MrBeast is killing his video thumbnail generator after creators revolted — but it won't stop the AI tide
MrBeast, the world's top YouTuber, is shutting down an AI thumbnail generator he released last week after receiving heavy criticism from the creator community.
The feature allowed users to generate video thumbnails by mimicking aspects of existing video art, including swapping in faces and other modifications.
"You've made something that can steal my (and my artists) hard work without a thought," Twitch and YouTube streamer PointCrow (Eric Morino) wrote on X.
Now, MrBeast is backpedaling. In a video posted Thursday, he said he's killing the AI feature and instead directing users of his Viewstats platform to hire human designers.
"I care more than any of you could ever imagine about the YouTube community," he said. "It deeply makes me sad when I do something that people in the community are upset by."
The backlash to MrBeast's tool shows the tightrope walk that companies must navigate when introducing AI features for creators. There's a fine line between automating work to help influencers save time, and offering shortcuts that creators view as displacing or stealing their work.
AI is coming hard for creators
MrBeast's thumbnail generator is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to disruptive AI tech hitting the creator community. Meta, TikTok, and YouTube are all marching forward with AI tools that will change how videos are made, and what ultimately gets watched. And I'd wager they're going to be less receptive than MrBeast to backlash.
TikTok users can now turn static photos into AI-generated videos, and YouTube is planning to bring its AI video generator tool Veo 3 to Shorts this summer. If Veo 3 is good enough to produce a TV commercial, it's likely to make a big splash on YouTube. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said earlier this month that he's "incredibly excited by the potential of AI tools to empower human creativity."
You'd be hard pressed to find a creator platform that's not getting overrun with AI these days. Pinterest users are finding AI images are taking over their grid, and music streamer Deezer recently revealed that 18% of all new songs uploaded to its platform are fully AI-generated. There's even a wave of startups helping users automate the entire process of creating and uploading videos to TikTok.
Creators can rage against MrBeast, but the biggest players in generative AI are racing ahead. Even as MrBeast has shuttered his short-lived AI thumbnail generator, it's still incredibly easy for creators to generate thumbnails using other AI tools from the likes of OpenAI and Midjourney.
MrBeast described his AI thumbnail tool at launch as "the future of YouTube thumbnails" in a since-deleted video. He was probably right.

TikTok is testing its own version of Instagram's ‘broadcast channels'
TikTok is testing a new messaging tool called 'bulletin boards,' the social network confirmed to TechCrunch on Friday. The feature lets brands and creators share public, one-to-many messages to their followers. Bulletin boards are pretty similar to Instagram's broadcast channels feature that launched in 2023. Just like with broadcast channels on Instagram, only the creator of a bulletin board can post messages, and followers are limited to leaving emoji reactions. Bulletin boards support both text and image posts. The feature was first spotted by Threads user Christina Garnett. The idea behind the feature is to allow creators and brands to share updates, behind-the-scenes content, and engage with their followers in a more direct way. For example, rather than posting updates through a Story or regular post on TikTok, brands and creators can share them on their bulletin board. The feature also lets accounts promote their content by directly sending it to followers. Given that bulletin boards are test feature, it's unknown whether TikTok plans to roll it out out more widely. Plus, it's possible that TikTok may add more functionality. Instagram's broadcast channels, for example, let creators post polls. The launch of bulletin boards is the latest example of one social network borrowing features from another. Back in 2022, TikTok launched Stories, along with support for photos, in order to take on Instagram. Of course, Instagram copied TikTok's entire playbook with the launch of Reels in 2020.

Matthew Goode says he didn't get a James Bond audition for this ‘dark' reason
Matthew Goode knows exactly why he isn't a Martini-sipping 007. The English actor, 47, recently revealed he didn't land the role of James Bond – much less receive an audition. 'I didn't audition. Adamari Lopez bombshell: TV star hired a PI when she thought partner was cheating
Ever felt like snooping on a partner you suspect of cheating? Adamari Lopez has no problem with that. As long as someone is doing the prying, namely a professional. The former telenovela actress confessed around the 16 minute mark of Thursday's 'Ada y Chiqui de Show, ' a newish lifestyle show on YouTube with her pal Chiquibaby (aka Stephanie Himonidis Sedano), that she once hired a PI to do her dirty work. That's short for private investigator. The Univision personality ('Desiguales') and Chiqui were discussing who was the more jealous and toxic of the two, and the topic of affairs came up. 'It's like the old saying, 'Seek and you will find,'' said Lopez, touching her nose. 'You know what happens; we have an intuition.' Lopez went on to say it's better to leave than stay with a significant other who doesn't want to be with you. 'If someone gives me reason to be jealous and to make an accurate, correct and well-thought-out decision you have to gather all your sources,' she said. 'Or else you'll turn into a crazy person.' Lopez explained the process to Chiqui, who appeared shocked: You pay the PI, and he or she gives up the goods, including photos, videos, 'de todo' (everything). The Puerto Rican native claimed that men are really bad at hiding affairs. 'They swear that they know how to do things,' Lopez said. 'But they don't know a damn thing [about how to have a side piece].' The former 'Hoy Dia' star believed the reason many stray is they lack the 'huevos' to communicate if something is wrong. 'Well, if you're looking elsewhere, I can too,' she said. 'Then I can leave the relationship to find my peace, my tranquility and find a relationship that's worth it and one that isn't with a [bleep] who deceives you.' Lopez did not name the ex in question, but she was married to Latin pop star Luis Fonsi for roughly three years and later wrote a memoir about their tumultuous time together. In 2012's 'Viviendo' ('Living'), the breast cancer survivor divulged that the 'Despacito' singer was unfaithful to her, which he vehemently denied. A few years after the split, Lopez fell in love with her 'Mira Quién Baila' partner Toni Costa, with whom she has a daughter, now 10. They broke up in 2021; the reason was not publicly disclosed.
