Notre Dame still hasn't settled on starting quarterback

USA Today05-04-2025

Notre Dame still hasn't settled on starting quarterback The Fighting Irish have multiple players vying for the 2025 starting quarterback job, and no one has grabbed the reins yet.
Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is in no rush to name next year's starting quarterback.
The Fighting Irish coach said that when there's a clear starter, the team will name one, and he's not sure when that will be.
That could interpreted in both good ways and bad by Notre Dame fans. The positive interpretation is that the potential starting QBs -- Steve Angeli, CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey are considered the top contenders, though Anthony Rezac and Blake Hebert can't be ruled out -- are all playing equally well and forcing the coaches to make a tough choice. The negative interpretation is that the quarterbacks are all struggling and none have stood out as a potential starter.
Of course, there's a difference between fans' worries and hopes and what's actually happening on the practice field, and we'd also note that Angeli has game experience and has looked good during some of his appearances. He's a veteran, so that may give him a leg up.
The point is, though, that no one has yet given Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, and other coaches the sign that they're the clear number one. And the coaching staff seems ready to let things play out organically rather than forcing the issue.

Texas A&M's four-star 2026 commit inks NIL deal with Adidas brand ahead of senior season

BREAKING 🚨adidas has signed six top high school football athletes to NIL endorsement deals ✍️𝗔𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲:- Tristen Keys (No. 1 WR, LSU commit)- Tyler Atkinson (No. 1 LB)- Chris Henry Jr. (No. 3 WR, Ohio State commit)- Calvin Russell (No. 5 WR)… In the name, image and likeness (NIL) era of collegiate athletics, multiple Texas A&M football stars are cashing in on opportunities provided by massive companies to represent their respective brands or companies. Even though 2026 commit Madden Williams has yet to suit up in the Maroon and White on Saturdays, he has reportedly inked a deal with Adidas ahead of his senior high school campaign. The four-star wideout from Bellflower, California, is one of six top high school football athletes to sign endorsement deals with the brand. With Texas A&M also repping Adidas as the official sponsor of Aggies athletics, one of the program's highly-touted recruits is fitting right in as he prepares to play under the lights of Kyle Field in College Station in 2026. Williams is not the only player capitalizing on endorsements, however. Sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed recently put pen to paper on a deal with private jet company ENG Aviation Group, and North Carolina State wide receiver transfer KC Concepcion has reportedly received $2.5 million from companies like Call of Duty, Topps and Fanatics. The St. John Bosco High School standout ranks as the No. 39 wide receiver and No. 27 prospect in the state of California, per 247 Sports Recruiting Rankings. His route-running ability, quick release off the ball and acceleration are attributes that contributed to schools like Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State and Texas offering him to come play for their respective football programs. When it came down to it, Williams chose the Aggies and joined a stacked 2026 class that currently ranks No. 3 in the country, according to On3 Sports and 247 Sports. During his junior year in 2025, he hauled in 50 receptions for 851 yards and 13 touchdowns, which nearly doubled his production for St. John Bosco as a sophomore. If this trend continues, Williams has the potential to become the next big Aggie star at wide receiver. Ravens' coach praises offseason improvement of former UNC star receiver

In one year at North Carolina, under Mack Brown, Devontez Walker totaled 41 receptions for 699 yards and seven touchdowns in eight games after fighting a transfer issue with the NCAA. After making his way to the NFL and being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, Walker struggled to see the field at all. Through his second offseason in the league, Walker not only has himself surprised and feeling back to his college-day speed, but the team's head coach is taking notice of the revamped wide receiver as well. Advertisement According to Ryan Mink, the editorial director of the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh had this to say about Walker: "Every day, all he does is show up and go 100 miles an hour. He's got a chance to be really good." Walker himself has been surprised with some of the improvements he has seen. The turn for him started with a touchdown last season. Walker had this to say about that play: I think that touchdown meant a lot, especially to the staff. You know, drafting a guy you believe in and finally get out there and showcase it. I think it kind of turned heads a little bit. It was a real big deal for me." Walker continued in his statement post training camp to talk about those improvements: Advertisement "Last year, early on, I felt like I wasn't able to play as fast. You know, I'm wondering what to do. I'm thinking so much, trying to do everything right, perfect everything. I wasn't able to go out there and run full speed. This year, I'm able to get lined up and go out there and play as fast as possible. I feel really confident. I know what we're trying to get done in this offense, and I'm able to go out there and play full speed." In his rookie season with the Ravens, Walker appeared in nine games. He ended up grabbing one of three targets for the previously mentioned 21-yard touchdown. Despite Baltimore still having Zay Flowers and Rashad Bateman and adding DeAndre Hopkins, Walker will still try to carve out a role where he can shine. Former UNC football star praised by ESPN, his OC ahead of rookie NFL season

Ashton Jeanty stole headlines over the past two college football seasons, but right behind him was another star-studded running back in Chapel Hill: Omarion Hampton. Starting 2023 behind British Brooks on UNC's depth chart, Hampton became the full-time starter by Week 3. Hampton formed a deadly offensive duo with Drake Maye during 2023, forcing opposing defenses to choose how they'd slow the Tar Heel stars down, then Hampton became the feature of North Carolina's offense in 2024. Advertisement With a distinguished college career that included 3,565 rushing yards 36 rushing touchdowns, Hampton's NFL suitors quickly took notice. The Los Angeles Chargers selected Hampton with this year's 22nd overall pick, pairing him with offseason acquisition Najee Harris. Through roughly two months of offseason activities, Hampton is proving to be plenty worthy of his draft selection. Check out what ESPN and Hampton's offensive coordinator, Greg Roman, said about the rookie back from Chapel Hill: "Hampton has been the talk of the Chargers' offseason activities, for his play on the field and his physical stature," ESPN's Kris Rihm wrote. "At Hampton's introductory news conference, coach Jim Harbaugh jokingly grabbed his 6-foot, 221-pound rookie by the shoulders and said to reporters, "That looks like a football player, right?" "He's the total package," offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "You don't see a lot of guys find a hole like he's doing right now." Advertisement Harris should be LA's Day One starter, rushing for over 1,000 yards in each of his first four NFL seasons, but Hampton could form an unstoppable 1-2 punch with his new backfield mate.
