‘Splitsville' Duo Michael Angelo Covino & Kyle Marvin Challenge Conventional Wisdom On Comedy's Global Reach – Comedy Means Business Podcast
As multi-hyphenates who together have premiered a pair of acclaimed indie comedies at Cannes — first The Climb in 2019, and more recently, Splitsville — Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin have a unique perspective on the old adage that comedies don't travel internationally. 'At the advent of cinema, what were the first blockbusters?' asks Covino in an appearance alongside Marvin on our Comedy Means Business podcast. 'It was like Charlie Chapman and Buster Keaton and a ton of Pre-Code stuff where everyone was naked. But for the most part, it was slapstick. It was silent films where people were falling down or crashing into things or a hose was spraying them in the face, and that is universal and goes worldwide.' More from Deadline From Touring With Vampire Weekend To Helming Tribeca Prize-Winner 'On A String': Isabel Hagen On Forging A Unique Career Synthesizing Music & Comedy – Comedy Means Business Podcast Leanne Morgan & Chuck Lorre Defy Decline Of The Stand-Up-Driven Sitcom With Netflix's 'Leanne' – Comedy Means Business Podcast Joe List & Manager Chris Burns Talk Building Direct-To-Consumer Career & Going Theatrical With 'Small Ball' Special - Comedy Means Business Podcast In the case of 'very specific, topical comedy that is of a place and speaking to zeitgeist only, then sure,' Covino can see a case being made that a comedy might not translate. 'But universal comedy, I think, translates better than any other genre.' Covino and Marvin's films together jointly embody an interest in absurdist comedy elevated by sharp writing and dynamic visuals, which focuses on relationships. While The Climb focuses on a revelation emerging from a long-distance bike ride and the strain that it puts on the relationship between two friends, Splitsville tells the story of two evolving marriages, and another revelation that complicates the relationship between those two couples. When Ashley (Adria Arjona) tells Carey (Marvin), abruptly during a road trip, that she's been repeatedly unfaithful and wants a divorce, Carey turns for solace to married friends Paul (Covino) and Julie (Dakota Johnson), learning that the key to their personal happiness has been to open up their relationship. In a last-ditch attempt to salvage his marriage, Carey pitches Ashley on a similar situation, and chaos ensues. Covino tells me on the podcast that a driving force behind his films with Marvin has been an interest in 'strong point of view' — stories embodying a unique juxtaposition between 'grounded emotions and characters' and 'absurd…and farcical situations.' From Marvin's perspective, the film also highlights their very simple goal of making sure that 'people are entertained' if they take the time to check out their work, in a moment where there are seemingly unlimited options, as far as what people can be consuming or doing with their time. 'I think for us, that means not holding back,' Marvin explains. 'If you can make everything interesting and compelling and believable, why would you hold back on the scenarios or situations that are fun to watch or have things going on that put pressure on character? I think we talk a lot about that entertainment value — what the experience of viewing the movie is going to be, and how we make that experience as fun as possible.' A joke a minute, with some really memorable visual gags, Splitsville is certainly that. It's a film with no clear comp, which while complicating conversations around marketing, affirms to Covino that he and Marvin hit on something good. In their appearance on our podcast, Covino and Marvin discuss the process of creating indie comedies unlike any you'll find elsewhere — one that was helped along, in this case, by Adam Newport-Berra, the cinematographer on the rise who's coming off his first Emmy nomination for his work on The Studio. The pair also discuss test screenings, the idea of cultivating 'future nostalgia' through the theatrical release, their desire to tackle a Christmas movie, and more. Covino directed Splitsville from his script written with Marvin, with the pair also producing. Neon releases the film in limited theaters on August 22 and will go wide with it on September 5. Jillian Michaels goes nuclear on Bob Harper and Netflix's Biggest Loser docuseries: ‘This is false'
Jillian Michaels has broken her silence on Netflix's Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser, refuting claims made in the new docuseries, and is reportedly planning legal action. Michaels, 51, alongside Bob Harper, 60, was one of the personal trainers on the NBC reality show, which aired from 2004 to 2016, following obese people as they attempted to lose weight as quickly as possible using only diet and exercise for a $250,000 cash prize. Michaels, especially, was known for her ruthless attitude towards contestants during workouts, which is put under scrutiny in Netflix's documentary featuring interviews from past contestants. While Harper was involved and interviewed as part of the series, Michaels declined. In the documentary, Michaels's 2013 controversy, when producers accused her of breaking the rules by giving her team caffeine pills without a doctor's permission, is revisited. Elsewhere, Harper tells the cameras that Michaels never reached out to him after he suffered a massive, near-fatal heart attack in 2017. On Tuesday, Michaels turned to Instagram to share alleged email and text chains between herself, The Biggest Loser producers, and Harper. 'This is one email of many that shows: Dr. Huizenga did approve caffeine pills on many seasons of Biggest Loser, Bob Harper not only knew about the caffeine pills the 'stackers fat burner' were actually his suggestion. I wanted to use my brand instead because they were cleaner and had no more than 200mg of caffeine (equivalent to a strong cup of coffee). Caffeine was NEVER banned on The Biggest Loser.' 'Wild how some folks still lie like it's 1985 before texts and email were a thing,' she added. Michaels concluded her post, writing: 'And, the last image is my second to last text ever to Bob Harper. Take from it what you will.' The text shows Michaels's alleged text to Harper, timestamped June 15, 2014. 'I really think it's s****y of you to not even respond to my texts. It's this kind of thing that always makes me so disappointed [in] our relationship,' Michaels reportedly sent to Harper. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Harper acknowledged that he and Michaels 'weren't besties, but we were partners on a television show for a very long time.' He said that her silence 'spoke volumes to me,' adding, 'I would not expect Jillian Michaels to do anything other than what she wants to do.' In a second post, Michaels addressed a claim in the documentary that she told a contestant during a Biggest Loser season finale: 'You're going to make me a millionaire.' 'I want to state unequivocally that this is false,' she wrote on Instagram. 'The full moment was captured on camera, and both the contestant and I were wearing microphones. If such a comment had been made, it would exist on the audio record.' Michaels reportedly told TMZ that she would be speaking to attorney Bryan Freedman — who is currently representing Justin Baldoni in his legal matter with Blake Lively. The publication reports that the trainer is weighing up legal action against Netflix, the producer of the documentary, Harper, and The Biggest Loser's medical advisor, Dr. Robert Huizenga. The Independent has contacted representatives for Michaels, Harper, and Netflix for comment. Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser is available to watch on Netflix.

How Kaylee Gonclaves' Brother Found Love After Sister's Murder
Originally appeared on E! Online Steven Goncalves is leaning on someone special. Nearly one month after Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to life in prison for the 2022 murder of Kaylee Goncalves and her three friends, her brother shared that he and Olivia Vitale—the reporter he met during the investigation—are now engaged. "I interviewed Steven's family," Olivia detailed to NewsNation's Banfield Aug. 18. "This was when Bryan was still not arrested yet." The independent journalist noted that Steve Goncalves—Steven and Kaylee's dad—and his wife Kristi Goncalves learned about her TikTok, which has amassed over 1.3 million followers, through their daughter and reached out to her through email. "Several days before she had passed, she had sent my page to Kristi and was talking about it," Olivia explained. "So they wanted to reach out and do a documentary with me." However, she didn't meet Steven until a year later while she was filming the demolition of the house on King Road, where Kaylee, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin had been murdered. More from E! "But we didn't start dating until almost even a year after that. We were friends first, and then I invited him to—I was filming a documentary with NBC—and I wanted Steven to be a part of it, and it was on set where we bonded." It was this January, while filming the project, that the documentarian and Steven got to know each other. "We were skipping rocks," she recalled. "That was really when we first really met, and we just became best friends after that. And it's history." For Steven, his relationship has been the silver lining of their family's tragic few years. "There is a bright spot," he told host Brian Entin. "I did meet Olivia. I do have my partner for the rest of my life and I'll hold on to that." As for what their future looks like? While Olivia is still interested in sharing compelling stories to help other families, she and Steven have been interested in putting down roots. "Eventually, we would like to homestead, get some chickens, raise a family together," she explained. "I probably won't have as much time to be on the road and I'll be more working for home. But we'll do some stories together and help other families, 'cause that's what it really boils down—helping other people and giving them a voice."
