Manipur Marks 2nd Anniversary Of Ethnic Clashes With Mass Gatherings
Imphal/Churachandpur:
A statewide shutdown and mass gatherings marked the second anniversary of the ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki and Zomi tribes of Manipur on Saturday, amid demands for free and safe movement of all residents, and a separate administrative arrangement.
Shutdowns, observed in both the Meitei-dominant Imphal valley and the Kuki-Zo-dominated hill districts, brought life to a grinding halt across the state.
While the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) enforced the shutdown in the valley, the Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO) led similar actions in the hill areas.
In the state capital Imphal, COCOMI organised a public convention at Khuman Lampak Stadium, where speakers urged the central government to ensure the "free and safe movement" of all residents in the state.
Christened the 'Manipur People's Convention', it adopted a resolution accusing the Centre of failing in its responsibilities and called for an immediate and time-bound roadmap to restore peace and normalcy.
"The People's Convention demands that the Government of India formally accept responsibility for its role in perpetuating the crisis and immediately initiate a comprehensive, time-bound roadmap for the restoration of peace, law and order, and a secure environment for all communities in Manipur," it stated.
The convention also condemned the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreements with militant groups like the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and United People's Front (UPF), claiming these units received "safe havens, financial backing, and logistical support" under the guise of the pact since 2008.
The resolution emphasised that Manipur's territorial integrity must not be compromised.
"Under no circumstance shall the territorial integrity, historical identity, and political unity of Manipur be compromised. Any attempt, external or internal, to divide or disintegrate the state will be firmly and collectively opposed by the people of Manipur," it added.
It also urged the Centre to address illegal immigration, alleging that many individuals have settled in the state using forged documents.
In Churachandpur, thousands of Kuki-Zo residents gathered at the 'Wall of Remembrance' in Tuibuong to observe 'Separation Day', marking their community's continuing demand for a separate administrative arrangement.
The day was marked by memorial events, musical tributes, and the distribution of compensation to 127 victims by the Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights.
Ginza Vualzong, spokesperson for the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), said: "Until and unless our demands for a separate administration in the form of Union Territory is granted, we will continue to fight for justice." Lenminlal Gangte, vice-president of KSO Churachandpur, added that peace cannot be set as a precondition for resolving the conflict with the Meiteis.
Another memorial event took place at the Sehken Village burial site, where MLA LM Khaute advocated for political autonomy, again in the form of a Union Territory.

Video: Party Worker Puts Garland On UP Politician, Then Slaps Him Multiple Times
Jaunpur (UP): A party worker reportedly slapped Mahendra Rajbhar, national president of the Suheldev Swabhiman Party (SSP), repeatedly soon after garlanding the latter on stage during a public gathering in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district. After a video of the assault went viral on social media, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav condemned the incident as "another example of atrocities and insult" on PDA, alleging the BJP's complicity in it. Mr Yadav uses the abbreviation PDA for 'pichde' (backward classes), Dalits, and 'alpsankhyak' (minorities). The incident took place at Ashapur village under the Jalalpur police station limits during a function held on the occasion of Maharaja Suheldev's victory day. The event was organised to perform 'bhoomi pujan' for installing a statue of the revered Rajbhar icon in the Rajbhar-dominated Zafarabad Assembly constituency. Mahendra Rajbhar, a native of Mau district, was the chief guest at the event. To the audience's shock, Brijesh Rajbhar, a party worker, first garlanded Mahendra Rajbhar and then slapped him multiple times in full public view, causing chaos at the event. Following the assault, Mahendra Rajbhar accused Uttar Pradesh Cabinet minister and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president Om Prakash Rajbhar of orchestrating the attack. However, no statement has yet been issued by Om Prakash Rajbhar or the SBSP in response to the acquisition. After the incident, Mahendra Rajbhar left the venue and filed a complaint at the Jalalpur police station, naming Brijesh Rajbhar. Speaking to reporters, he claimed that Brijesh Rajbhar met Om Prakash Rajbhar four to five days before the event and that the attack was planned under the latter's direction. "Brijesh was once a worker in my party, but he currently holds no official position. I don't know how or why he came to the event or who invited him. There is no internal dispute in the party or any financial disagreement," Mahendra Rajbhar said, adding that though many people were present at the event, Brijesh Rajbhar was the one who attacked him. Confirming that Mahendra Rajbhar has lodged a complaint, Jalalpur SHO Triveni Singh said the viral video of the incident was under review as part of the investigation. Reacting to the incident, Akhilesh Yadav alleged BJP's complicity in the attack, which he termed another example of growing atrocities on PDA. 'The violent attack on senior leader Mahendra Rajbhar is yet another condemnable example of the growing insults and atrocities faced by the PDA society under BJP rule," Mr Yadav posted in Hindi on X. "If the BJP thinks it can sustain its divisive politics by breaking communities from within, it is gravely mistaken. If the BJP is not complicit in this attack, the assailant must be immediately arrested and punished for his actions," Mr Yadav said. "Violence is a manifestation of desperation. The BJP should remember that such acts will not demoralise the PDA but strengthen its resolve further. Long live the Constitution, long live the PDA,' he added. Mahendra Rajbhar was previously associated with the SBSP and served as its national vice-president before parting ways ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections to form his own party. He had accused Om Prakash Rajbhar of deviating from the party's mission and prioritising personal financial gains. In the current Uttar Pradesh Assembly, SBSP's Jagdish Narayan Rai represents Zafarabad. He won the 2022 election as part of an alliance with the Samajwadi Party.

PC Mohan Flags ₹28,405 Cr Metro Cost, Calls for Red Line Reassessment
The Union Government has asked for a revision of the cost estimates for Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3A (Red Line), citing its exceptionally high projected cost. The line, planned from Sarjapur to Hebbal, is the most expensive project in Namma Metro's history, estimated at ₹28,405 crore, or ₹776 crore per kilometre. Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan justified the Centre's move, stating that the line is indeed crucial for the city's future transit needs, but that the costs must be reviewed. 'Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3A (Red Line) from Sarjapur to Hebbal is crucial, but at ₹28,405 crore (₹776 crore/km), it is the most expensive project in Namma Metro's history. The Centre has rightly sought revisions. BMRCL will now reassess and aim to reduce the high estimated costs,' Mohan tweeted. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has directed that an expert agency review the cost estimate before the project receives final approval from the State Government. According to the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the cost escalations are due to several factors, including: Land acquisition Station construction Underground tunneling and alignment Traction and power supply Signalling and telecommunication systems Train procurement The proposed Red Line spans 36.59 km, with 22.14 km elevated and 14.45 km underground. It will include 28 stations in total — 17 elevated and 11 underground. This stretch is considered vital for connecting the growing IT hubs of Sarjapur with north Bengaluru, including key areas around Hebbal. However, the revised cost structure and implementation timeline will now depend on the findings of the expert review and subsequent decisions by BMRCL. Bengaluru's Metro Phase 3A (Red Line) from Sarjapur to Hebbal is crucial, but at ₹28,405 crore (₹776 crore/km), it is the most expensive project in Namma Metro's history.
