Finally, heavens ring in jubilation
This is a dream come true for many local football supporters. It is like God heard their cry.
Ladies and gentlemen, let's put our hands together and congratulate Young Pirates FC as they will campaign in the ABC Motsepe League in the 2025/2026 season. The latter made the Vaal proud when they became the Gauteng champions at the Inter-Regional play-offs held in Pretoria over the weekend.
PAR EXCELLENCE!
Jou lekker ding!
For a long time, Zakes' Sports Corner pleaded for this to happen, and somebody's heard my prayers at last! What else can Zakes' Sports Corner ask for? Of course, this is something to celebrate, considering how long it took this region to have a team in the ABC Motsepe League. Can somebody bring a bottle of champagne to celebrate this remarkable achievement?
Gone are the days when teams from outside the Vaal would come to enjoy the freedom of our facilities because we didn't have a team that played at this level. It is the Vaal people's responsibility to support Young Pirates FC. This club is now the pride of the Vaal, to say the least! Gone are the days when we would be called the sleeping giants of South African football.
This region was called the sleeping giants of South African football after the now defunct Vaal Professional relegated from the top-flight football.
This region was without top-flight football for years, and now, at least, Young Pirates will represent us in the second division league, which is regarded as one of the competitive leagues in South African football.
This is despite the great players and football administrators this region produced in the past. Those with long memories will remember the par excellence football this region produced in George 'Kid Action' Thabe and Dr Molefi Oliphant, to mention a few.
Zakes' Sports Corner wants to join the thousands of Vaal football people to congratulate Young Pirates for their promotion to the ABC Motsepe League. It was long overdue, shame!

'Chiefs are winning' : Tso Vilakazi praises Kaizer Chiefs after their impressive win against Richards Bay
The club confirmed the acquisitions of Etiosa Ighodaro, Asanele Velebayi, and Luke Baartman in front of their home fans at the stadium. Chiefs claimed a 1–0 victory over Richards Bay on Tuesday, courtesy of a Gaston Sirino strike in the 57th minute. But it wasn't just the result that grabbed headlines; the Soweto giants also announced three new signings after the win. Former Orlando Pirates midfield maestro Tso Vilakazi has heaped praise on Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs following their third consecutive win in the Betway Premiership at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday. Immediate impact off the bench from Gastón Sirino 😤 It's beautiful stuff from Amakhosi 🤩🎯 📺 Stream #BetwayPrem on DStv: Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel Speaking after the match on the iDiski TV podcast, Vilakazi praised Amakhosi for the bold move and acknowledged the club's growing momentum. "Kaizer Chiefs is a very big team in South Africa and Africa. They have created history today; it's the first team to announce players at the stadium after a win," Vilakazi said The Buccaneers' all-time leading goalscorer added that while Amakhosi's winning form is good for South African football, he remains slightly concerned about their ability to sustain it over the course of the season. "Chiefs are winning, there is nothing wrong with it, it's good for the team spirit and for everyone to come behind the team, especially because of what happened last season. When you see the team win, it gives you hope that everything will be okay," he added. "If they continue with what they are doing over the weekend, they will be surprises". IOL Sport

Rankings: Horror scenario where Springboks could fall to SIXTH
The Rugby Championship could not have got off to worse start for the Springboks as they were shocked by the Wallabies in a 38-22 defeat that cost them the No 1 spot in the world rankings. As a result of the Springboks' horror 38-22 defeat to Australia, they lost a whopping three rankings points and plunged to third place, while the All Blacks' good win over Argentina saw them gain 0.45 rankings points to leapfrog to the summit There is still an expectation that the Springboks will bounce back against Australia in Cape Town this Saturday, but the fact remains: if they suffer another defeat by more than 15 points – a rankings nightmare would materialise. A heavy defeat to the Wallabies – a team still ranked sixth in the world – could see the Springboks lose a further 2.65 rankings points, and that would see them plummet to sixth spot below England. Such a fall from grace would be almost unthinkable, but so was the scoreline last weekend. If the Springboks were to suffer a defeat of less than 15 points, they would manage to hang onto third spot in the rankings, but they'd lose 1.77 ranking points and only just be marginally ahead of France and England. That's the horror scenario, but by contrast, if the Springboks secure a big win over Australia by more than 15 points, they can jump back to second place ahead of Ireland. Those permutations are based on the likelihood of New Zealand claiming victory against Argentina on Saturday night. Even so, ultimately the only way the All Blacks could lose top spot is if they somehow lost by more than 15 points to the Pumas while the Springboks beat Australia. 1 (↑2) New Zealand 92.51 2 (↑3) Ireland 89.83 3 (↓1) South Africa 89.78 (-3.00) 4 France 87.82 5 England 87.64 6 Australia 85.08 (+3.00) 7 Argentina 81.60 8 Scotland 81.57 9 Fiji 80.50 10 Italy 77.77 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. For his first fight against Strickland at UFC 297, where he claimed the title, he is reported to have earned R7.6 million. Over the last four UFC events, Du Plessis has earned roughly R138 million to R147 million. In his initial UFC bouts, Du Plessis earned approximately $50,000 (over R880,000) per fight, including show money and win bonuses. For instance, his fight against Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 reportedly earned him around $250,000 (R4.5 million). In total, it's estimated that Du Plessis has made R160 million over the last five years. While the loss to Chimaev may sting in the short term, Dricus du Plessis' financial success and rising profile in the UFC show that his star is only going up. With his skill, marketability, and growing fan base, Du Plessis has not only cemented himself as one of South Africa's premier MMA exports but also positioned himself for even bigger paydays and opportunities on the global stage. The future looks bright – both in the octagon and in his bank account. IOL Sport Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel.
