GCC Equities Gain as Ceasefire and Fed Hopes Boost Confidence

Arabian Post15 hours ago
Gulf Cooperation Council stock markets rallied in June, with the S&P GCC Composite Index climbing 3 % on easing Middle Eastern tensions and growing expectations of US interest rate cuts. Investor sentiment strengthened across the region, led by notable gains in Kuwait and Dubai.
Kuwait's All Share Index recorded a 4.2 % rise in June, lifting its year‑to‑date performance to 14.8 %. The consumer‑staples and real‑estate sectors led the charge, posting increases of 9.1 % and 7.7 % respectively. The banking sector was also buoyant: Kuwait International Bank gained 15.9 % while Burgan Bank rose 8.7 %, following substantial share acquisitions by insiders. Warba Bank and Gulf Bank climbed 8.5 % and 7.2 %, respectively, as merger talks gained traction.
Dubai's equity market rose approximately 4.1 % over the month. Dubai Islamic Bank and toll operations firm Salik were strong performers, with the former up 4.9 % and the latter rising 2.2 % when the UAE market hit a 17‑year high. Abu Dhabi's index also gained, with Islamic Bank and Aldar Properties climbing 12.1 % and 7.3 %, respectively.

Saudi Arabia's Tadawul index rose 1.6 % during the month. Al Rajhi Bank and Riyad Bank were key contributors, and the International Monetary Fund upgraded Saudi's GDP growth forecast to 3.5 % for 2025, citing robust demand for government-led projects. Qatar's index increased by around 0.8 %, driven by a 1.2 % rise in Qatar National Bank.
Markets surged as a ceasefire between Israel and Iran reduced regional geopolitical risk. Most GCC benchmarks reverted to pre-conflict levels by the end of June, while oil prices remained steady following the truce. Dubai's index in particular reached a 17‑year high on the back of this stability.
Buoyant global trends added further support. The prospect of US rate cuts, raised amid dovish signals from Federal Reserve policymakers and cooling inflation indicators, boosted risk appetite in emerging markets. Wall Street's S&P 500 neared record highs during the same period, underpinning regional investor confidence.
Sector rotation within the Gulf saw strong performances. Kuwaiti consumer staples and real estate led regional returns, while in Saudi, banking stocks remained upward, supported by IMF optimism. UAE financials and tolls also flourished as global capital flowed into yield-bearing assets.
However, oil market dynamics and monetary policy divergence posed selective risks. Although crude prices rebounded, volatility remains a factor for oil-linked economies. Meanwhile, divergence between global central banks—especially between the US Fed and ECB—has put pressure on regional currency pegs, influencing capital flows.
Investor strategies appear focused on defensive yet yield-enhancing sectors amid cautious optimism. Data from Markaz, Kuwait's financial centre, shows strong interest across consumer staples, real estate, and banking, with insider share acquisitions reinforcing positive trader sentiment.
Emerging trend analysis suggests GCC markets are increasingly appealing as geopolitical risk diminishes and global liquidity tilts toward accommodative central bank policy. The IMF's upgraded growth forecasts, particularly in Saudi, and policy divergence supporting higher yields in the Gulf, are luring foreign capital.
Looking ahead, attention will turn to sustainability of the ceasefire, future Fed decisions on policy easing, and crude price movements. GCC markets remain sensitive to developments in US monetary policy and Middle Eastern stability, with any deterioration potentially reversing the current momentum.

India services sector growth hits 10-month high as demand surges, PMI shows

India's services sector enjoyed its strongest growth in ten months in June, fuelled by robust demand and cooling price pressures, a survey showed on Thursday. The HSBC final India Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, climbed to 60.4 in June from 58.8 in May, but was a touch lower than a preliminary estimate of 60.7. The PMI threshold of 50.0 separates growth in activity from contraction. The new business sub-index - a key gauge of demand - rose sharply as companies benefited from sustained strength in the domestic market. This came alongside robust growth in export orders even as the pace slowed slightly from May. Overseas demand was underpinned by improvement from the Asian, Middle Eastern and U.S. markets, according to panelists. The strong demand supported continued job creation although employment growth eased from the record-high touched in May. On the pricing front, input cost inflation across the sector cooled to a ten-month low in June with companies primarily citing higher staff wages as the main source of increased expenses. Service providers maintained enough pricing power to pass some of the cost burden to clients. Output price inflation eased from May and was in line with the historical average. However, the business outlook for the coming year weakened to its lowest level in more than two years. The HSBC India Composite PMI, which combines services and manufacturing activity, rose to 61.0 in June from 59.3, marking the fastest expansion in 14 months. The manufacturing PMI data released this week showed factory activity growth accelerated in June, complementing the robust services performance.

GCC Unified Tourist Visa: Everything you need to know

Travel across the Gulf could soon get a whole lot easier. Say goodbye to visa juggling. The GCC Unified Tourist Visa is officially on the horizon – and it's set to make hopping across your favourite Gulf destinations smoother than ever. In a recent announcement, GCC Secretary General Jassem Al Budaiwi confirmed that the long-anticipated single-entry visa for the Gulf is moving ahead, with all six member states actively working to bring it to life. The GCC Unified Tourist Visa, which will officially be named 'GCC Grand Tours', will allow freedom of movement between residents in six countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait. As visa-free travel is possible for citizens of GCC countries, it's thought that the new visa will apply to the millions of non-nationals living in the region. This will also allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the GCC. Plans for the new GCC Unified Tourist Visa were officially approved late in 2023 following a unanimous vote by ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council at a meeting in Oman. The visa is aimed at encouraging tourism within the region and growing each nation's tourist economy. Current rules for intra-regional GCC travel from the UAE UAE citizens do not need a visa to enter Saudi Arabia and can stay for up to 90 days but people just living in UAE do require a visa. In Bahrain, it's a similar story as UAE natives don't require a visa to enter but passport holders of other countries who reside in the UAE need either an eVisa or a Bahrain on-arrival visa. Credit: Supplied Oman is open to UAE citizens without the need for a visa but residents in the GCC currently need to be on a list of approved professions or be accompanied by someone who is in order to get an unsponsored visa. Citizens of GCC countries can enter Kuwait without a visa by presenting a valid GCC ID card but those who are non-nationals will need an eVisa or visa-on-arrival. Qatar allows citizens of more than 100 countries to enter visa-free including those from the UAE. Lengths of stay vary and conditions will be different depending on your nationality. And, people travelling to the UAE from other GCC countries are allowed entry for a period of no longer than 30 days, which can only be extended once with an eVisa. When the date for the new unified tourist visa is confirmed, we'll have all the details you need to know to prepare yourself. What do you need for a GCC Unified Tourist Visa? Officials also say the visa will offer better value – meaning fewer application fees and a simplified process. Likely documents you'll need: While exact requirements may differ depending on your nationality, here's a general idea of what to prepare: A valid passport (with at least six months left) Online application form Recent passport photo Hotel bookings or an invitation letter Travel insurance with medical coverage Proof of funds (like a bank statement) Return or onward travel ticket How to apply Once launched, the visa application process is expected to go fully digital. Here's how it'll likely work: Visit the official visa portal (to be announced) Choose between single or multi-country access Upload documents and travel details Pay the visa fee securely online Receive your e-visa via email No queues. No embassies. No paperwork chaos. It has previously been hinted by the UAE Minister of Economy Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri that the visa will apply to residents within the GCC rather than just passport holders. In November 2023 he said: 'Hopefully, we are going to see something around a pan-GCC visa which will allow easier mobility of people within the GCC. 'A resident of Saudi, for instance, can enter the UAE and vice versa. I think that's where we see the future of GCC tourism.' This would be yet another addition to the list of things you can do with your Emirates ID. What will the GCC Unified Tourist Visa mean for UAE? While the UAE is arguably the best prepared of the six GCC nations to welcome large swathes of tourists, the country is going to make some changes to make travelling easier. For visitors to the UAE, the Emirates Tourism Council say they are working on a tourist route within the country which will interconnect the seven emirates. Infrastructure projects such as the Etihad Rail passenger train should make travel around the UAE easier (Credit: WAM) The new Etihad Rail passenger train set to start operations between Abu Dhabi and Dubai later this year should also make travel around the country much easier. New major roads around Dubai, the UAE's most populated city, will eventually make things easier too. AD Ports Group, Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group to establish automotive logistics ecosystem

AD Ports Group and Zhejiang Provincial Seaport Investment & Operation Group Co., Ltd. (Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group), one of China's largest and most dynamic port operators, have entered into a preliminary strategic agreement to establish a comprehensive automotive logistics ecosystem connecting Chinese manufacturing capabilities with Middle Eastern, Central Asian, and African markets through integrated terminal operations, dedicated fleet services, and multimodal transport solutions. The agreement was signed by Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group, and Tao Chengbo, Chairman of Zhejiang Provincial Seaport Investment & Operation Group Co. Ltd, at a ceremony marking the maiden voyage of UGR Zakher, the second LNG-powered vessel operated by United Global Ro-Ro (UGR), a Joint Venture formed between AD Ports Group and Erkport. Leveraging the established automotive sourcing of Ningbo Zhoushan Port and distribution capabilities of UGR and responding to the growing demand for vehicle exports from China, the agreement outlines plans to reciprocatively develop Ro-Ro and automotive terminals at Ningbo Zhoushan Port and AD Ports Group's hub locations. Enhancements considered under this agreement include accommodating larger vessels, increasing vehicle handling capacity and reducing turnaround times at the ports. These improvements aim to boost operational efficiency while delivering world-class performance standards and customer service. Plans include using UGR as the designated Ro-Ro carrier, which has a specialised PCTC and Ro-Ro vessel fleet and the operational expertise. UGR already operates Ro-Ro services connecting China with terminals in the Middle East, Asia and the Mediterranean. Al Shamisi said this preliminary strategic partnership marks a defining moment in both sides' efforts to establish smart, connected automotive corridors across continents. 'With our fleet and global experience in the Ro-Ro segment complemented by UGR's operations, we offer immediate vessel availability and operational excellence,' he stated. He added, 'With the introduction of our second LNG-powered vessel in the UGR fleet, it not only increases cargo capacity for our customers but also demonstrates our commitment to investing in a fleet that supports global decarbonisation. The continued expansion of our Ro-Ro operations is a key element of our growth strategy, particularly as demand for automobile exports from China continues to rise; we are also excited at the possibility of seamless multimodal connectivity by integrating the Middle Corridor's rail and maritime routes.' Chengbo stated, 'Ningbo Zhoushan Port, a key deep-water port in China, ranks first globally in cargo throughput and serves as a vital hub for world trade. The maiden voyage of the new UGR ship, UGR Zakher, at Ningbo Zhoushan Port marks a new phase in our strategic partnership with AD Ports Group. Leveraging the cooperation in car roll-on/roll-off services, we will further expand our business areas, enhance comprehensive cooperation in logistics, warehousing, green energy, and talent exchange, and inject strong momentum into the coordinated development of the China-Arab Economic Corridor. Moving forward, Ningbo Zhoushan Port will continue to embrace the principles of openness and cooperation, continuously improve its service functions, strengthen cooperation with ports along the Belt and Road Initiative, and contribute more to building a more open and inclusive global economic landscape.' UGR Zakher, with a capacity of 7,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs), mirrors the attributes of sister ship, UGR Al Samha, which was acquired earlier this year. Together, the two vessels boast the same lower greenhouse gas emissions thanks to the use of LNG, alongside improved energy and operational efficiencies. Technology integration will also be considered as per the agreement, including comprehensive digital platforms providing real-time visibility, predictive analytics, and automated coordination capabilities to enhance operational performance while reducing complexity and manual intervention. In addition, the partners will explore synergies between sea and inland rail routes to create a comprehensive multimodal transport network through the Middle Corridor and offer alternative routing options for China-Central Asia-Europe trade flows.
