Amazon Prime fans beat the heat and binge ‘best sci-fi series in years'
Ascension, which first aired in 2014 with six 45-minute episodes, has shot up the rankings on the streaming platform in recent weeks.
The synopsis on Prime reads: 'In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world.
'Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship's population to question the true nature of their mission.'
Despite having just a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Ascension has delighted fans, with more people discovering the show in the years since it aired.
'One of the very best Sci-Fi shows I've seen in years. Every episode changes what you think is going on and reveals another layer,' wrote James Newton in a Google review.

He added: 'It does veer into fantasy a bit at the end, and possibly religion (but not in the traditional sense) but the bulk of the show is so good, it more than makes up for the ending.'
Another user, ömer ünal, compared it to The Truman Show, insisting while there were some 'good sociology ideas', they 'probably wouldn't have worked out that way'.
They added: 'Vintage look is awesome. Acting… not good in total, but most series are that way anyway. Should have had a second season. I liked it.'
Plenty of fans complained that the show ended without a satisfying ending, with Brian Schmidt warning in his Google review: 'Be careful… don't be like me and not know that they did not finish the series.
'It is a show that grabs your attention, and each episode leaves you wanting the next. The idea and premise of the show is very interesting. Again, be careful if you start, you won't stop until there is no more and you will be wanting more!'
User Chris Hanna praised the show as a 'great series', however, but said they were 'very sad' there was only six episodes, given the 'interesting' subplots, adding: 'Great to watch… when you just want to vedge. (sic)'
Another fan, with the username Just Me, was furious at being 'left hanging', as they urged someone to give the show new life.
'I think they should bring it back and at least finish out the series. Give us an ending,' they said. 'We need answers. So many shows have just stopped and left us all hanging in mid air.'
Sadly, in 2015 SyFy made it clear they would not be making any more new episodes.
They said at the time: 'We were very happy with Ascension as an event series, but with so much high profile development in the works, we have decided not to pursue a full series.' More Trending

Clarkson's Farm star forced to call 999 during heatwave over fire risk
Clarkson's Farm star forced to call 999 during heatwave over fire risk Kaleb Cooper, who has become famous since appearing on the Amazon Prime show alongside Jeremy Clarkson, took to social media to share the warning Kaleb Cooper, a familiar face from Clarkson's Farm, has criticised individuals for releasing Chinese lanterns into the Cotswolds countryside amid a heatwave. The farming contractor urgently contacted emergency services yesterday upon spotting the lanterns, which are known to pose a significant wildfire risk according to fire services. The Oxfordshire native and breakout star of the show with Jeremy Clarkson took to social media on Saturday (July 12) to voice his concerns. In an Instagram post titled "what is going on in the world" Kaleb shared a video message. Although the video mainly showed a shadowy figure, it included Kaleb speaking directly to the camera, expressing his disbelief: "I can't quite believe what I'm seeing at the moment." He continued, revealing his immediate action: "I've just called this in to 999 but someone has felt the need to light two Chinese lanterns in and around the Chipping Norton area. I'm looking at both of them as we speak right now." Kaleb then questioned the rationale behind such actions during dangerous weather conditions: "But what goes through someone's mind when they decide to light two Chinese lanterns in the middle of a heatwave. "We've hardly had any rain since March. Jesus, honestly. What's going on with the world," reports Gloucestershire Live. His followers quickly echoed his sentiments in the comments section. Kaleb stars alongside Jeremy Clarkson in Clarkson's Farm (Image: Amazon Prime Video ) One follower emphasised the need for awareness: "People need educating mate. Spread the message." Another supporter agreed with Kaleb's warning: "Well said Kaleb, this could quite easily start a wild fire." A third individual expressed concern saying: "Some people really don't have a clue. The farmer's field next to mine is that dry I can literally put my whole hand down the cracks of the soil." Meanwhile, another added their voice to the chorus of concerns: "They should never do this for any celebration. They let some of these off for a wedding near me. They set fire to someone's house and barn when they landed. Plus livestock can ingest them when they land. It's like balloon releases. It's littering, pure and simple. Should be banned." Kaleb was praised by his followers for his actions (Image:) On its website, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service offers advice about sky lanterns, describing them: "Sky lanterns are a beautiful sight - but the potential damage they can cause is significant. "They use the heat of a naked flame to float. They're not only a fire hazard but also a danger to livestock, agriculture, camping activities, thatched properties and hazardous material sites. "Whilst ignition and launch are mostly in the control of the user, the actual flight path and end destination are not. There's no guarantee the fuel cell will be completely out and cooled when the lantern lands, so any contact with a flammable surface could start a fire. "There's evidence of them causing fires, wasting police time, being mistaken for distress flares, misleading aircraft and killing livestock." Mick, who is in prison following his murder of PC Craig Tinker (Colson Smith), is upset by news from his family. With Lou (Farrel Hegarty) in serious trouble, there's a risk that the family will fall apart. Mick knows he's got to do something and desperately enlists the help of his son, Brody (Ryan Mulvey). He wants Brody to round up his sisters and the plan is that Mick will escape from prison and join them and the whole family will go on the run. Brody, who's recently found out that Mick isn't his biological father, is still keen to impress the man who raised him and he agrees to the plan. Brody goes off to pick up the girls, who are staying with Sally (Sally Dynevor) and Tim (Joe Duttine), only to find that Joanie (Savanna Pennington) has gone to Weatherfield High for a taster day. She's not having a great time as some of the other kids are having a go at her because of her infamous dad. She gets upset and the school staff call Sally and get her to come and pick her up. Meanwhile Lou is being questioned by the police after Mick has broken out of prison. She denies all knowledge. Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) is at the school for an interview, and he and Mrs Crawshaw (Carla Mendonça) are shocked when they're suddenly confronted by Mick, demanding to see his daughter. I'm a film writer and want four things from Superman sequel
The latest iteration of Superman is currently soaring to success in cinemas. James Gunn's reboot of both the Man of Steel and the DC cinematic universe has begun on a largely positive note. A bumper weekend with more than $120 million in takings at the worldwide box office, paired with an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes should have fans excited for the future. Naturally that should include sequels, spin-offs and significantly more crossovers, the likes of which was teased in the new film. As a film writer, I made sure to go and see the release for myself at the earliest opportunity. Having been down on DC's more recent output, I was pleasantly surprised and already looking forward to what is next. So here are X things that I would like to see from a Superman sequel. Note, these are wishes for a straight Superman follow up, Justice League style crossovers or spin-offs do not count. James Gunn has spoken out about his decision to not include the tired origin story of Superman in the new film. He put forward, rightly so, that audiences have seen it too many times and don't need to retread those plot points again. The same seems to be said for the role of his adoptive human parents. Ma and Pa Kent still play a crucial role in the film. However, neither of them needed to die for it to happen. Like Batman's origin story, we usually have to suffer the death of Kent senior, perhaps with Superman's failure to save him (looking at you Man of Steel) to somehow propel him to be the hero he is. Not so for Gunn's Superman. Their existence is enough for that. It would be a welcome change if Gunn continues this for at least another movie. Superman has already achieved a significant character moment without losing one of his parents. If it is to happen in the future, maybe make it off screen between movies. Edi Gathegi's turn as Mr Terrific is a standout for the film. Despite some criticism of too many characters to keep tabs on, I didn't feel that was the case at all. This was no Suicide Squad. Each of the extra characters - or Metahumans that were chosen to make an appearance brought something to the table. The perfect example of that was Mr Terrific. Perhaps one of the lesser known characters from the comics, which the film was cheekily aware of. However, he played an essential role without taking away the spotlight. It would be great to see Gunn repeat this trick. Bring another lesser known character into the spotlight Perhaps it could be a version of a character that starts as a potential ally but soon threatens to become a dangerous foe? Speaking of Edi Gathegi, one of the best action sequences of the entire film sees his character take on a camp of soldiers to the tune of Noah and the Whale's 5 Years Time, while Lois Lane watches on from the safety of an energy shield. It is trademark James Gunn. However, it was a shame we didn't get the same for Superman. Early on we find out that Lex Luthor has successfully analysed Superman's battles enough to know what moves to choose when, in order to beat him. As a result, we rarely see him really flex his moves or show off his style. Perhaps it is something we could be treated to in an opening sequence for a sequel. Gunn did a similar thing for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The team was assembled for the follow up, and fans got to see them play out their roles to the catchy soundtrack of Mr. Blue Sky. The appearance of Milly Alcock's Supergirl ahead of her standalone film was a surprise. Although she doesn't stick around much, there's no need for such big cameos next time around. While it was great to have the few members of the Justice Gang hanging about, Gunn and the new DC studios need to avoid repeating past mistakes. Previous movies that brought Batman and Superman together felt too rushed. No one has any idea who will even be the Batman in this new DCU. It's almost certainly not Robert Pattinson, whose films are being treated as a separate universe referred to as Elseworlds. Marvel took four years to bring the Avengers together but that was with a clear path. DC Studios don't seem to have a concrete plan for the new Justice League so there is no need to get ahead of ourselves. Especially not when we can enjoy Superman movies again.
