Fears Carry On will be censored as Ofcom faces pleas over extinction concerns

Daily Mirror07-05-2025

Broadcasting regular Ofcom has assured that it is 'not a censor' amid criticism over guidance around offensive language that a broadcaster has said affects their output
Broadcast regulator Ofcom has faced calls to provide exemptions from language "restrictions" for "classic comedies". The news comes amid concern that the likes of the Carry On! films could end up lost to history in the future.
Ofcom provides guidance on how acceptable TV viewers consider particular "offensive" words and uses research, including surveys on language, to inform its decisions. The regulator - which has the power to issue sanctions - has previously assured that there is no list of "banned" words.

The Telegraph reports this week that critics argue that the evolving nature of language and social norms means that TV channels are being held to a constantly changing set of standards. The outlet suggests that words like "t**ser," "sl**" and "t**t" have previously been taken out of Carry On Laughing, Please Sir!, Whose Line is it Anyway? and On The Buses, for example.

Jonathan Moore, who runs Rewind TV, told the outlet: "I think people have a thicker skin than maybe Ofcom gives them credit for. It's the nanny state, isn't it, really?" He suggested that it's "arbitrary" and that offensive is subjective.
Talking Pictures TV's Sarah Cronin-Stanley however said that her channel has "happy medium" to stay within Ofcom's codes. She said that any edits to programmes sparks a backlash from viewers though.
Jonathan argues that the regulator's approach means that 'classic programming' is at risk of being edited beyond recognition as broadcasters self-censor. He warns that this could ultimately lead to some films becoming 'extinct'.
He said the "last thing" broadcasters want is a fine because they have "let something slip". Jonathan added that as a result he's "very nervous" and that his channel potentially goes "further" than it should because of "that fear".
According to the Telegraph, campaigners are now calling on Ofcom to grant an exemption for "classic comedies". The idea has been compared to how cars can be exempt from MOTs and road tax if they are over 40 years old.

It's been suggested that this would mean "old-school programmes" can avoid "language restrictions" on the condition that viewers are given adequate warning over the content in advance. Comedy historian Robert Ross told the outlet that trigger warnings are a 'small price to pay' to preserve content from British history.
An Ofcom spokesperson told the Mirror: "Ofcom is not a censor. Freedom of expression is at the heart of our broadcasting rules which do not prevent the broadcast of content that may be offensive or controversial to some audiences. There is editorial freedom for each broadcaster to decide how it covers any issue, topic or programme type.

"In our research, audiences recognise offensive language can play an important role on TV and radio. But viewers and listeners still want broadcasters to take care with potentially offensive terms, particularly so children are protected, and especially when discriminatory language is used. Our rules and research help broadcasters to strike the right balance."
They added: "We've explored people's views on the acceptability of outdated or discriminatory content being broadcast in older programmes. Our research reflects that viewers welcome being warned about this kind content at the start of programmes whilst still being given the opportunity to watch and enjoy older material."

Amanda Holden 'goes naked' on radio after BGT dress Ofcom complaints

Amanda Holden took to the airwaves on Thursday morning alongside pal Jamie Theakston and appeared to be naked for their breakfast morning show on Heart FM Amanda Holden seemingly shunned any Ofcom complaints by appearing to be naked on air. The Britain's Got Talent judge's outfit on the ITV talent show's finale was criticised by some viewers, but she was clearly unfazed. She appears to have ignored any negative views - and looked to be completely nude on Heart FM's Breakfast Show's live stream. Her appearance even made her co-host Jamie Theakston do a double take. ‌ As she sat in her DJ chair on Thursday morning, she said on air: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" ‌ Jamie seemed to stumble in his response, replying: "Do you know what... You are wearing clothes, aren't you?" His comments amused his pal and co-host. She laughed as she said back: "I just looked and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" The camera angle made it look like the 54-year-old had no clothes on, with only a chunky pearl necklace visible. She was, however, also wearing a pale pink strapless dress and was photographed outside of the London studios. As well as Amanda's BGT finale dress complaints following Saturday's show, fellow judge Alesha Dixon's attire was also criticised. The duo, alongside Simon Cowell and Bruno Tonioli, watched on as the public voted for magician Harry Moulding as their winner. In total, the female judges' outfits received 72 complaints to Ofcom. When contacted by the Mirror, Ofcom said they had received the complaints from viewers, who alleged the star's frocks were "too revealing for a family show". ‌ Amanda had stunned in her final outfit for the ITV talent competition after vowing to never tone down her fashion choices. It came after she had received a number of criticisms since the series started. She made sure to pull out all the stops for the star-studded finale, opting for a braless, plunging custom-made white silk gown from Saint Hendrix. She wore her hair slicked back into a bun with several bejewelled clips. ‌ Alesha meanwhile, turned heads in a sequin-strewn see-through jump suit, which revealed her underwear. It's far from the first time the pair's looks have been complained about on the show. In July 2017, Amanda wore a plunging see-through Julien Macdonald dress. It went on to be the most complained about TV moment of the year. The mum-of-two joked the incident was a 'national crisis' at the time. She teased in Closer magazine: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" She went on: "I had bits of fish wire underneath my breasts trying to hold that together... It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but, oh no, I will not be covered up."

Sitting in her DJ hot seat on Thursday morning, Amanda looked across at a monitor for the live stream and admitted: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. "It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" Stuttering, Jamie replied: "Do you know what... You are wearing clothes, aren't you?" Laughing, Amanda told her co-host: "I just looked and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" With her blonde hair loose around her shoulders, it did look as though Amanda, 54, was in the buff. The only thing visible was a chunky string of pearls around her neck featuring a gold heart. But Amanda was in fact wearing clothes. The glam mum-of-two was pictured outside Global's studios in London after the show had finished in a pale pink strapless dress made of suede. Her figure-hugging frock fell at the knee and Amanda had teamed it with nude court shoes and a matching handbag. Britain's Got Talent fans hit out at judge during live final as they rage 'what is he doing-' She also popped on a pair of sunglasses, despite the wet weather in the capital. The Sun revealed on Wednesday how ITV had been hit with a flurry of complaints following the BGT final. Television watchdog Ofcom received 96 complaints in total about the live finale - with 72 relating to Amanda and Alesha's skin-baring dresses. Amanda chose to wear a long, white gown with dramatic cowl neck for the telly extravaganza - and had just a very skimpy bra underneath. Alesha, meanwhile, wore a sheer floor-length dress that gave fans of the show a good look at her underwear. At the time, one viewer had complained on X: "Love the show, but what a shame that Amanda and Alesha have to dress like they are going to some special nightclub." Another fumed: "Catching up on #BGT and what is Amanda wearing? Not really appropriate for a family show." A third compared Amanda's dress to a "tea towel". Amanda is no stranger to baring the flesh and deliberately chooses outfits that show off her incredible figure. Speaking to The Sun at the BGT premiere, she cackled: "I constantly scroll through Instagram when I'm on car journeys and bombard my stylist with loads of ideas. "It's thigh splits and cleavage. "I have a whole 't*t committee' [in the production team] that watches everything [to prevent 'accidents']." 5 Amanda was actually wearing a strapless pink suede dress on Thursday Credit: The Mega Agency 5 It gave the impression she was nude behind her desk Credit: The Mega Agency
