Dumped trolleys blight streets, say Peterborough councillors
Richard Stangward, Labour councillor for Bretton, echoed her frustration."We are also seeing people piling bags of rubbish into the trolleys and then leaving them in public areas," he said."You could go to different areas of Bretton and will definitely find one."Stangward acknowledged the city council's FixMyStreet app was generally effective and encouraged residents to report issues."The app usually gets them gone within 48 hours of reporting, but they are so busy all the time," he said."Bretton is a good area but things like this drag it down."
Abandoned trolleys have also been reported in Werrington, Westwood, and parts of Ravensthorpe.The council said it used the app Trolleywise to report them."If they are not listed as ones that they support, we will endeavour to return them if the shop is identifiable and local," a council spokesperson said.Some retailers have attempted measures to prevent trolleys being taken off-site.Tesco, for example, requires customers to insert a £1 coin to release a trolley.But Knight said people were finding "a way around it.""They are using buttons or even smaller coins to access them instead," she said.She said one Orton shop, QD, was attaching clothing security tags to its trolleys in a bid to tackle the issue."If anyone takes them out of the shop, an alarm goes off. A staff member has to push the trolley for you to the car," she said."We need to do something. They make our streets look neglected but also pose a hazard when left on pavements, especially for those using mobility scooters."

Three men have been jailed for their parts in a sophisticated conspiracy to steal luxury Land Rovers and Range Rovers worth more than £500,000 in Milius, 28, Mindaugas Savickas, 34, and Kornelijus Girdeika, 26, from Peterborough, had all admitted conspiracy to steal and were jailed after a crown court hearing in Huntingdon, said their haul included 16 Range Rovers and two Land Rover Discoverys, stolen from driveways in Peterborough, St Neots, Little Paxton, Alconbury Weald, Folksworth, Glinton, Ailsworth, Helpston and Skegness, in the early hours of the said Milius, from Lithuania, had twice breached deportation orders. Savickas accepted responsibility for four thefts and Girdeika for eight, the judge was for the pair said they had played lesser judge said evidence showed that both had been looking for "easy cash", but had both had played "significant roles".Milius, of Overland Mews, was jailed for four years and five months; Savickas, of Dogsthorpe Road, for two years and nine months; and Girdeika, of Arkwright Way, for two years and eight months. Pc Craig Trevor added: "This gang conducted a sophisticated operation as they stole high performance vehicles with little thought for the impact their actions were having on others."He said Jaguar Land Rover had "rolled out security updates" to help protect vehicles from the "tactics used in this case". Paedophile from Peterborough lied on Instagram to groom girl
A "predatory" convicted paedophile abused a 14-year-old after setting up a fake Instagram account and pretending to be a teenager, a court has Fox, 43, set up the profile under a pseudonym to "try to ensnare young girls" to groom, Judge Philip Grey told Cambridge Crown messages were intercepted by the victim's parents around the same time he began sending sexual material, including child him "every parent's worst nightmare", Judge Grey jailed Fox for nine and a half years, with an extended five years on licence. Trail of devastation Police linked Fox to the account through a top up mobile phone, and he was victim's mother said "this man has taken away her innocence" and "brought sexual violence and abuse into her life".Judge Grey said the girl and her parents "bear no blame whatsoever for what happened".He told Fox he had left a "trail of devastation just so you could get your kicks".Fox, he said, had a "plan to corrupt and sexually abuse her online".Mitigating, Sophie Clifford said Fox was "deeply remorseful", and claimed "he feels like he is a teenager in the wrong body". Ms Clifford told the court Fox said: "Once I get less supervision and support I start spiralling and reoffending."However, Judge Grey said "your regret, in my judgement, was you were caught".Fox has previous convictions for 15 child sexual abuse offences and had last been released from prison in May 2023.
