat down with Apple's Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak (Joz) during WWDC to talk about what the new iPadOS 26 means for customers and how they should decide whether to get an iPad or a new MacBook. Spoiler alert: Joz says 'I recommend buying both.' Apple has made a bunch of attempts at multitasking on the iPad, from slide over and split view to Stage Manager, but they've received more criticism than praise. With iPadOS 26, you get a bonafide windowing system that makes working with multiple apps at once a lot easier. The iPad is the ultimate touch device you can hold in your hand. But at the same time, these two products can flex toward each other to a degree. Apps still open in full-screen by default, but there's a little grab bar in the bottom right corner. Swipe it diagonally and you'll be in windowed mode. You can also easily tile windows wherever you want, but Apple still respects that this is a touch-based interface. So you can flick a window to the left or right to have it take up that part of the screen. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'I've gotten some questions where people are saying, 'Gosh, did you, you know, the fourth time's the charm,' or something like, sort of, 'Where were you? Were you guys just sort of shooting in the dark?' And actually, this has been what I think of as a thoughtful evolution,' said Federighi. 'You have people hooking iPads up to external displays. You have people, many of us, using cases that are have track pads and keyboards. You have apps where people are doing many more productivity workflows. So iPad has changed. The hardware has changed. The interaction has changed.' And, yes, there are familiar controls for closing apps, maximizing windows and minimizing them — yup, with the three dots. So Apple was happy to borrow UI elements from the Mac to make iPadOS better. 'The iPad is the ultimate touch device you can hold in your hand. But at the same time, these two products can flex toward each other to a degree,' said Federighi. Now that iPadOS has many of the same features as the Mac, including a desktop-like Files app and a File menu, you might be wondering if you should go for an iPad or a new MacBook. And Apple maintains that these two devices remain quite distinct despite the growing similarities. Joz has a simple solution. 'I recommend buying both,' said Joswiak. 'Yeah, not even being facetious. I mean, the reality is, it has always been a little bit of a false trade-off to say it's one or the other. The reality is, it's a small number of people, the overlap [between iPad and Mac] is actually pretty huge. 'I recommend buying both. Yeah, not even being facetious. I mean, the reality is, it has always been a little bit of a false trade-off to say it's one or the other. 'We'd love you to buy both, but that's just the reality. People love to have both. You can use your Apple Pencil and do Procreate and do some incredible things on your iPad and then turn around and export it to the Mac and do some other stuff. They're both incredible tools, and they are very different from each other.' Okay, so what if you don't have a more than, say, $1,500 on a new computing device and you're deciding between a new iPad and a new MacBook? For Federighi, a car vs truck metaphor is an apt way to break down the differences between these two types of devices. The iPad is the sleeker Cooper Mini focused on portability, while the MacBook is the powerhouse F-150 of the two, ready to do heavy-duty tasks. 'I feel like we in the industry talk a lot about this, and customers don't seem to talk about it,' said Federighi. 'They actually seem to know which one they want. And you know it has not been a struggle for most of them.' But I'd argue that the versatility of iPadOS 26 will actually make the iPad vs Mac call a tougher one for shoppers. Not in a bad way, but there's only so many people who can afford both.

iOS 26 — Apple Unveils New Wallet Feature To Verify Your ID Online

Another new iOS 26 feature has emerged courtesy of Apple-focused site MacRumors — a Verify with ... More Wallet on the Web option. Apple's iOS 26 is shaping up to be a major update to the iPhone maker's operating system, with a bunch of cool new features announced on June 9 at its Worldwide Developer's Conference. Some people don't like the look of iOS 26, which comes with a new design language called Liquid Glass. However, iOS 26 looks like it will be very capable, with headline features including enhancements to Apple Intelligence AI features and the ability to screen calls and messages. Now, another new iOS 26 feature has emerged courtesy of Apple-focused site MacRumors — a Verify with Wallet on the Web option. This new iOS 26 feature works exactly in the way it sounds: You will be able to use your state-issued license or digital ID to verify your age and identity online in a secure way when doing things such as buying liquor or renting a car. In practice, this means you don't have to upload your photo ID such as your passport, which contains details such as your date of birth and name, to a website. Apple's iOS 26 feature can verify your identity instead and the iPhone maker will also inform you of how the data will be used and let you know if the information will be stored by the site. The whole process is protected by end-to-end encryption, the gold standard of security which means no one can see your data, including Apple, the website and the government. This capability is already possible in apps, but Apple is expanding it to the web through support for the W3C Digital Credentials API and the FIDO CTAP protocol, MacRumors explains. From iOS 26, the web-based ID verification feature will work in Safari across all your Apple devices, as well as in other browser apps and via operating systems that offer support. The Digital ID feature in iOS 26 allows you to store state issued IDs and licenses as well as passports to verify yourself online. Other features include the ability to scan a QR code on your iPhone and authenticate via Face ID to share your Digital Wallet information with a website. Meanwhile, Apple will add support for third party apps that support licenses. The Verify with Wallet on the Web feature in iOS 26 ensures you can't use fake IDs by ensuring they are cryptographically signed. The iPhone maker has announced the initial apps that will support Verify with Wallet on the Web, including Uber Eats, Turo and U.S. Bank. At the same time, Arizona MVD, Georgia DDS and Maryland MVA will add support for their digital ID apps, MacRumors says. Apple's iOS 26 will be available this Fall, when Apple launches its new iPhone devices.
