A companion of the climber in his 20s made an emergency call to police at around 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, saying his friend had been attacked by a bear and dragged into the woods.
Local police and hunters resumed their search for the missing man early on Friday.
They said at shortly past 9:30 a.m. they discovered what appears to be the missing climber's wallet near where his friend made the emergency call. They added that what seem to be part of a shirt and a wristwatch were also found nearby.
The police said they have had no answer to calls to the missing man's phone, which appears to be switched on.
They plan to continue the search with the help of the phone's GPS.

Japanese police say they have confirmed that the body found on Mount Rausu in Hokkaido is that of a climber who went missing after being attacked by a brown bear. The climber, in his 20s, was reportedly attacked by a bear and dragged into the woods on the mountain in Shari Town, eastern Hokkaido, on Thursday morning. Local police and hunters discovered on Friday morning what appeared to be part of a shirt that the missing climber was wearing and his wallet near where his climbing partner made an emergency call. In the afternoon, hunters shot dead three bears, two of which were cubs. Police say the man's body was found near the adult bear. Police have identified the victim as 26-year-old Sota Keisuke, a company employee from Tokyo's Sumida Ward. A local lab is expected to conduct a DNA test on fur found on the victim to see if it matches the dead bear's.

Secretary of LDP's Hagiuda fined over funds scandal

The Tokyo Summary Court on Friday fined a policy secretary of Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Koichi Hagiuda for violating the political funds control law, amid fallout from the ruling party's political funds scandal. The 46-year-old secretary, Toshifumi Ushikubo, was ordered to pay ¥300,000. The court order came after the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor's Office filed a summary indictment against Ushikubo earlier in the day. The prosecutors had decided not to indict Ushikubo last December, but a prosecution inquest panel determined in June that he should be indicted. According to the summary indictment, Ushikubo failed to report a total of ¥19.52 million between 2020 and 2022. The money was transferred from the LDP's largest faction, once led by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The faction disbanded after the scandal. In a post on X on Friday afternoon, Hagiuda apologized and said he takes the court decision seriously. He added that he had accepted the secretary's resignation. Hagiuda himself faced a criminal complaint, but prosecutors decided not to indict the lawmaker and the inquest panel backed the decision. Accounting officials of the Abe faction and a faction led by former Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai have also received suspended sentences amid the scandal.

Search continues for climber attacked by brown bear in Hokkaido

Rescuers are searching for a climber in his 20s who is missing after an apparent brown bear attack near Mount Rausu in Japan's northern prefecture of Hokkaido. Police and local hunters resumed their efforts at about 5:30 a.m. on Friday. The operation was triggered by an emergency call from a climber at around 11:10 a.m. on Thursday, saying his climbing partner had been attacked by a bear and dragged away. Police say the man was apparently attacked about 20 minutes before the call by the friend who was rescued. He was quoted as saying that he heard his companion calling his name about 200 meters ahead while they were descending the trail. He then saw him trying to fight off a bear. The rescued man added that despite his own efforts to drive it away, the bear dragged his friend off into the woods. Mount Rausu in Shari Town on the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, is a known habitat for brown bears. Rescuers airlifted about 70 climbers who had taken shelter at an observation deck or other locations on the mountain on Thursday. Police are checking for any other people left in the area, based on reports that some climbers had been seen near the summit.
