Fox Sports' Joel Klatt names this 2025 Alabama football opponent as CFP 'party crasher'
Since the Missouri Tigers joined the SEC ahead of the 2012 season, Alabama has gone 5-0 against the Tigers. After posting a 42-10 victory in a heavy downpour at Faurot Field in Missouri's first year as a conference foe, Alabama's average margin of victory against the Tigers has been 28.6 points.
Even amid the ups and downs in coach Kalen DeBoer's first season in Tuscaloosa last year, Alabama had no problem dispatching Missouri with a 34-0 shutout win at Bryant-Denny Stadium a week after their 24-17 loss at Neyland Stadium to Tennessee.
Despite being unranked in the preseason top 25 polls, Missouri was arguably the quietest 10-win program in Power Four in 2024. The Tigers reached double digits in wins after closing the season with a 27-24 victory over Iowa in the Music City Bowl. That came 12 months after defeating Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl to cap an 11-2 season.
Could coach Eli Drinkwitz's team take it a step further and reach the 2025 College Football Playoff? At least one prominent analyst believes so. On the Thursday edition of "The Joel Klatt Show: A College Football Podcast," the Fox Sports commentator tabbed Missouri as one of four CFP "party crashers" in 2025.
In Klatt's view, Missouri gets the preseason nod over Oklahoma and Auburn as the SEC team that could "come out of nowhere" to snag an at-large spot in the playoff.
"They have been highly successful over the last couple of years," Klatt said of Missouri. "They've recruited well. Drinkwitz has a culture at Missouri, and I'm a fan of Beau Pribula. I know that they haven't settled on a quarterback yet, but I saw him at Penn State last year. Hard for them to keep him off the field at Penn State."
Pribula was the Nittany Lions' backup who entered the transfer portal with his team set to compete in the College Football Playoff last year. Klatt called Pribula's decision to leave Penn State as Drew Allar's backup a "difficult decision" made by "the stupid transfer rules."
Nevertheless, Klatt is high on Pribula and loves the momentum of Missouri's back-to-back 10-win seasons, the Tigers' defense, and most of all their schedule.
"They hit the schedule lottery in the SEC," Klatt said before pointing out that Missouri's conference slate doesn't include games against preseason No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Georgia, No. 9 LSU, No. 15 Ole Miss, No. 17 Florida and No. 18 Tennessee.
Missouri opens its season with six consecutive home games, including a matchup against Alabama on Oct. 11 at Faurot Field.
"Guys, watch out for Missouri this year," Klatt said before asking, "Can you beat either Alabama or South Carolina, and then definitely beat A&M on your home field? If they can do that, then I think Missouri has a great chance to be a party crasher."
Alabama vs. Missouri is scheduled for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff on Oct. 11. The game will be televised on either ABC or ESPN.

Alabama, ranked No. 8 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 poll, opens the 2025 season against the Florida State Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on Aug. 30. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised on ABC. Florida State is unranked in either poll.

Chargers' Quentin Johnston suffers concussion on hard hit from Rams defensive back
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Quentin Johnston left Saturday's preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams after a hard hit left him with a concussion. Johnston was tracking a ball from Justin Herbert down the sideline in the first quarter when Rams safety Tanner Ingle delivered a huge hit. It was the third snap of the Chargers' first series. The wide receiver landed on his back with both of his arms outstretched. He was motionless for several moments before medical trainers came over to check on him. "Quentin suffered a concussion, and that's never a good thing," Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said. "But the way it looked there at the time, looked like it could have a been a lot worse. And he was taken (to a hospital) for more evaluation, but he was talking. He remembered the play. He was moving good. So in that way, it's a good thing." Los Angeles selected Johnston out of TCU with the No. 21 overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. The 2024 season, Johnston's second, was the best of his career so far. He had 55 catches for 711 yards and eight touchdown catches. He was competing for the starting job for the Chargers. He was No. 2 on the depth chart behind Keenan Allen, Tre Harris and Ladd McConkey. It's unclear how long he'll be out.

Cardinals place Victor Scott II on IL, select Nathan Church as lineup takes another hit
The St. Louis Cardinals placed centerfielder Victor Scott II on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain before Sunday's game against the New York Yankees. Scott suffered the injury in the third inning of Saturday's 12-8 loss to New York when he scaled the outfield wall in an attempt to rob a solo home run from Aaron Judge. He remained on the ground for several minutes, but stayed in the game after a lengthy visit from head trainer Adam Olsen and manager Oli Marmol. Scott played the next three innings in apparent discomfort and was removed from the game in the bottom of the sixth. Advertisement Outfielder Nathan Church was selected from Triple-A Memphis as the corresponding move. Church, 25, has played 53 of his 86 games this season with Memphis and is hitting .335 with a .921 OPS, 11 doubles and seven home runs. He can play all three outfield positions, but the Cardinals plan to use him predominantly in center. The Cardinals' 40-man roster now stands at 38. Church went 2 for 4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in Memphis' 11-10 win over Charlotte on Saturday. He will be in the Cardinals' starting lineup Sunday, making his major-league debut. St. Louis has played eight of its nine games this homestand short-handed, including in both of their losses to the Yankees on Friday and Saturday. All-Star infielder Brendan Donovan has not played since Friday due to a nagging injury in his toe after missing two full games last weekend with left groin tightness. Donovan was in Friday's original starting lineup, leading off and batting second, but was a late scratch a couple of hours before first pitch. The Cardinals are still hopeful Donovan will be able to avoid the IL, but he won't be available for at least the next few games. Donovan explained earlier in the week that the left toe injury he sustained in June was contributing to lingering tightness throughout his left leg. He missed several games in mid-June after spraining a capsule in his left toe — an injury also commonly referred to as turf toe. He was able to avoid the injured list, but said Monday night after delivering a game-winning double off the bench that trying to compensate for the toe pain has had a corresponding effect on other areas. Advertisement 'It all stems back to the toe,' Donovan said. 'When your feet, the thing that contacts the ground, get banged up, it tends to go up the chain. That's what caused (the groin pain). We thought it'd be smart to take a couple of days because it has been bugging for a little bit.' The team has also been without Willson Contreras since Tuesday, when he sustained a right foot contusion after being hit by a pitch against the Colorado Rockies. Marmol was optimistic Contreras could return to the starting lineup Sunday, or at least be an option off the bench. Lars Nootbaar was also unavailable for the majority of the Rockies series earlier in the week after fouling a ball off his left shin. Nolan Arenado has been sidelined since Aug. 1 with a right shoulder strain. He has started a strength and conditioning program at the Cardinals' spring training complex in Jupiter, Fla., but has not resumed baseball activity. He is expected to meet with the team on Monday, when the Cardinals begin a three-game road series against the Miami Marlins. The lack of available players has severely limited manager Oli Marmol's options. In both Friday and Saturday's games, Marmol had just two players available off the bench — pinch-runner Garrett Hampson and back-up catcher Yohel Pozo. While certainly not ideal, St. Louis would rather play short for a few days than be without Donovan, a key player, for at least 10. 'My goal is to stay away from the IL if possible, even if that means giving (Donovan) the next two to three days off,' Marmol said on Saturday. 'I prefer for him to be down or be short for three days than to have him down for a total of 10.' 'You're making the decision if it makes sense to lose those guys for 10 days or if you're better off playing short based on who would come up and how you would use that body. We feel at the moment — and this could change — that giving him three days and staying away from the IL gives us the best chance after those three days are up.' Advertisement Scott's injury forced the Cardinals to change their stance. The 24-year-old has been one of the team's most durable players, appearing in 116 games with the majority coming as the starting center fielder. He has struggled to produce offensively in his first full major-league season — Scott is hitting .223 with a .623 OPS — but has made strides defensively, leaving the team optimistic about his future.
