A former Downton Abbey heartthrob, known for his sharp suits and love of racing cars, is about to swap the aristocratic charm for a grittier persona in an upcoming Netflix series.
Available to stream from Friday, Dept Q tells the grim tale of a detective grappling with PTSD while unravelling unsolved mysteries from a gloomy basement office.
Matthew Goode, who charmed audiences as the debonair Henry Talbot, Lady Mary Crawley's (portrayed by Michelle Dockery) on-screen husband in Downton Abbey, tackles the lead role of Carl Morck.
He passed up the chance to be part of the third Downton film due to clashes with shooting for Dept Q, but later expressed relief to Radio Times at hanging up Henry's attire.

He said: "Let's face it, he was edging towards becoming a bit of a wet lettuce!" Years on, Goode's rugged look and beard for the new gig are so transformative that even his die-hard followers might do a double-take spotting him.
The English actor's versatility extends beyond the UK shores – he's made significant impressions in Hollywood as well.
For example, he captivated viewers in The Crown where he took on the role of the dashing Antony Armstrong-Jones, portraying the 1st Earl of Snowdon in the show's second season.
His portrayal garnered him an Emmy Award nomination, earning accolades in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category, reports the Express.

Several years ago, he even dipped his toes into the vampire fantasy genre with a role in A Discovery of Witches.
He also starred alongside renowned US pop sensation Mandy Moore in Chasing Liberty, where he embodied a British spy safeguarding a runaway First Daughter from impending danger.
Whilst he may not be Hollywood's most recognised name to date, he certainly made an impression acting alongside Brad Pitt in the war thriller Allied.
Matthew has evidently journeyed far since his acting debut in the 2002 TV film Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister.
Fast forward 23 years, and he's now delving into the gripping Dept Q series, based on the original series by best-selling Danish crime author Jussi Adler-Olsen, who boasts over 27 million book sales to his name.
Fans might struggle to recognise him now sporting a tousled beard - but they're bound to appreciate his acting prowess as they gradually adjust to this new look.

Netflix fans rush to binge Italian crime thriller with John Wick star

Netflix viewers are racing through all six episodes of the gritty new Italian thriller, Sara: Woman In The Shadows. The recently added show, directed by Carmine Elia, stars Teresa Saponangelo and Claudia Gerini, the latter of whom is known for playing Gianna D'Antonio in John Wick: Chapter 2. 'The suspicious death of her son pushes a former secret agent [the titular Sara played by Teresa] back into action, investigating a series of crimes that grow increasingly sinister,' the synopsis of the series, based on the crime novel series by Maurizio de Giovanni, reads. Sara's last job dubbed her 'the invisible woman' for her immaculate skill set and ability to lip-read and she brings her all to this latest mystery – to uncover what happened to her son. The description concludes: 'While discovering details of her son's life that she knew almost nothing about, Sara sinks into an investigation that brings her back to many ghosts of her past. 'Keeping both of these things together is very difficult, and certainly very dangerous. Paradoxically however, this is how the invisible woman comes back to life, doing what she does best.' In the show Claudia's character, Teresa, teams up with Sara to help with her investigation and they are also joined by police officer Pardo (Flavio Furno) and photographer Viola (Chiara Celotto). Its premise has clearly hooked in fans with the show easily climbing the charts to land at number seven in TV shows on Netflix. One Reddit user, Roshankr1994, called it a 'gritty thriller and an intriguing watch.' 'The ending of 'Sara – Woman in the Shadows' leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. The twist is both shocking and brilliantly executed, tying up loose ends while leaving room for reflection on Sara's journey. A must-watch for crime drama enthusiasts!' TheAnchorAgent wrote on X. Ready Steady Cut added: 'This is six dense episodes of grounded and compelling procedural spycraft enhanced by an unconventional lead and a willingness to meet its underlying themes and ideas halfway.' Netflix has a strong record of platforming compelling foreign-language thrillers, including the Swedish show The Are Murders, South African drama Unseen and Korean series Karma – to name a few. Gerini has enjoyed a lucrative career with over 100 roles across TV and film and in 2023, reflected on the ongoing legacy of her John Wick character. 'That was a very interesting shoot. We shot in Rome and I really like Chad, and of course Keanu Reeves. More Trending 'I took that role with an audition as a self tape and I was so proud of myself because when you do a self tape you never know how it's going to be. And the director said, 'oh my God, you really impressed me. 'I really like this character, this strong woman, yet fragile. You always have to play against the main characteristic of the role. Sometimes that's what I do. 'I like to play, yes, a strong woman, but with the courage to take her own life. Go out on her terms. To not be killed by John Wick,' she told The HollywoodNews at the time. View More » Sara: Woman In The Shadows is available to stream now. Got a story? Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins on ‘ridiculous' feud rumours

The third series sees the positive Chelsea, played by British actress Wood, 31, try to keep her mysterious older boyfriend, Rick, played by 53-year-old US actor Goggins, calm in Thailand. Walton Goggins. (Ian West/PA) Following the 2025 series, Goggins appeared to step away from his fellow co-stars, and unfollow Greater Manchester-born Wood on Instagram. They both addressed the swirling rumours during a joint interview for US publication Variety, which was published on Wednesday. Goggins said: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman (Aimee) madly, and she is so important to me.' He added that 'she's special', and explained he had not addressed the reports before as he did not want to talk about Wood when she was not there. 'I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a shite about Instagram,' Wood said. Goggins said that when he finished The White Lotus he 'needed to just back away from everyone', as it is his 'process' when filming a project ends. 'It's all so ridiculous,' he said. 'It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f****** ever.' Wood previously criticised a Saturday Night Live sketch, with an cast member impersonating her with exaggerated prosthetic teeth, calling it 'mean and unfunny' on Instagram. She told Variety that it 'felt misogynistic. It felt like the punchline was a woman's appearance, which is just not funny. It's not cool'. Goggins shared the same sketch online and praised Jon Hamm for playing a version of his character, before deleting the Instagram post, ahead of hosting SNL> He said he was 'gonna say it (something) to your face', and added: 'I don't use social media in any way, and I'm not a mean guy.' SNL apologised for the April sketch, according to Wood, and the comedian and cast member who impersonated her, Sarah Sherman, sent her flowers to apologise. Wood is also known for Netflix teen show Sex Education, BBC comedy Daddy Issues and the 2022 drama film Living with Bill Nighy. Goggins has been in Western series Justified, post-apocalyptic series Fallout, and drama Sons Of Anarchy. He has had two Emmy nods, while Wood has won a TV Bafta for Sex Education and been given a Rising Star Bafta nomination.

Adolescence continues to make records months after Netflix release

The UK crime drama miniseries Adolescence, co-created by and starring Stephen Graham, has surpassed Stranger Things to become Netflix 's second most-watched English-language TV series, with 141.2 million views since its debut on March 13. Adolescence recently won Breakthrough Limited Series and acting awards for Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards. The four-part series Adolescence follows the aftermath of a 13-year-old boy's arrest for murdering a classmate, with each episode filmed in one take. Director Philip Barantini told The Independent that shooting each episode in one take was challenging but meticulously planned, requiring collaboration from the sound team, ADs, and runners. The Independent's Nick Hilton described Adolescence as "harrowing but compelling," praising its rawness and ability to unravel a moral knot.
