Intel details next-gen 18A fab tech: significantly more performance, lower power, higher density

Intel is set to detail (PDF) the advantages of its 18A manufacturing technology (1.8nm-class) compared to its Intel 3 fabrication process at the upcoming VLSI Symposium 2025. As expected, the new production node will offer substantial benefits across power, performance, and area (PPA) metrics, thus providing tangible advantages both for client and data center products.
Intel claims that its 18A fabrication process delivers 25% more performance at the same voltage (1.1V) and complexity, as well as 36% lower power at the same frequency and voltage of 1.1V for a standard Arm core sub-block compared to the same block fabricated on Intel 3 process technology. At a lower voltage (0.75V), Intel 18A provides 18% higher performance and 38% lower power. In addition, 18A consistently achieves 0.72X area scaling compared to Intel 3.
Intel's 18A manufacturing technology is the company's first node to rely on gate-all-around (GAA) RibbonFET transistors and feature PowerVia backside power delivery network (BSPDN), two features that enable major PPA advantages.
The standard cell layout comparison highlights the significant physical scaling achieved by Intel 18A over Intel 3 in both High-Performance (HP) and High-Density (HD) libraries. Intel 18A reduces cell heights from 240CH to 180CH in HP libraries and from 210CH to 160CH in HD libraries, which represents a ~25% reduction in vertical dimension. This tighter cell architecture allows for increased transistor density, contributing directly to improved area efficiency.
The use of PowerVia BSPDN enables more efficient vertical routing by offloading power lines from the front side of ICs, freeing up space for signal routing and further compacting the layout. Additionally, refined gate, source/drain, and contact structures improve overall cell uniformity and integration density. These enhancements collectively enable Intel 18A to deliver better performance-per-area and energy efficiency, supporting more advanced and compact chip designs.
Intel is reportedly on track to start high-volume manufacturing of compute chiplets for its codenamed Panther Lake processors for client PCs later this year and then chiplets for Clearwater Forest data center systems in early 2026. In addition, the company is on track to tape out the first third-party designs on 18A in mid-2025.
Apparently, there is interest in developing third-party chips for Intel 18A. In addition to presenting a general paper describing its 18A technology, Intel plans to present a paper describing a PAM-4 transmitter implemented using 18A production node with a BSPDN that is co-authored by engineers from Intel, Alphawave Semi (a contract chip designer and IP provider), Apple, and Nvidia. This does not necessarily mean that Apple or Nvidia will use Intel's 18A for production silicon, but this at least means that they are interested in checking it out.
Speaking of Apple and Nvidia, TSMC said that virtually all of its partners plan to adopt its N2 (2nm-class) process technology, so it is reasonable to expect this node to be more widely used than Intel's 18A. Nonetheless, for Intel it is crucial to show that it can develop a competitive node and ramp it to high volume, so 18A will play a vital role for the future of Intel's foundry business.

The UK's financial regulator is to allow banks and other City firms to experiment with the US chipmaker Nvidia's leading AI products to 'speed up innovation' and fulfil government orders to boost UK growth. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said it was launching a 'supercharged sandbox' that would give successful applicants the chance to experiment safely with cutting-edge AI under the watchdog's supervision, allowing them to use Nvidia's accelerated computing products. The regulator is not dictating what those experiments might be, but some firms have previously suggested that AI could be used to identify and intercept authorised push payment fraud, in which victims are tricked into sending money to criminals' bank accounts, or help identify stock market manipulation. We'll help firms harness AI to benefit our markets and consumers, while supporting economic growth.' The AI sandbox programme is open to applications, with plans to begin operating in October, nearly a year after the chancellor, Rachel Reeves, ordered the FCA to encourage more risk-taking across the City to help spur growth and competitiveness. The government has been heaping pressure on UK watchdogs to do more to support the economy, amid accusations that red tape has been a barrier to business and inward investment. The FCA's focus on AI comes despite fears that the technology could lead to job losses across a swathe of sectors, including financial services, unless the government implements proper controls. The move chimes, however, with Keir Starmer's calls in January for a huge rollout of AI, including 'sector champions' that could drive Britain's role in developing and deploying AI. The collaboration with Nvidia will be hailed by enthusiasts of the new technology. The Silicon Valley company, founded in 1993, has been the engine of the AI market boom, with hype around the technology propelling the firm's valuation to more than $3tn (£2.2tn). Nvidia's head of financial technology for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Jochen Papenbrock, said: 'AI is fundamentally reshaping the financial sector by automating processes, enhancing data analysis, and improving decision-making, which leads to greater efficiency, accuracy, and risk management across a wide range of financial activities. 'The FCA's supercharged sandbox provides firms with a secure environment to explore AI innovations using Nvidia's full-stack accelerated computing platform, supporting industry-wide growth and efficiency.' The forces urging you to update to Windows 11 are growing — but are things as dire as they appear?

We've been singing the requiem of Windows 10 for quite some time now. This past March, Asus published a blog post that makes one thing clear: You should update to Windows 11. "With a mandatory Windows update on the horizon, there are essential steps you should take to ensure a smooth upgrade experience." That same month, Microsoft updated its Windows 11 system requirements (as reported by Neowin, the Microsoft-focused tech news site). Those updated requirements are to support Windows 11 24H2, which will enable the generative AI tool Microsoft Copilot+. AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm now all make silicon that supports Copilot+. All of which is to say: The forces urging you to update to Windows 11 are growing — but are things as dire as they appear? Microsoft's end of support for most versions of Windows 10 means the operating system won't get any feature updates, technical support, or security updates. That doesn't mean the operating system will just stop working, but it will put systems running Windows 10 at higher risk for viruses and malware than systems upgraded to Windows 11. Laptop Mag has examined several workarounds for the End of Windows 10, but they all have steep disadvantages. So, should you just bite the bullet and upgrade to Windows 11? Let's recap a bit. There are currently several ways to stay on Windows 10 past October 14, including Microsoft's own Extended Support Updates program and Windows 10 Long-Term Service Channel, which can offer full security updates until 2032. While both the ESU and LTSC options will let you keep running Windows 10, both options come at a price, fiscally and in terms of stripped-down features. So they may not be the most attractive solution. Alternatively, you could switch to Linux and enjoy all the perks of an open-source operating system while learning a lot about translation layers and software emulation to get some of your favorite applications running. However, Linux is a lighter-weight operating system that can help keep older hardware running smoothly. So it's a worthwhile option if your current laptop or desktop is rocking hardware too old to meet the stringent Windows 11 upgrade requirements. If you don't like the idea of having to custom-bootstrap your operating system into working the way you need it to, that's fair. While there are certainly reasons why Linux has a dedicated following, the operating system isn't quite as easy to use out of the box compared to Windows or macOS. This brings us back to either keeping your version of Windows 10 limping along or caving to the Windows 11 update, which, honestly, may not be as big a deal as the hype suggests. Look, all software eventually becomes old and outdated and gets replaced by a new version. That's just the tech lifecycle. While Windows 11 is not a perfect operating system, it's pretty easy to use and set up out of the box. It looks more Apple-y than Windows 10, but all your necessary Windows 10 features made the jump, though some have found new homes. But it doesn't take long to get oriented with the new operating system. You can also opt out of or uninstall any Microsoft programs you don't want to tangle with, like OneDrive or the controversial Recall system on Copilot+ PCs. And you never need to use the Copilot chatbot if you don't want to. The problem most have with Windows 11 is the strict hardware requirements. You need a GPU capable of running Microsoft's DirectX 12 API and a CPU that runs at 1GHz or faster, with more than two cores, and compatible with a 64-bit operating system. This essentially means you need an Intel chip that's newer than the 10th generation or an AMD processor that's newer than the 3000 generation. Our Review: ★★★★½View Deal Given the Windows 11 hardware requirements, a lot of folks will need newer hardware to upgrade. However, the CPU requirements only really make an impact on hardware that's five to seven years old. While that's not a great look for Microsoft, that older hardware has aged past the usual tech hardware upgrade cycle of about four years. So maybe you just need a new laptop or desktop, and you've been putting it off for too long. Even if you don't want all the AI features of a Copilot+ PC, plenty of non-AI options would still get you all the benefits of Windows 11 without the hassle of trying to hold on to Windows 10 for another decade. Plus, there are rumors that Windows 12 is around the corner. So maybe this whole discussion will be redundant in a few months, anyway.
