Trisha Yearwood revealed that a throwaway comment some 40 years ago derailed her songwriting aspirations
She said on the TODAY show that "some guy" told her she was "a good singer, but you're not really a writer" when she was 19
The Mirror, her first album of songs she co-wrote, is out in JulyIt's been more than 40 years since Trisha Yearwood's songwriting aspirations were derailed by a single throwaway comment — but now, she's making up for lost time.
The country star, 60, is set to release her latest album The Mirror in July, and the record marks the first of her career that she's co-written herself.
In an appearance on the TODAY show on Friday, May 16, Yearwood explained that she'd long avoided writing songs of her own because 'some guy' once told her in college she was not a songwriter.
'Bless his heart. I'm sure he probably wouldn't even remember ever saying it, but… I was 19 years old. And I gave him a bunch of poetry. Everybody in Nashville's writing. I was in college,' recalled the star, who graduated from Belmont University. 'He just said, 'Yeah, you're a good singer, but you're not really a writer.' And I just let it be the truth for 40 years.'
Yearwood said she finally gained some new perspective upon turning 60 in September.
'I had this kind of 'a ha' moment. I turned 60 last year, and I highly recommend it. Everything sort of opened up,' she said. 'I just thought, 'That doesn't have to be the truth about me just because somebody says it.' And I started writing for me.'
The 'She's in Love with the Boy' singer told hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Erin Andrews that she 'didn't ever intend' to make a record, but the more she wrote, the more confidence she gained in her abilities.
'People in my life said, 'You should make a record of this,' and so here we are. It's crazy,' she said. 'For the last 30 years I could always go, 'That's a really personal song, but I didn't write it, so it's not about me.' And now everything has a little piece of me in it.'
She continued, 'I always felt like as an artist, I chose songs that I made mine. They were mine when I was done with them. But it's just another layer when you actually have a hand in writing the song.'
The Mirror is set for release on July 18, and Yearwood has so far released the songs 'The Wall or the Way Over' and 'Bringing the Angels.'
She teased 'Bringing the Angels' in an Instagram post on May 9, revealing she wrote the track with her sister Beth Bernard, plus Bridgette Tatum and Leslie Satcher.
"They told me I wasn't a songwriter, so I turned around and co-wrote a whole album,' she captioned the post.
Yearwood has co-written a pair of songs over the years with her husband Garth Brooks, whom she married in 2005. They co-wrote the song 'For the Last Time' on her 2019 album Let's Be Frank, and they also share credits on 'What I'm Thankful for (The Thanksgiving Song),' off their joint 2016 holiday record.

60-Year-Old Model's Real Body Photos Go Viral

Paulina Porizkova, the Czech supermodel who became one of the most recognizable faces throughout the '80s and '90s, is going viral for her honest take on aging. For her 60th birthday, Porizkova posted side-by-side images on Instagram of her body at 60. In the first, she's kneeling on a beach cabana in a bikini. The caption reads: "This is me. Vacation, pretty light, posing for a shot." In the second, she stands for a casual selfie in her bathroom at home. "This is also me. Home, not great light, not posing," she wrote. Alongside the images, she reflected on what 60 means to her, writing, "This is 60. This is 60 years of sometimes healthy eating, sometimes not. 60 years of sometimes working out, sometimes not. 60 years of doing the right things followed by doing the wrong things and over again and again. It's 60 years of learning of what works and what doesn't. And just as I think I've figured it out, everything changes and I have to start again." She ended, "The beauty of 60 is that now I understand the importance is IN the lesson, not passing the exam." In a world where beauty standards keep getting more extreme, and social media often favors faces that look decades younger than they are, many have found it refreshing to see a supermodel be candid about aging. The comments quickly flooded with gratitude and personal stories. One person wrote: "Thank you for sharing and being real. I often see images of women on here going 'this is' and then whatever age they are but it's ALWAYS a super flattering photo not ever the realness of our ageing bodies. How are we ever going to accept ourselves if we're not seeing ourselves ✌🏽🧡🦋." Others shared their own struggles and the freedom that comes with letting go of perfection: "Looking gorgeous, as always, Paulina. I'm 64 and while I still hate my stomach—no matter how light the numbers on the scale read, it makes me sad—but with my sixties came this wonderful sense of 'f*ck it all,' and I keep on going." Many said her post helped them feel less alone. "THANK YOU - turning 60 this year and was feeling bad about myself but now I see I am totally normal - actually feel great now - THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS - so important for real women to see real women," one wrote. "Love you for showing that you are bit normal and that makes me feel better about myself 💕," another added. "Thank you for being REAL," this person said. In a interview back in January with TODAY, Paulina reflected on her career, her new partnership with Estée Lauder, and her life now — sharing how she hopes to use her platform to shift the conversation around aging and beauty. "I'm almost 60! I'm almost two months to 60 and I have never been so thrilled about a birthday in my life," she said. She continued, "I feel like I've paid my dues. I've raised the children, had the family, I've been the wife, I've done everything society expected of me. And you know what? It's my turn." When asked how she challenges the stigma around aging, Paulina replied, "We're so scared of wrinkles, have you noticed that? We are so terrified of wrinkles because I suppose wrinkles make us no longer relevant, no longer sexy, no longer desirable, and as women, that has been sort of our calling card." Yet, she added, "I keep looking at wrinkles, mine, yours, any woman that I see, and I think, 'It's your map of life. I see how you are as a person.'" "Why do we make wrinkles on the same par as acne?" she went on. "You know, those are the two things that people go to the dermatologist for, is acne and wrinkles. Acne is a disease, and wrinkles are the signs of privilege that you are alive. Why eliminate, why not embrace them? And I understand why, because society tells us that they don't want us once we become wrinkled." Since that interview — and outside of her birthday post — Paulina has continued to share photos and posts that challenge expectations of what aging "should" look like. In one post, she shared a photo of herself with what she called "an unfortunate angle and seriously unflattering light" to challenge the unrealistic standards and expectations on the app. "In selecting my photos for IG, I almost unconsciously gravitate to pictures where I look best — as in youngest. Least wrinkled, least saggy. So, in the last year or so I'm consciously choosing some that I would have never posted before," she wrote in the caption. In an online world that feeds me — a 27-year-old — consistent applause for face-lifts, advice on the "best" time to start preventative Botox, tips for hiding fine lines "before it's too late," and constant pressure to filter, Facetune, and alter my appearance to meet impossible standards, seeing an older woman embrace a natural process feels refreshing. We're taught to fear aging as early as children, so Paulina's openness is a perspective I think we need more of. Of course, Paulina is a supermodel, so I think the message is easier to swallow for some (would we be as accepting if she weren't already considered beautiful?). Still, I'm grateful to see even a hint of change. But what do you think? Let me know in the comments.

Brandon Blackstock's cause of death revealed, confirming details about cancer battle

Talent agent Brandon Blackstock, who was the ex-husband of pop star Kelly Clarkson and the father of their two children, died Thursday after losing his battle with melanoma. Butte-Silver Bow County coroner Dan Hollis confirmed Blackstock's cause of death to The Times on Monday. He also confirmed that Blackstone died at his home in Montana under hospice care and surrounded by his family, as first reported by People. The coroner said Blackstock's manner of death was natural causes. The official cause of death clarifies information shared by Blackstock's family, who announced his death last week in a statement shared with The Times and on social media. Blackstock 'bravely battled cancer for more than three years,' the statement said, not giving specifics. Melanoma is a kind of skin cancer that first affects cells that help produce pigment for skin color, according to the Mayo Clinic. Blackstock's family announced his death shortly after Clarkson postponed four August shows in her Studio Sessions residency in Las Vegas for personal reasons. She wrote in an Instagram post that 'this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them.' Clarkson and Blackstock married in 2013 and split in 2020, finalizing their divorce in 2022. They share a daughter and a son. Blackstock also had two children from his first marriage. Since her ex-husband's death, footage of Clarkson wiping away tears during a July 26 show in Las Vegas resurfaced on social media. In the video, the 'American Idol' alumna reflects on the changes she had on her song 'Piece by Piece,' which she first wrote about Blackstock. As she tells her audience about rewriting a more mature version of the number she turns away, seemingly overcome with emotion. 'I'm really trying to pull it together,' Clarkson says, later wiping her eyes as fans cheer. 'Screw it, let's just sing it. This is 'Piece by Piece,'' she says, carrying on. It's unclear when Clarkson will make up the postponed August shows, but she has several performances scheduled for November, according to her website. The 18-show residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace was announced in February and kicked off on the Fourth of July.

World's ugliest dog crowned — see why a ‘gentle soul' bulldog named Petunia was tops: ‘Unique beauty'

This dog is a little ruff around the edges. A hairless English-French bulldog mix was crowned as the winner of the 2025 'World's Ugliest Dog' contest. In addition to the cash prize, Petunia will also be featured on limited-edition cans of Mug Root Beer, one of the sponsors of the canine event, and will appear on the 'TODAY' show on Aug. 11, the New York Times reported. And her looks are described as '… a mix between Yoda, she's a mix between a hippo, a bat — she's got it all,' NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz said on TODAY. 'The annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest is not about making fun of 'ugly' dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful!' the site said. 5 Jinny Lu, a 5-year-old pug who was rescued from Korea, won second place and a spirit award. 'The contest speaks to the importance of advocating for the adoration of all animals and the benefits of adopting.' In this competition, the unique features of some pups, such as wild fur, missing teeth, dangling tongues and wandering eyes are badges of honor to wear proudly. 5 Little Prince Wonder, an 8-year-old Chinese Crested, competed in the World's Ugliest Dog Contest. Wild Thang survived distemper as a puppy and his teeth didn't grow in properly, which caused his silly tongue — a feature he was known and loved for. One of his front legs also constantly paddles around.
