Trump in Abu Dhabi to wrap up Gulf tour focused on business deals - Region
The UAE capital is the final stop of Trump's high-profile visit, which has already taken him to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Throughout the tour, the US president has sought to secure multibillion-dollar deals, particularly in aviation, defence, and emerging technologies.
Trump's arrival in Abu Dhabi comes as the UAE positions itself as a regional leader in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies, areas he is eager to tap into for American business interests.
A handout photo released by the UAE Presidential Court showed Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan greeting Trump at the presidential terminal in Abu Dhabi.
Earlier in the week, Trump hailed a $200bn deal with Qatar for Boeing aircraft and praised Saudi Arabia for pledging $600bn in investments, which include one of the largest-ever US arms sales.
However, the tour has also raised concerns back home.
Qatar's offer of a luxury jet for Trump's use—both for official and personal purposes—has sparked criticism from Democratic rivals, who have labelled the gesture a clear conflict of interest. Trump, however, has not shied away from seeking Gulf investment, framing the deals as vital for US job creation and economic growth.
Speaking in Riyadh earlier, Trump took aim at both Democrats and the traditional wing of his own party, which had long supported military interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
'The gleaming marvels of Riyadh and Abu Dhabi were not created by the so-called 'nation-builders', 'neocons' or 'liberal non-profits', like those who spent trillions failing to develop Kabul and Baghdad,' Trump remarked.
'Instead, the birth of a modern Middle East has been brought about by the people of the region themselves. In the end, the so-called 'nation-builders' wrecked far more nations than they built.'
Trump also announced the lifting of US sanctions on Syria, a long-standing request from Riyadh following the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
In a notable meeting in Riyadh, Trump sat down with Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Islamist guerrilla once on the US wanted list, now a businessman.
Dressed in a Western suit, al-Sharaa was described by Trump as a 'young, attractive guy'. The meeting was joined by Crown Prince Mohammed and, virtually, by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a key backer of the former Syrian rebels.
As his tour wraps up in the UAE, Trump hinted at the possibility of extending the trip to Turkey if Russian President Vladimir Putin accepts an invitation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold peace talks.
While no confirmation has been given from Moscow, Trump indicated that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would travel to Istanbul regardless to support the discussions.

The Panelists in their separate, but equally impactful presentations, condemned Indian occupation Forces' unabated state oppression on innocent Kashmiris, human rights violations, and questioned the malafide conviction and sentencing of Kashmiri political leadership and human right activists. They expressed serious concerns at Indian government's anti-Kashmiri and anti-Muslim policies, attempts to change the demography of the occupied territory by unilaterally and illegally changing the autonomous status of the region on 5 August 2019, and urged the international community to play a role in facilitating a just and peaceful solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UNSC resolution and the wishes of the Kashmiri people. The speakers especially lauded the Pakistan civilian and military leadership for demonstrating mature, befitting and illustrious response to the unprovoked Indian aggression against Pakistan during Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos. The speakers also admired the timely intervention by the international community, particularly the central role of US President Donald Trump in avoiding a catastrophe of epic proportions during war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Ambassador Aamir Shouket in his remarks underscored necessity of immediate resolution of the Kashmir dispute to avoid a catastrophic nightmare in South Asia. He stated that Kashmir and Palestine issues have remained unresolved for decades because India and Israel do not want the valiant people of Kashmir and Palestine to find peace. The Ambassador stated that the participation of varied and notably large gathering of Egyptian brethren today sends a strong message to the oppressed people in IIOJK and Palestine that we are standing behind them morally, politically and diplomatically. The Ambassador noted with satisfaction that Pakistan and Egypt have successfully defeated the menace of terrorism for the sake of peace, stability and development. The Ambassador concluded his remarks by stating that peace in South Asia and the Middle East will remain elusive till the resolution of the Kashmir and Palestine issues under the relevant UN resolutions and in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of Kashmiris and Palestinians. A large number of intellectuals, journalists, students and Pakistani community members attended the event. Trump Threatens to Raise Pharma Tariffs to 250%
Taarek Refaat President Donald Trump told Squackbox on Tuesday that planned pharmaceutical tariffs imported into the United States could eventually reach 250%, the highest threat to date, according to CNBC. He added that he would initially impose "small tariffs" on medicines, then raise them to 150%, then to 250%, within a year or a year and a half maximum. The president has repeatedly threatened, then changed course on tariff proposals, so there is no guarantee that he will eventually set tariffs on drugs at 250%. In early July, Trump threatened to impose tariffs of 200% on drugs. In April, the Trump administration launched a so-called Article 232 investigation on pharmaceutical products, a legal authority that allows the Commerce Secretary to investigate the impact of imports on national security. The tariffs are an attempt by the president to motivate pharmaceutical companies to move manufacturing operations to the United States at a time when the manufacture of drugs locally has seen a sharp contraction over the past few decades. Over the past six months, companies such as Ellie Lily and Johnson & Johnson have announced new U.S. investments to strengthen their ties with the president. 'We want the pharmaceutical industry in our country,' Trump told CNBC. The planned tariffs will deal a major blow to the pharmaceutical industry, which has warned that tariffs could raise costs, hinder investments in the United States, and disrupt the drug supply chain, putting patients at risk. Pharmaceutical companies are already facing the repercussions of Trump's drug pricing policies, which they argue threaten their profits and their ability to invest in research and development. That includes Trump's executive order in May that revives a controversial plan, a 'most-preferred-country' policy, which aims to reduce drug costs by peging the prices of some drugs in the United States to prices much lower abroad. On Tuesday, Trump told CNBC that he "did" the "most-favoured nation" policy, and that this would have a "huge impact on drug prices." However, Trump has not officially implemented any changes to the executive order. Last week, Trump sent letters to 17 pharmaceutical companies calling on them to commit to taking steps to reduce the prices of US drugs by September 29. Trump says incoming pharma tariff may go as high as 250% - Economy
US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that upcoming tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals could reach 250 percent, after starting at a lower level, while adding he plans to also unveil fresh duties on foreign semiconductors. "We'll be putting (an) initially small tariff on pharmaceuticals, but in one year, one-and-a-half years, maximum, it's going to go to 150 percent," Trump said in an interview on CNBC. "And then it's going to go to 250 percent because we want pharmaceuticals made in our country," he added. In the same interview, Trump said he expects to raise the US tariff on Indian imports "very substantially over the next 24 hours" due to the country's purchases of Russian oil. While Trump has taken aim at products from different countries with varying tariff rates after imposing a 10-percent levy on almost all trading partners in April, these have excluded certain products he planned to target separately. These sector-specific tariffs have generally come after government investigations that look into the national security concerns surrounding certain imports. After earlier embarking on probes on imported semiconductors and pharmaceuticals, the Trump administration has signaled plans to wrap up these studies which could lead to new tariffs. Already, Trump has slapped steep tariffs of 50 percent on imported steel and aluminum, and also rolled out a separate but lower duty on autos and parts.
