Singer Ethel Cain admits she is 'not proud' of disturbing posts after backlash

Metro10-07-2025
Ethel Cain has posted a lengthy message after a slew of disturbing posts emerged, including her wearing a t-shirt which said 'legalise incest' on it.
Screenshots began circulating, said to be shared by the 27-year-old singer in 2017 and 2018, featuring offensive language and alleged child pornography.
Another image that Cain is accused of drawing and sharing on the site Curious Cats, parodied a missing persons poster for a nine-year-old girl who was murdered.
Initially shared by X account Herweirdsilas, posting under the name 'Exposing', the questionable content quickly gained traction.
After a few days of the images circulating Cain, whose real name is Hayden Silas Anhedönia, addressed the controversy via a Google Doc, admitting to the posts.
She wrote that at 19 – during the time of the posts – she had 'fallen into a subculture online that prioritised garnering attention at all costs'.
The American Teenager singer added: '[I] intended to be as inflammatory and controversial as possible. I would have said (and usually did say) anything, about anyone, to gain attention and ultimately just make my friends laugh.'
Addressing her use of the N-word directly, Cain continued: 'At the end of the day I am white, so while I can take accountability for my actions, there's no way for me to fully understand the way it feels to be on the receiving end of them.
'All I can say is that I am truly sorry from the bottom of my heart, to anyone who read it then and to anyone reading it now. Any way you feel about me moving forward is valid.'
In her statement – which can be found here – Cain directly addresses each post, including the incest t-shirt, which she clarifies was 'never sold as merch'.
'Regarding the topic of incest in my artwork, it's a layered experience,' she wrote. 'I have always been interested in creating art centered around the taboo.
'Rather, as a lonely and confused child I had my own complicated personal struggles with the concept during puberty (in a hypothetical manner, not involving anyone in my actual family). I have since untangled these feelings and I now understand their root.
'While sometimes the topic of incest may get intermingled on a song with my own experiences of sexual abuse or my own familial traumas, I have never and would never fetishise such a sensitive subject.'
She said she was 'not proud of her actions' and has tried to 'bury' this past in order to move forward with her life.
However, even if she looks back 'shamefully' at the time, Cain stated the resurfacing of her posts is 'not the actions of a well-meaning individual'.
'These are screenshots obtained through extensive digging, hacking and cooperative effort amongst a group of individuals who do not care who else is hurt by witnessing this media as long as I am ultimately hurt the worst in the end,' she accused.
Cain, a transwoman, called this a 'targeted smear campaign' against her and urged fans to 'recognise the patterns of transphobia'.
'To try and sum everything up, no I am not a violent misogynist fetishising the 'female experience',' she wrote. 'No I am not the creator of child pornography, nor am I a pedophile, a zoophile, or a porn-addicted incest fetishist. More Trending
'This information was hoarded until the perfect moment arose to unleash it. In this case, a baseless attempt to assassinate my boyfriend's character became the catalyst.
'He will address these claims in his own time on his own terms and I support him wholeheartedly. This entire situation is negligent, sensationalised, and extremely dangerous, not only for myself but for all my loved ones.'
Cain's posts were made around the time of her early EP releases. She has since gone on to release three studio recordings – the latest of which is due out in August.
Her previous album Preacher's Daughter and January 2025 release Perverts both saw moderate chart success in the US and UK.

Emmerdale confirms unexpected new love interest for Belle after Tom King saga

Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor Draper) has been through hell and back in Emmerdale thanks to her thug of an ex Tom (James Chase) but right now, you'd never know it. She recently demonstrated her regained control and her regained fight when standing up to brother Cain (Jeff Hordley) as he tried to take on Sam. 'You're going to beat him like Tom and then he's going to respect you?' Mic drop for Belle Dingle right there. Cain was left gobsmacked. Belle being back in a good headspace means she's moving on, which also means she's ready to open herself up to romance once again. As she prepares to dip her toe back in the dating pool she chats to Nicola (Nicola Wheeler) who, having been there through the Tom saga and still feeling guilty about it, actively encourages her to jump back in. Belle loads up the dating apps and Nicola can't help but get involved, grabbing the phone for a good swipe. More Trending When Belle later bumps into Kammy (Shebz Miah), she confesses it was Nicola who connected them, leaving Kammy brave-facing it but secretly gutted. Cain, who has become weirdly intuitive these days, senses there's more there than an accidental swipe. He's not encouraging though, instead, he gives Kammy a talking to about backing off. Belle is mortified but tells Cain she has no interest anyway. But Lydia (Karen Blick) is also intuitive in a much more supportive way, and senses that Belle is protesting a bit too much. View More » She has a word with the young Dingle and encourages her to pursue the match. Forgetting that Kammy was once sleeping with Belle's great niece, could this be the latest greatest romance to hit the village? Tilda Swinton attends Fringe play at Easter Road

The Oscar winning 64-year-old screen icon stunned fans when she appeared at Hibernian FC's Easter Road stadium to catch the hot-ticket play 'Dropped', a gritty one-man show about the brutal truth behind the football academy system. Swinton, known for roles in Michael Clayton and The Chronicles of Narnia, arrived with five guests and had front-row seats reserved at the club's Behind The Goals venue, located in the North Stand of the stadium. Eyewitnesses say the actress appeared relaxed and engaged throughout the powerful 60-minute performance, which left many in the packed venue visibly emotional. Written and performed by former Chelsea FC trainee Alfie Cain, Dropped delves into the stark reality facing thousands of young football hopefuls — just one per cent of academy players go pro, and the rest are left shattered, with little support and no back-up plan. The show has already been dubbed a 'must-see' at the Edinburgh Festival, not least because it marks the first time a professional football club has hosted a theatrical performance as part of the Fringe. It runs from 2–9 August, but demand for tickets has been so strong, they are likely to extend the run. Speaking after the show, Cain explained: 'At this time of year around 4,000 trainees will be dropped across the UK. Many of them have spent nine years or more working towards one goal, only to be told in a brief conversation that their dream is over. The mental toll is devastating.' The play doesn't shy away from the darker aspects of football academy life, including mental, physical and even sexual abuse, as well as the crushing aftermath when players are released. In 2020, 18-year-old Manchester City trainee Jeremy Wisten tragically took his own life after being let go — a chilling reminder of what's at stake. For Cain, who now works as an actor after graduating from LAMDA and appearing in EastEnders, the story is deeply personal. 'From the age of nine to 18, football was my entire life. I was told to clear my locker in nine minutes after nine years of total dedication. I had no idea who I was without the game,' he said. But it's not all despair — Dropped is also a call to action. In a bold move, Scottish Premiership side Hibernian FC chose to host the play at their stadium as part of a wider campaign to support academy players' mental wellbeing. A club spokesperson said: 'Hosting 'Dropped' is a statement of our commitment to player welfare beyond the pitch. We aim to prepare our young athletes for life — not just football.' The club now runs educational programmes to help young players understand their slim chances of making it pro, and how to develop alternative futures. Cain called the collaboration a 'dream come true' and praised Hibs for 'embracing this message when so many clubs choose to ignore it.' 'When I was a kid, I dreamed of playing at Easter Road. Now, I get to perform there instead — maybe not how I imagined, but it's incredible nonetheless.' With powerful word of mouth and growing celebrity attention, Dropped is fast becoming one of the breakout hits of this year's Fringe — offering a sobering but essential look at the dark side of the beautiful game. Haunted Belle drops a bombshell that crushes Emmerdale's Cain in showdown

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) was delivered some harsh home truths by siblings Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) and Sam Dingle (James Hooton) in this evening's episode of Emmerdale. This week, a rift has formed between Cain and Sam and it ultimately started because of one man – Joe Tate (Ned Porteous). Joe was accused of organising the break-in at Butlers Farm at the start of the week. Cain and Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) made this assumption because of how determined Joe has been to get Moira's land as part of Kim Tate's (Claire King) grand plan. At Home Farm, Moira confronted Joe, but he said his plans never involve putting children in danger. Moira didn't believe Joe and went to hit him, but Lydia Dingle (Karen Blick) got in the way. As Moira was taken to the police station, Cain found Lydia and told her that she must lie if she is questioned about the attack. Lydia seemed reluctant to do this but as far as Cain was concerned, he wasn't asking her – he was telling her. Cain's behaviour towards Lydia obviously angered Sam a great deal. In the pub, Cain grew frustrated to hear Sam talk about the Tates. He told his brother to pick a side – and it wasn't going to be the Dingles. In this evening's episode, Moira told Cain to sort things out with Sam. There's was some reluctancy, but he chose to head to Wishing Well to try and talk to his sibling. When Cain got there though, he grew annoyed to find Joe sitting in one of their chairs. Joe had arrived a few moments prior to play good cop again and made an effort to ask Lydia about her injury, and reassure her and Sam that he thinks of them as more than just Home Farm employees. Unfortunately, any hopes of sorting out the feud got destroyed as soon as Cain saw a Tate in the Dingle home. Even the notion! Sam mentioned that Joe had asked him to sort a few more jobs, and Cain told him that wouldn't be happening. He then spoke about being head of the family, and believed his relatives should do as he asked. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? Sam thought that following Zak's (Steve Halliwell) death, the Dingles had been anything but a strong and loyal unit. He then delivered a pretty low blow by reminding Cain that Nate (Jurell Carter) was murdered shortly after he disowned him. More Trending He was doing so well with not reacting to something with violence but this comment made Cain lunge towards Sam. He was stopped by Belle, who told her brother that he's never going to change. 'Sam's right, you're a bully', she said. Ouch.
