German backpacker Carolina Wilga released from hospital days after being found alive and ‘ravaged' by mosquitos

Sky News AU5 days ago
German backpacker Carolina Wilga has been discharged from hospital in Perth just days after she was discovered alive and 'ravaged' by mosquitos following 11 nights in the outback.
Police announced Ms Wilga, 26, had been discovered 'safe and well' in the Karroun Hill Reserve area of Western Australia's Wheatbelt region on Friday following a major search for the backpacker, who disappeared 12 days prior.
After being found, Inspector Martin Glynn had said Ms Wilga was taken to nearby Beacon before she was flown to Perth to be provided medical treatment.
"She does have some injuries. She's been ravaged by mosquitoes. She's obviously been through an amazing journey,' Inspector Glynn said the day she was found.
WA Police Detective Acting Inspector Jessica Securo on Saturday then revealed more details about Ms Wilga's condition upon her discovery.
'She was very distressed, obviously exhausted, dehydrated, needed some food… but overall just relieved that she had come across someone and was able to get that help,' Inspector Securo told Weekend Today.
The backpacker was released from Perth's Fiona Stanley Hospital on Wednesday.
In a police statement issued on her behalf, the 26-year-old had expressed a 'huge thank you' to everyone who had supported the search to locate her.
"Previously, I didn't know where my place was in a culture on the other side of the world to my own, but now, I feel a part of it,' she said on Monday.
"I am deeply impressed by the courage, helpfulness and warmth that has been shown to me here."
The backpacker posted pictures from hospital on social media, showing herself holding flowers and surrounded by gifts of food she had apparently received from the German Consulate.
'When you need to gain the 12 kilograms back,' she said in the post.
Her recovery in hospital follows a major search launched after she disappeared on June 29, when she had last been seen visiting a general store in Beacon.
The van she had been driving was found without her in it and Ms Wilga later revealed she had 'lost control' of the vehicle before it rolled down a slope, resulting in her hitting her head which caused her to become disorientated.
"In the crash, I hit my head significantly. As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost," Ms Wilga said.
The person who came across the tourist on the road on Friday, local Tania farmer French, immediately knew it was the missing backpacker when she saw her.
"I stopped. I went out and gave her a hug, I said: 'Look, everyone has been looking for you.' She couldn't believe it. She didn't realise how long (she had been out there)," Ms French told Seven News.
"She said: 'You're my guardian angel' and I said: 'I don't know about that'... But she's just one very lucky person.'

Viral social media account pretending to be Coldplay concert CEO's daughter exposed as fake

A French model has denied she is the daughter of former Astronomer CEO after a viral TikTok account appearing to use videos of her for content. The account, @marinagirll, appeared two days ago, shortly after the infamous Coldplay kiss cam moment which caught former Astronomer CEO Andy Bryon hugging the company's head of HR Kristin Cabot. The account captioned one viral video, 'Reconnecting with life after your dad's affair makes national news' with the woman tying her hair up whilst standing at an outside fire pit, which angered many users on TikTok. One commentor said 'Wow imagines using your dad's affair to get famous. You're a nobody lol. Check in on your mom maybe... ?" TikToker Lizthemillienial posted a video saying the video was not real. A photo posted by his wife to Facebook shows Mr Bryon with his two sons, but there were no posts or photos that prove that he has a daughter. The videos on the Marina Bryon account were allegedly taken from the social media of a French model and singer-songwriter, Julie Tuzet. Miss Tuzet, who lives in Paris, posted to TikTok that she is not the CEO's daughter. She said, 'Guys, I am not the CEO's daughter. You probably saw this video of me at a fireplace reconnecting with nature. It's just someone who stole my videos and content from TikTok to create this fake news, and it's going viral. The TikTok account comes after Mr Byron resigned as CEO of Astronomer, an AI tech firm based in New York. The firm posted a statement to X over the weekend stating that they were investigating the video after the incident at Coldplay's Boston concert went viral. It is unclear whether or not Ms Cabot will be forced to resign, but she currently remains in post whilst the investigation is ongoing.

Backpacker's update after ‘miracle' rescue

German backpacker Carolina Wilga - whose disappearance sparked an enormous search-and-rescue operation in Western Australia - has returned home after her outback ordeal. The 26-year-old survived 12 days lost and alone in remote bushland before being rescued on July 11. She spent the next several days recovering in a Perth hospital, revealing she had lost 12kg during the ordeal. Following her release from hospital, Ms Wilga has now returned to Germany, with local publication BILD reporting: 'Carolina is home again!' She reportedly touched down in Dusseldorf early Sunday afternoon and was taken by ambulance to hospital, where she was met by a nurse and a team of bodyguards. Ms Wilga took to social media to bid a fond farewell to WA before her departure. 'Reunion with the ocean and a great goodbye to Perth with a loooots of hugs,' she wrote in the now-deleted social media post. 'Love you all.' She shared several pictures of herself with friends, her time in hospital, and the front page of a newspaper after her rescue. Ms Wilga last posted on social media on Thursday last week, sharing a picture from her hospital bed surrounded by pastries, chips and other treats. 'When you need to gain the 12 kilograms back,' she captioned the post. Caroline Wilga who spent nearly two weeks missing in Western Australia's Wheatbelt region. Her car was found stuck in soft sand, but authorities could not find any sign of the backpacker herself. A massive search effort went into finding Ms Wilga until local Tania Henley found her walking along the road on July 11. Ms Henley described the rescue as a 'miracle'. Ms Wilga's car was found in dense bushland. WA Police Credit: Supplied In a statement after her rescue, the backpacker explained she had got lost after losing control of her car and getting a knock to her head that left her confused. 'First and foremost, I want to express a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart – a thank you that truly comes from the depth of my soul! For all the incredible supports during the search for me,' Ms Wilga said in her statement. Ms Wilga's car at a petrol station. 'Previously, I didn't know where my place was in a culture on the other side of the world to my own, but now, I feel a part of it. I am deeply impressed by the courage, helpfulness, and warmth that has been shown to me here. 'Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community. Here, humanity, solidarity, and care for one another are what truly matter – and in the end, that's what counts most. 'I am certain that I survived only thanks to this incredible outpouring of support. The thought of all the people who believed in me, searched for me, and kept hoping for me gave me the strength to carry on during my darkest moments.'
