Guardians aren't interested in change after President Trump calls for them, Commanders to go back to old offensive nicknames
Trump made a long post on Truth Social on Sunday calling for both the Guardians and the NFL's Washington Commanders to revert back to their old team names. He even threatened to block the Commanders' impending move back to D.C. and their new stadium if they failed to do so.
While not mentioning Trump by name, Guardians president Chris Antonetti made it clear they aren't interested in moving backward on Sunday.
'I understand there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago, but it's a decision we made and we've gotten the opportunity to build the brand as the Guardians over the last four years and we're excited about the future that's in front of us,' he said, via The Athletic.
The Commanders have not addressed Trump's post.
The Guardians officially changed their team name ahead of the 2022 season, shortly after they stopped using the old 'Chief Wahoo' logo, which many saw as racist and offensive toward Native Americans. The Commanders retired their old 'Redskins' nickname in 2020. They went by the Washington Football Team briefly before landing on the Commanders. Their old nickname, which had been in use since 1933, was widely seen as an offensive slur and drew plenty of criticism in its final years of use. 'For obvious reasons,' Commanders owner Josh Harris said in August, that can't return.
'I think [Commanders] is now embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff,' he said earlier this year, via ESPN. 'So we're going with that.'
Though it's unclear if the threat of blocking their stadium deal, real or not, will sway the Commanders, both Harris and Antonetti seem very content with their franchises' new names.

Denny Hamlin adds contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing to celebratory week after win at Dover
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has signed a multiyear contract extension with Joe Gibbs Racing, the team said Friday. Details of the contract were not announced. The deal comes during the same week in which the driver of the No. 11 car won in Dover for his 58th career Cup victory. He ranks 11th all-time in career victories, a resume that includes three Daytona 500 wins, three Southern 500 wins and one Coca-Cola 600. Hamlin will try to win his fourth crown jewel race in Sunday's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 'Joe and everyone at JGR are family to me and have done so much for me over the last 20 years,' Hamlin said. 'We've had a solid start to this season and we have been able to welcome some great new partners this year, so there are a lot of exciting things happening with our team not only now, but also into the future.' Hamlin ranks fourth in this season's points. He's made all 706 of his Cup starts with JGR and is the longest tenured driver in team history. He also has 244 top-five finishes, 369 top-10s and has won the pole 44 times. 'I really appreciate Denny and everything he has meant to our organization,' Gibbs said. 'It is just really special when you think about everything we've experienced over the past 20 years, from that first moment when J.D. (Gibbs) recognized his talent at a test session, until now. It is remarkable in any sport to compete at the level Denny has for this long and we are thrilled he has been able to spend his entire career with us.' Hamlin and NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan also are co-owners of NASCAR's 23XI Racing team, which is embroiled in a court battle to retain their charter in the series. Last week, U.S. District Judge Kenneth Bell denied a request from Front Row Motorsports and 23XI Racing for a temporary restraining order to prevent Cup officials from revoking their charters. That means the six cars owned by those teams will race as open entries this weekend and perhaps longer. Hamlin's team fields three drivers — Bubba Wallace, Riley Herbst and Tyler Reddick. ___ AP auto racing: Michael Marot, The Associated Press

People Are Losing It Over Fed Chair Jerome Powell's Facial Expressions During This Awkward Trump Interview
Donald Trump visited Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at the Fed's headquarters renovation site on Thursday. In case you haven't been following the (reality) show, Trump has been VERY upset with the Fed Chair for not lowering interest rates. He won't stop talking about firing him. Related: So, needless to say, tensions were a bit high! At the construction site, Trump took out a piece of paper claiming the cost of the Federal Reserve's renovation project had surged to $3.1 billion, compared with the Fed's official figure of $2.5 billion. Powell called him out on it, and that awkward interaction and live fact-check is going viral: CNN/kaitlancollins/Twitter: @kaitlancollins "It's about $3.1 billion now — it went up a little bit, or maybe a lot. It was $2.7 billion, and now it's $3.1," Trump said. "I'm not aware of that," Powell replied. "It just came out," Trump responded. "I haven't heard that from anyone at the Fed," Powell added. Then Trump takes out a piece of paper, Powell grabs it, and starts reading it. Related: "Are you including the Martin renovation? You just added in a third building," Powell says. Trump replies, "It's a building that's being built." Then Powell clarifies, "It was built five years ago. We finished Martin five years ago." Then Trump changes the subject and starts talking about how nice it is to take the helmets off. Yeah, that was awk! Their exchange is everywhere. Related: People can't believe it's real... even though crazy shit like this happens all of the time lately. It's being called a "comedy skit." And everyone won't stop talking about Powell's facial expressions. Other people are celebrating Powell for actually saying something to Trump's face. "Jerome Powell did more to fact check trump's lies in 60 seconds than the entire White House press corp did in 6 months." And then there are the memes, because of course: Related: And lastly: Just another day in the Trump White House, I guess!! Also in Celebrity: Also in Celebrity: Also in Celebrity:

Packers CB Nate Hobbs' versatility is already showing at training camp
The Green Bay Packers knew they were getting a versatile player when they signed former Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million deal this offseason. According to Albert Breer of the Packers' personnel department had been eyeing Hobbs for a couple of years, believing he could be an outside corner. So far in camp, that's exactly where he's been spending most of his time. "Yeah, he's done a great job. You can really see the guy's a competitor, and that's why we loved him on tape," head coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday. "He's tough, and he was primarily a nickel with the Raiders, so it's been pretty cool to watch him come in and play a lot more outside corner, but also, we know what he can do if we want to put him inside." Just two days into training camp, Hobbs has already made a pair of standout plays. On Day 1, Jordan Love dropped a dime to running back Josh Jacobs in the end zone, but Hobbs made a nice play on the ball to break it up. Then, on Thursday, Love was able to draw Hobbs offside to turn a 3rd-and-7 into a 3rd-and-2. Trying to make up for the mistake and get the defense off the field, Hobbs got a good jump on a pass intended for Dontayvion Wicks. Hobbs made a diving interception but had to settle for the pass breakup. "I should've caught it," Hobbs said, shaking his head. "That's all—get my hands on the ball, keep it on the ball." Even though it wasn't a turnover, those are the types of plays the Packers hope Hobbs will make during the regular season to help fill the void of losing Jaire Alexander. In 51 games across four seasons with the Raiders, Hobbs picked off three passes and broke up another 19. He also missed 16 games due to various injuries, preventing him from being the best version of himself. "Just being real, I haven't gotten the most out of myself that I want. I haven't fulfilled my expectations for myself, and that's a me thing," Hobbs said. "Injuries play a part, but that's all mental. You are who you think you are. You're always right about yourself, whether you think that you are or you're not." A key component to unlocking Hobbs' potential could be moving him around the secondary based on matchups. The Packers know what Hobbs is capable of in the slot and are in the process of learning more about what he can do on the outside. "I feel like (my versatility) will free up (Jeff Hafley) on the play calling, and I feel like it'll bring confidence to guys wherever I'm at, whether I'm at nickel or corner," he said. "I'm going to bring energy, I'm going to run to the ball and make plays." This article originally appeared on Packers Wire: Packers CB Nate Hobbs' versatility is already showing at training camp
