Say no to drugs, yes to life: Telangana DGP to students
He was speaking at the launch of Drug Awareness Week at the Telangana State Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGICCC) in the presence of around 2,000 students from 15 schools. Aiming to sensitise schoolchildren to the dangers of drug abuse, Drug Awareness Week will be observed from June 21 to 26.
Dr Jitender said the state government was committed to making Telangana a drug-free state with zero tolerance. 'We must all support the government and the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) in this mission,' he added.
As part of the initiative, awareness rallies, seminars, public outreach programmes, and inter-departmental campaigns will be held across schools, colleges, and community spaces.
A special message board allowed students to write pledges and share thoughts against drug use, encouraging a collective stand against substance abuse.

Sale of cigarettes, gutkha products rampant near educational institutions
Recent searches on paan shops and other establishments by Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) and the NTR commissionerate of police laid bare the poor implementation of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COPTA-2003). Special teams led by EAGLE head and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ake Ravi Krishna and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP-NTR) K.G.V. Saritha and other police officers searched shops near education institutions on Pinnamaneni Polyclinic Road near Benz Circle a few days ago and seized different brands of cigarettes, gutkha packets and tobacco products. These shops were located near a pharma college, a hotel management institute, a degree college and a couple of schools. 'We have booked the shop owners and explained to them COPTA–2003 and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985,' Mr. Ravi Krishna said. EAGLE officials noticed a secret room attached to a paan shop and found students smoking in it. Locals alleged that despite several complaints on the sale of banned gutkha products and cigarettes at paan shops near educational institutions, there was no response. 'Some shop owners sold cigarettes and tobacco products to schoolchildren and maintained secret rooms,' Sriram, a youth, told the EAGLE team. Meanwhile, Director-General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta directed the police to conduct searches and prevent the sale of tobacco products, gutkhas and cigarettes within 100 yards of educational institutions. 'The joint raids were aimed at implementing the guidelines of Tobacco Free Education Institutions (TOFEI) and prevent the sale of narcotic drugs. cigarettes, gutkha and tobacco products,' the DGP said.

HC orders Punjab to promote inspector who fought terrorist in Dinanagar as DSP
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Punjab govt to promote an inspector with the special operations cell of Punjab Police, , who suffered bullet injuries during the 2015 terrorist attack at Dinanagar police station in Gurdaspur district, to the rank of DSP. There was a conscious decision to grant promotion which was never withdrawn or modified…This court is of the considered opinion that the petitioner was also entitled to promotion from the rank of Inspector to DSP," observed the HC while directing the state to promote Balbir Singh. In its detailed order released on Friday, the HC also observed that by giving an out-of-turn promotion as DSP to another cop, Bikramjit Singh Brar, the state has considered that an inspector may be promoted out of turn. "The appointment and promotion to the post of DSP is governed by 1959 Rules. Rule 14 empowers govt to relax any provision for the reasons to be recorded in writing," the HC has held. The HC passed these orders while allowing the plea filed by Balbir Singh, who joined Punjab Police in 1992 as an ASI and was promoted to inspector in 2011. During the Dinanagar operation, he played a key role in saving the Gurdaspur senior superintendent of police (SSP) and suffered two gunshot injuries fired from AK-47 rifles by the terrorists. He was admitted to a private hospital in Amritsar where he underwent surgery. On Aug 3, the state govt condemned the Dinanagar terrorist attack and announced a job for the next of kin of martyr cops. It was also announced to promote the injured cops to the next rank. The DGP also awarded him Prakaram Padak and Rs 50,000 monetary help on account of sustaining injuries during the encounter. Later, the state govt promoted all the cops but denied him promotion to the rank of DSP on the grounds that since he was awarded the President's Police Medal for Gallantry, he could not be promoted. On this, Balbir Singh contended that during the pendency of the petition, the state appointed another inspector, Bikramjit Singh Brar, as DSP, who was also awarded the President's Police Gallantry Award. He encountered notorious gangster Vicky Goundar on Jan 25, 2018. He was promoted by the decision of the cabinet. If the similarly situated inspector can be promoted, there is no reason to deny the benefit of promotion to the petitioner, his counsel submitted. After hearing all the parties, the HC observed that the appointment of Bikramjit Singh Brar was not as per the procedure contemplated by the 1959 Rules, whereas it was because of the decision of the council of ministers. While asking the state to promote Balbir Singh to DSP, the HC, however, made it clear that he shall not be entitled to any financial benefits for the period he was not holding the rank of DSP.

Filed breach of privilege complaint against Jharkhand officials: Nishikant Dubey after FIR against him
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Saturday (August 9, 2025) said he has filed a complaint with the Lok Sabha Speaker, alleging breach of privilege by Jharkhand officials, including the chief secretary and the DGP, after an FIR was registered against him for "hurting religious sentiments". The Jharkhand Police on Friday (August 8, 2025) said it has registered an FIR against BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey, Manoj Tiwari and others for "forcibly" entering the sanctum sanctorum of the Baba Baidyanath Temple in Deoghar on August 2 and hurting religious sentiments. "Fifty-one cases lodged against me. I have filed a case of privilege under Article 105 of the Constitution against the chief secretary, director general of police, Deoghar deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Jharkhand," Mr. Dubey posted on X. The FIR was lodged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as per a complaint by temple priest Kartik Nath Thakur for 'forcibly entering the inner shrine on August 2 between 8.45 p.m. and 9 p.m.' despite a restriction on VIP or VVIP entry during the holy month of 'Shravan' in view of a large number of devotees. "I am the trustee of Baba Baidyanath Dham as a member of Parliament, as per the law. I am in a higher position than the priest. On what basis was the FIR lodged?" he asked while speaking to reporters in Deoghar. Dubey claimed that he went to Baba Baidyanath Dham Police Station so that the police personnel could arrest him, but they refused to do so.
