Michigan State basketball renews series with in-state opponent

USA Today30-07-2025
Michigan State basketball is adding an in-state opponent with a familiar face on the bench to their 2025-26 schedule, renewing an old series between the two.
Michigan State ill be hosting the Detroit Mercy Titans at the Breslin Center on Friday, Nov. 21, for the first matchup between the two schools since 2020. The Spartans won the 2020 meeting, 83-76.
An interesting matchup between the two schools is centered around Titans head coach Mark Montgomery, who is a Spartan alum and former MSU assistant coach. As always, Izzo will love bringing a friend and former assistant back to campus for an in-state showdown.

Notre Dame guard Billy Schrauth named to the 2025 Lombardi Award preseason Watch List

If Notre Dame is going to return to the College Football Playoff, strong offensive line play figures to be one key driving force. Recognized as one of the strongest units in the country, the O-Line is anchored by guard Billy Schrauth, who was named to the 2025 Lombardi Award preseason Watch List. Schrauth and the Fighting Irish offensive line have the luxury of facing one of the better defensive lines in the country every day in practice, so it comes as no surprise that this O-Line is prepared for the nation's best week in and week out. The Lombardi Award Committee's preseason list features 90 of the nation's top linemen and linebackers based on previous performances and potential for the coming season. This season's honorees include 18 defensive tackles, 17 defensive ends, 19 linebackers, 18 offensive tackles, 10 offensive guards (including Schrauth), 6 centers and 2 tight ends. Established in 1970 in memory of the legendary Vince Lombardi, the award is presented to outstanding linemen who best epitomize their values of leadership, courage, performance, and discipline on and off the field. Former Notre Dame lineman Howard Cross III making waves for the Cincinnati Bengals in camp

It wasn't a surprise when new Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Al Golden pushed the team to pick up one of his former Notre Dame players in defensive tackle Howard Cross III. Golden knows exactly what the defender brings to the table, and while he went undrafted, the Bengals quickly made a move to sign him. Cross wasn't guaranteed a spot on the roster due to this fact, but he has been playing very well and might be pushing Cincinnati to keep him around. Their head coach Zac Taylor recently spoke to the media about Cross, and gave a glowing review. He said that his undrafted rookie defensive tackle 'has shown the ability to do the things we're asking those guys to do. Do the dirty work and do it how we want it done.' It's pretty safe to say that Golden knew that Cross could be productive at this level, and them getting a chance to reunite should be great for both of their careers. Oklahoma reviewing potential gambling activity from QB John Mateer

While college sports feature ads for different gambling sites every other commercial, the act of collegiate athletes gambling is still strictly prohibited and often a fast-track ticket to suspensions or worse. The latest saga around gambling activity in the college football world has the spotlight shining squarely on the Oklahoma Sooners and their new transfer quarterback John Mateer, just before the 2025 season is set to begin. Images of John Mateer's Venmo activity bubbled up on X and showed payments that raised some eyebrows about potential gambling activity from the quarterback. In November 2022, multiple payments were made with titles referencing sports betting and a game between UCLA and USC. Pete Thamel of ESPN has reported that Oklahoma is aware of the situation and is currently reviewing any gambling activity from John Mateer, which he has maintained did not occur. John Mateer is entering his first year with the Oklahoma Sooners after spending three years with the Washington State Cougars and brings hope to the fanbase that he can ignite a Sooners offense that struggled at times in 2024. Last season, Mateer threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns while completing 64.6% of his passes. He also showed off his legs, adding 826 rushing yards and 15 more touchdowns on the ground.
