Montemurro named new Australia women's football coach

Montemurro named new Australia women's football coach Montemurro's appointment ends a 10-month search for the Matildas. File photo: AFP Joe Montemurro has been appointed as head coach of the Australia women's team, returning home after a successful decade in Europe with Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon. The 55-year-old, who steered French powerhouses Lyon to their fourth consecutive women's league title last month, said it was "the honour of a lifetime". "This team means so much to so many Australians, and I'm humbled by the opportunity to help shape its next chapter," he said. "I've followed their incredible journey closely and am energised by the passion, resilience, and identity they've built." The Matildas captivated the nation and won legions of new fans with their run to the last four of the World Cup on home soil in 2023. But an underwhelming Paris Olympics last year saw Tony Gustavsson depart and they have been without a permanent head coach since. Tom Sermanni, a 70-year-old Scot, has been in temporary charge during a protracted recruitment process, with the side sliding to 16th in the world. "Joe brings world-class experience, a deep understanding of the Australian football landscape, and a genuine connection to our national identity," said Football Australia interim chief Heather Garriock. "Importantly, he has spent the last decade coaching at the very highest levels of the women's game in Europe and brings with him an unparalleled understanding of what is required to compete and succeed at the top of modern football," she added. Montemurro, who won trophies with women's teams at Lyon, Juventus, Arsenal and Melbourne City, will lead the Matildas to the Asian Cup on home soil next year, then through qualifying for the 2027 Women's World Cup. Deadlier games, shocking twists in new Squid Game season 3 trailer released by Netflix

Netflix has released its official teaser trailer for season 3 of its global hit series Squid Game, intensifying fan anticipation ahead of its June 27 premiere. Advertisement The upcoming season continues the story of Gi-hun ( Lee Jung-jae ), who re-enters the deadly competition with a personal motive but ends up losing his closest friend. The narrative also follows the enigmatic Front Man ( Lee Byung-hun ), who infiltrated the game in disguise, and the final fates of the remaining players who have endured the gruesome contest. The trailer, released to coincide with a Netflix fan event in Los Angeles at the weekend , opens with an eerie rendition of a familiar Korean children's song, 'Knock Knock, Who's There? It's a Kid', setting a sinister tone. It then cuts to the terrifying sight of Young-hee, the iconic giant animatronic doll, now joined by a towering new version clad in floral tights, as frightened contestants brace for the next challenge. The unsettling transformation of childlike elements into tools of horror remains a signature of the franchise . Gi-hun's anguished outburst – 'Why didn't you just kill me? Why was I the only one spared?' – reveals the survivor's guilt he harbours after returning alone from a failed rebellion that claimed the life of his friend Deok-su (Lee Seo-hwan). Advertisement

Netflix trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein with Oscar Isaac wows fans

Even as Netflix teased the long-awaited final seasons of Stranger Things and Squid Game, fans appeared to be also transfixed by the trailer of the streaming platform's upcoming Guillermo del Toro film Frankenstein. Advertisement Watched some 3 million times on YouTube within hours of its release at the weekend, the trailer prompted much excitement among fans, but also some fears that the adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel might not get a cinematic release. 'My jaw was on the floor the entire time. It's chillingly gorgeous, can't wait for this one,' one person commented. ' Guillermo Del Toro is too good for Netflix. This needs a theatre release asap,' another wrote. The scientist Dr Frankenstein is played by Oscar Isaac, while his creature made up of corpse parts is embodied by Saltburn star Jacob Elordi. The trailer suggests that the Mexican director is interested in both powerful imagery and telling an emotional, intimate story. 'Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts Mary Shelley's classic tale of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment that ultimately leads to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation,' Netflix writes.
