Passenger Dragged Off Plane by Authorities After Allegedly Fighting with Cabin Crew Over Turning Off Her Cellphone
A passenger got into a physical dispute over turning off her cellphone, an airline claims, leading her to be dragged of the plane by authorities
Ibom Air issued a statement about the incident, alleging that Ms. Comfort Emmanson "posed a serious threat to the safety" of its crew, passengers and aircraft
The airline also said the woman has been banned from flying with the company, citing its "zero-tolerance policy"A passenger was dragged off a plane in Nigeria after allegedly refusing to switch off her cellphone.
The incident occurred on Sunday, Aug. 10 on an Ibom Air aircraft that was traveling from the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the airline confirmed in a statement shared on Facebook.
The airline identified the passenger as Ms. Comfort Emmanson, claiming that her "conduct posed a serious threat to the safety" of crew, passengers and the aircraft.

The airline explained that she had reportedly been "instructed in line with standard aviation safety procedures, to switch off" her cellphone, adding that the pilot-in-command also made an announcement.
Another passenger sitting next to Emmanson then allegedly took her phone and switched it off, prompting "a verbal tirade" from her, the airline said, adding that "the situation was eventually calmed, and the flight departed as scheduled."
After the plane arrived in Lagos, Emmanson reportedly "waited for all other passengers to disembark and then proceeded to confront" the crew member who had instructed her to turn off her phone, alleging that she tore off the flight attendant's wig, removed her glasses and "slapped her several times."
The moment was captured on camera, per a video shared by the Associated Press, with the clip showing the passenger being dragged down the aircraft's steps.
Ibom Air alleged in the statement that Emmanson had also "attempted to forcibly remove a fire extinguisher to use as a weapon, an act that could have damaged and grounded the aircraft."
The pilot-in-command ended up alerting security, and the passenger was "restrained and removed from the aircraft by force," the airline continued adding that Emmanson was then taken into custody by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) security before being handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
Emmanson will no longer be permitted to fly with the airline, the airline noted in its statement, adding that the company has a "zero-tolerance policy towards any form of unruly or violent conduct that threatens the safety of passengers, crew or equipment."
"Safety remains our highest priority. We urge all passengers to comply with crew instructions at all times for the safety, security and comfort of everyone on board," the airline concluded.

According to the AP, Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), addressed the incident by saying, "When cabin crew ask you to turn off your phone before takeoff or landing, simply comply." He added, "I can't understand why simple routine issues would lead to incidents like this. Passengers need to understand they have responsibilities, not just rights."
However, in a statement posted to X, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the airline's actions, demanding that "Ibom Air immediately withdraw the lifetime ban, issue a public apology to Ms. Emmanson, and cooperate fully with an impartial investigation into this incident."
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Ibom Air, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority's Achimugu and the Nigerian Bar Association didn't immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.

Fatal shooting at Sacramento's William Land Park sparks calls for tighter security measures
Neighbors are calling for a park policy change following a fatal shooting at Sacramento's William Land Park. The shooting happened at night when the park is supposed to be closed, but neighbors say that's not always enforced. The male victim was found shot and killed inside a car on 13th Avenue inside William Land Park early Thursday morning. "It's shocking. It's not what we want to experience in any of our parks in Sacramento," said Kristina Rogers, president of the Land Park Community Association. Rogers said that the park has many family-friendly attractions, including the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town. "It happened in a very quiet neighborhood part of the park, right next to a children's playground," she said. "That's really hard for us to accept." Rogers' neighborhood organization has been asking the city to change its park security policy for years. The park closes to the public at sunset, but she said the metal gates that prevent cars from driving through are not closed and the public bathroom near the shooting scene is not locked after hours. "When you have open gates and open bathrooms at night when the park is closed, that seems to be the time when a lot of the criminal behavior starts to show up," she said. Jeff Strenk lives across from the crime scene and wants the nighttime park closure to be enforced. "If there were to be locked at night, I think that would go a long way towards improving security," Strenk said. Now, following this violent crime, it appears there is a change coming. A representative in City Councilmember Rick Jenning's office said that the park bathrooms will now be locked at sundown. We broke the news to Strenk. "That's awesome," he said. "I think that's a great idea, a great decision and probably long overdue." Sacramento police say no arrests have been made in connection with this shooting, and the name of the victim has not yet been released.

Firefighters warn about tabletop fire pits after explosion inside Massachusetts home
By AARON PARSEGHIAN Firefighters in Avon, Massachusetts are warning residents about the dangers of tabletop fire pits after one exploded inside a home Thursday night, leaving a person with third-degree burns across their body. Assistant Fire Chief Brad Cronin said the victim was using isopropyl alcohol to ignite the small device when it erupted in flames, burning at temperatures around 1,600 degrees. The fire pit used liquid fuel and a cotton wick; a combination Cronin described as inherently dangerous. "These have been increasingly more popular from online retailers or mercantile stores," Cronin said. "Having an open flame device and a pouring of liquid into something that's already hot or maybe ignited just creates a very high fire risk. We'd caution anybody to not use this type of product." Similar products have been linked to serious injuries in the past, including the deaths of a 93-year-old New Hampshire couple last summer after a fire pit explosion. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning late last year advising people not to buy or use liquid-fueled tabletop fire pits. In October 2024, Colsen recalled a fire pit device due to risk of serious burn injury. "Fire pits that require consumers to pour isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or other liquid fuel into an open container or bowl and then ignite the pooled liquid in the same location it was poured violate the requirements in voluntary safety standard ASTM F3363-19. ASTM F3363-19 is designed to prevent pool fires in which flames burn along the surface of pooled or spilled flammable liquids, and flame jetting in which flames erupt from containers of liquid fuel," reads the 2024 warning from CPSC. Cronin said their thoughts are with the injured resident and urged anyone considering a fire pit to purchase only models labeled as meeting safety standards and never use them indoors.

Trump Makes Wild Claim to Excuse His Fascist Washington Takeover
The U.S. president is still on his quest to cast doubt on crime and safety in the nation's capital. In a lengthy post on Truth Social Wednesday evening, Donald Trump attempted to further justify his total takeover of the city's law enforcement by undermining the credibility of the city's homicide statistics, which his own administration boasted Monday had hit a 30-year low. 'Washington, D.C., has one of the Highest Rates of Crime in the World, more than many of the most violent Third World Countries,' Trump wrote, claiming that the city's homicide rate is higher than Mexico City, Bogota, Islamabad, Addis Ababa, and Fallujah, Iraq. 'If D.C. were a State, it would have the highest Homicide Rate of any State in America,' he continued. 'The Violent Crime Rate in D.C. has worsened, and the Murder Rate has essentially DOUBLED in just over a decade—But these are only the 'official' statistics released by corrupt City Officials. The REAL numbers are many times worse.' Washington doesn't even place in the top 50 for the most dangerous cities in the world. Violent crime has been on the decline in D.C. since 2023, funneling into a nationwide crime drop the following year that saw homicide rates plummet across the country, reported The Washington Post. In 2024, crime in the nation's capital was down 35 percent from the previous year, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department. But that hasn't fit into Trump's narrative. Instead, the commander in chief alleged that a precinct commander had been 'suspended for allegedly manipulating the Violent Crime Statistics,' and quoted the D.C. police union as a source for the higher crime rates. 'Because the Democrat Government of D.C. has largely stopped investigating, arresting, and prosecuting most Crime, the published statistics don't even capture a fraction of the actual Violence,' Trump wrote. He claimed that the city had stopped arresting people for shoplifting, derided schools as 'dysfunctional' while describing youth gangs as out of control, and alleged that citizens no longer walked the streets, 'essentially becoming captive prisoners in their own city.' 'Citizens are afraid to speak up or, call the Police, lest they be targeted,' Trump wrote. 'The REAL Crime Rates are probably five to ten times what has been reported. D.C. has been under siege from thugs and killers, but now, D.C. is back under Federal Control where it belongs. The White House is in charge. The Military and our Great Police will liberate this City, scrape away the filth, and make it safe, clean, habitable and beautiful once more!' Meanwhile, large crowds in Washington protested law enforcement checkpoints set up around the city Wednesday night, booing and jeering at the increased police presence. Solve the daily Crossword
