Junior doctor at Melbourne's Austin Hospital arrested after camera allegedly found in staff bathroom
A trainee surgeon at Melbourne's Austin Hospital has been arrested for allegedly filming colleagues inside a staff toilet.
The 27-year-old's Heidelberg West home was raided this morning, after a phone was allegedly found in a staff toilet at the hospital in Melbourne's north on July 3.
'Mernda Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) investigators have arrested a man following an incident at a medical facility in Heidelberg,' Victoria Police said in a statement.
'It is alleged a recording device in the form of a mobile phone was located in a restricted staff toilet of a medical facility in Heidelberg on July 3.
'The device is believed to have been in place for some time before staff became aware and reported the matter to police.

'As a result, police executed a warrant at an address in Heidelberg West this morning, 10 July.'
The man is currently being interviewed by police.
'We take the safety and wellbeing of our staff extremely seriously and recently made a formal report to Victoria Police,' a spokeswoman for Austin Health told news.com.au.
'As this matter is now with the police, we are not able to share more information about the nature of the report.'

Tormented parents of toddlers potentially exposed to sexually transmitted diseases say that even a clean bill of health won't relieve the weight on their hearts, knowing their children were in the orbit of accused abuser Joshua Brown. Almost two weeks after police revealed Brown was behind bars as he awaits trial for allegedly abusing young children in his care, many mums and dads are still in an agonising limbo. One mum told that even if the test results come back negative for her daughter, 'the damage is done' emotionally and her family will have 'a lot of work to do mentally' to put the ordeal behind them. 'The uncertainty and anxiety will always linger now,' the devastated mum said, revealing her test results are due back any day. 'Even when the urine tests come back negative, which I'm hoping and praying they do, this will always be a dark cloud hanging over our heads and we will never have complete peace of mind or certainty over what exposure Joshua Brown had with our kids,' she said. Brown, 26, is due to appear in court in September to face more than 70 charges, including sexually penetrating a child under 12, attempting to sexually penetrate a child under 12, sexually assaulting a child under 16, and producing child abuse material. The charges relate to alleged incidents at the G8 Education owned Creative Garden Early Learning Centre in Point Cook in Victoria where Mr Brown, 26, allegedly abused eight children between April 2022 and January 2023. Brown is also charged with contaminating food with bodily fluids. He was working in the kitchen at a Melbourne childcare centre days before his arrest - assisting in the kitchen at Papilio Early Learning Centre in Essendon, supporting meal preparations while centre chefs were absent. From the day police announced Brown was in custody, parents have been scrambling to understand whether their children at centres across Victoria have come into contact with him. While Victoria Police published a list of 20 centres, other centres came to light in following days. Some remain off the list but centres have confirmed Brown was on staff. A mother from a Milestones centre contacted after learning Brown was at the centre her children attended on December 5, 2024, thanks to Storypark, the platform used for parents to see updates from the centre on their child's day. 'Our kids were there that day too. I feel so sick and upset, that's two days we now know of,' she said. 'Will there be more days discovered and who will tell us? Or do we have to investigate with the news to be our people who find the truth? 'It's sad to think parents are finding out this stuff themselves with the support of the news people, rather than the centre being proactive in telling us. 'I have had other parents speak to me worried sick wanting to know exact dates this person was present at the child care centre. Surely they can tell us - pay slips or records surely.' A father told he was piecing together his own child's visits and trying to match up the dates, 'but also trying to tell ourselves nothing happened but it is becoming sickening'. Another mum said 'I can't sleep at night due to the uncertainty. My heart goes out to the families and children who have been identified and directly affected. 'I feel for all the families and kids, it is such an uncertain time and my main feeling is a mix of confusion, helplessness and fear' All parents spoken to by agreed that 'more needs to be done' to stop child predators from working in the industry. 'A working with children check can be done online in a few minutes. All it really proves is that the child predator has never been identified or caught,' one mother said. 'I feel stronger measures need to be set in place that are systemic overhauls and changes from the centres all having CCTV cameras in every room, locked kitchen areas, no men changing nappies, phones taken off staff and stored in an area where they can only access if on break and away from children, minimum two people in room at all times whether the kids are inside having a nap or playing outside. 'I think the owners of these centres have to take more ownership and accountability for hiring staff. The state and federal governments need to ensure security is tighter at these places than it is up at Parliament House' to avoid 'wolves in sheep's clothing' getting in. The sector has welcomed the government's moves to strengthen protections, with widespread recognition that additional safeguards are needed to restore trust and give parents confidence. The three largest operators – Goodstart, G8 and Affinity – have each moved swiftly to announce and implement measures that go beyond the government's immediate requirements. Together, these providers account for more than 30 per cent of the long day care sector nationally. Affinity's national rollout of CCTV and secure lock boxes across all its centres, is expected to cost around $10 million and is implemented immediately.

Senior Commonwealth Bank executive Christopher James McCann loses job, accounts frozen after being charged with procuring child: court
A senior Commonwealth Bank executive accused of trying to lure two teenagers for a sexual act has been sacked from his job and had his accounts frozen, a court has been told. Christopher James McCann sat stony-faced in Brisbane Arrests Court on Monday – days after his arrest by NSW detectives at the Sydney Airport terminal – as he applied for bail. Despite magistrate Louise Shepherd acknowledging the seriousness of the charge, Mr McCann's lawyer David Jones KC criticised the police's material in objecting to bail as 'unprofessional' and engaging in 'fortune telling'. Mr McCann, 50, is charged with a single count of using the internet to procure a child under 16 for a sexual act. His co-accused, Shauntelle Elizabeth Went, 18, is also facing the same charge. Neither have entered any pleas. On Monday, the court was told police alleged Mr McCann – a married father of two who travelled frequently interstate – formed a 'connection' with Ms Went, a sex worker. It is further alleged Mr McCann was organising to use her services while in Brisbane in May but queried if she had any 'younger friends' she worked with. 'You made an arrangement and agreed on a price to use Ms Went's services and that of two underage girls,' Ms Shepherd said in her summary of the police allegations. The teen girls, aged 14 and 15, and Ms Went allegedly attended the Sofitel Hotel, but Ms Shepherd said it was not alleged the girls went up to Mr McCann's room. The court was told Mr McCann was no longer employed by Commonwealth Bank as a result of the charges. His financial accounts had also been frozen by detectives. Police opposed Mr McCann's bail, claiming there was a risk of further offending and general safety to the community. But Mr Jones took issue with affidavits filed by the arresting officer that he said engaged in 'speculation' and were lacking in objectivity. He also pointed to an affidavit prepared by a clinical psychologist who did not even assess his client. Mr Jones said the police material was speculative and engaging in 'fortune telling', telling the court his client was not in a show-cause position and therefore had a prima facie case for bail being granted. 'What would ordinarily be against an applicant, they have flipped,' Mr Jones said. 'So the fact he's 50 years old with no criminal history, doesn't use drugs, doesn't drink – ordinarily for everybody else, that would be a benefit, but for him, that's a disadvantage.' Ms Shepherd granted Mr McCann bail – ordering him to report to police once a week, not to drink or use illicit drugs and be subject to drug testing. He was also ordered to possess only one phone. Ms Went was also granted bail during an application before Ms Shepherd. The court was told Ms Went was receiving a disability support pension and received money through her OnlyFans account. Both Mr McCann and Ms Went will return to court on August 4.

Police investigating 7mo baby's drowning in lake in Chatsworth Park, Gympie
A seven-month-old boy has died after being found unresponsive in a lake at a Queensland campsite, with police saying they are so far unable to explain how the tragedy unfolded. The baby boy was found in a lake at Chatsworth Park - located north of Gympie - at about 10.30am on Saturday. The baby's mother first raised the alarm and pulled her child from the water. He was rushed to Gympie Hostpial in a life-threatening condition but later died. Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said on Monday that the circumstances surrounding the boy's death so far remained unclear. 'We're treating it as unexplained, that's probably the best term I can use at this point in time,' Inspector Mansfield said. He said the baby was at the park with his mother and father, who were travelling through and staying overnight, with the tragedy occurring the next morning. 'The mother of the child did retrieve the child from the water - it's been a very traumatic experience for her, clearly,' Inspector Mansfield said. 'Multiple people assisted with the CPR of that infant child at the scene and obviously later emergency services.' Police cordoned off parts of the park on Saturday, including a playground and nearby campsite, as they continued their investigation. Chatsworth Park is a well-used rest stop and campsite for highway travellers and has become a place where some homeless people stay long-term. 'Some people stay there permanently and some others are transient, they're just passing through town looking for a place to sleep and the council allows for that,' Inspector Mansfield said. Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area, particularly between 9am and 11am on Saturday, including drivers who may have just been passing through. 'We have information that other vehicles were parked up in the rest stop area,' Inspector Mansfield said. 'They either left just prior or during, we just don't know until we speak to them.' 'There were a couple of vehicles that left the scene who may or may not have seen or heard anything, but we just need to track them down in case they did.' The Child Trauma Unit and the Homicide Investigation Team are assisting with the investigation. No one has been charged in relation to the baby's death.
