Bring Her Back sees Sally Hawkins do horror in style

RTÉ News26-07-2025
Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-shortlisted for The Shape of Water and Blue Jasmine, Sally Hawkins really rolls the dice for her latest.
In Bring Her Back, she is cast against type in an Aussie horror and delivers a performance for sibling directors Danny and Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) that's up there with her most acclaimed work - menace to put the wind up even the most seasoned viewers of all things scary.
Foster parent Laura (Hawkins) agrees to take in siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong) when their father dies unexpectedly.
Laura, who is also fostering the disturbed Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), is a bit off from the get-go, empathetic one minute and intimidating the next.
What's she up to? Well, no spoilers here, but if you want a thrill ride, you need to get round to Laura's place.
It's some feat when you can do deeply disturbing and darkly comic in the same movie, but the Philippou brothers pull it off, Danny Philippou's script with co-writer Bill Hinzman (they also collaborated on Talk to Me) delivering plenty of whiplash moments as the walls close in on Andy and Piper.
Hawkins is in the best of on-screen company here. Barratt, an International Emmy winner at age 13 for the BBC Two film Responsible Child, deftly mixes bravery and bewilderment as Billy. Wong, who is visually impaired, had never acted before Bring Her Back, but stakes her claim to a screen career with one of this century's standout debuts. As for Phillips, well, it's incredible to see such screen presence in someone so young.
Bring Her Back has plenty of blood that it doesn't need, and there are two far-fetched moments - involving a swimming pool and a freezer - even for horror, but apart from those gripes, it's another Aussie winnah.

Destination X players thrown into chaos by next location – would you have got it from show clues?

The winning team threw in some red herrings to throw off their fellow contestants - but did they succeed? guess what Destination X players thrown into chaos by next location – would you have got it from show clues? DESTINATION X players were left confused tonight after a series of clues and red herrings, but did you get it right? Rob Brydon is the host of the new BBC show, which sees a group of strangers try to figure out where they are in Europe through a series of clues in a bid to win £100,000. Advertisement 5 Destination X contestants found themselves in chaos and confused over the next location Credit: BBC 5 The third episode saw the group split into two teams - and deception soon occurred Credit: PA Episode two ended with the Matterhorn being the destination, and Rob told viewers in tonight's episode that the bus was moving on to one of the five countries that borders with Switzerland. The windows of the bus are usually blacked out so the group can't get a steer on where they are, but at one point tonight, they were given the chance to look out and saw a roundabout with large red balls in the middle. The first clue had them thoroughly perplexed, but once they boarded a luxury train, they received more. Split into two teams, they headed into their respective carriages and saw a postcard with Oscar-winning actress Audrey Hepburn, a ticket stub with 'Oktober' written on it and a slip of paper with the word 'Dienstabteil' printed. Advertisement Another postcard featured a print which player Saskia asked: "Do we think these are roads or vines or like a forest maybe?" Meanwhile a book had a stamp from the Bavarian State Library. The two teams then went head-to-head in a challenge onboard the train, with the winning group receiving the chance to go into a glass sided carriage to discover more clues. The team that won consisted of Josh, Judith and Saskia, and when they reached the carriage they saw they were moving through a forest. Advertisement The train slowed down for them to see a number of new clues, which included a sign reading 'Donau' and a group of naturists eating large sausages and drinking from big glass beer steins. Meanwhile in the carriage, there was a football magazine with Harry Kane on the front which read 'Harry Kane strikes again' . Fans stunned as THREE Destination X contestants are immediately axed in brutal opening twist The clues all lead to Germany, and the winning team were convinced it was Munich, but decided to throw some red herrings into the mix when they returned to the others, and suggest what they had seen was pointing to Dortmund. But what did you think? Advertisement The episode featured a brutal twist which saw the three players who failed to make it onto the bus in episode one return in a bid to try and win a spot on board. LOSING GAME After a series of head-to-heads with Ben, James and Nick from the losing team, James was sent home there and then. The remaining players then entered their guesses for Destination X into the computer, before Rob revealed the results. It turned out Ben had been furthest from the actual location and would be leaving too. Advertisement And if you had guessed Munich, you were correct! Well done! Axed MasterChef star ‘lined up for I'm A Celebrity appearance' as BBC show controversially returns to air, say bookies

THE axed hosts of MasterChef are hot favourites to get a second chance at TV fame, according to bookies. Shamed MasterChef presenters, Gregg Wallace and John Torode, are heading the odds for the next edition of I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 5 Former MasterChef hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode are in the running for I'm A Celeb, according to bookmakers Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 5 The embattled pair might have a second chance at TV fame after being sacked by the BBC Credit: PA 5 The duo are tipped to enter the jungle Credit: BBC The BBC fired the hosts from the popular cooking program after a report revealed more than 40 historic complaints against Gregg had been upheld, along with a claim that John once used a racist term. Gregg is a short 4/1 to head to the Aussie jungle in November while John is sitting closely behind him at 6/1 odds, according to betting agency William Hill. Other big names tipped to star on I'm A celeb, according to betting odds include, boxer Tyson Fury, TV star Denise Van Outen and Coronation Street star, Will Mellor. The Beeb has decided to go ahead with airing the new season of MasterChef, which features Gregg and John as hosts, because it was recorded before the report was commissioned. 'News that the BBC will be airing the new series of MasterChef with Gregg Wallace and John Torode despite sacking the pair last month has prompted speculation about where they might appear next, and we've added both to our market for who will take part in I'm A Celebrity this year," said Lee Phelps, spokesperson for William Hill. Series 21 of MasterChef hit the BBC today and fans noticed huge changes. As the six amateur cooks made their first dishes for John, 60, and Gregg, 60, they noted how the 'banter' between the hosts was virtually non-existent. Interaction between the hosts and contestants had also been edited back. Instead, the interactions were much more factual about the dishes themselves and the contestants' backgrounds. Gregg had hosted MasterChef alongside John since 2005 and has also fronted other BBC programmes including Inside the Factory and Supermarket Secrets. Gregg and John Gone In an explosive sit down interview with The Sun, Gregg said that he was not a 'groper, a sex pest or a flasher'. He also backed John, who had an allegation of racism upheld against him, during the probe into Wallace's behaviour on July 15. Gregg told The Sun: 'He is not a racist.' The dossier into Wallace's behaviour included a complaint that an unnamed person used a racial phrase once several years ago. Torode confirmed it referred to him, but said: 'I have absolutely no recollection of this, and I do not believe that it happened.' 5 The new I'm A Celeb series is due to start in November Credit: Rex

The house even features eclectic pieces of artwork around the home which could be creations of the rocker as he is known to be a keen fan of designing art. But can you work out who the owner is? For the past 30 years, the house was understood to have become a rundown shack according to locals but it has recently had new life breathed into it ahead of its listing on AirBnB. The mystery man who owns the house is none other than Silverchair frontman and rocker, Daniel Johns. Located in the Newcastle suburb of Australia, the home has been turned into a blue and pink beach shack. Neighbours recently told the Daily Mail how the home had become awash with activity of renovation. Speaking to the publication, one neighbour said: "[Daniel] goes away for long periods of time - no one knows where he disappears to - but he always comes back." Looking out onto the Merewether ocean, one of the home's bedrooms looks out onto the stunning scenary. It comes complete with its very own balcony with fake grass and a seating area. Inside, the interiors are decorated with graffiti-style artwork and a slew of pop art pictures. Inside Airbnb capital of UK where fed-up locals have no neighbours Chic furnishings surround the plush bedroom - perfect for a night's sleep by the Aussie ocean. Another cool addition is the spray-painted guitar hung in the hallway - which could very likely be one of Daniel's own instruments. The AirBnB listing confirms the home is pet-friendly but smoking is outlawed despite Daniel being a well-publicised smoker and vaper. One neighbour even said of his habit: "You see him smoking on the balcony." 6 Silverchair rocker Daniel Johns is the house's owner Credit: instagram/@danieljohnshq 6 Fans can now stay there for £219 a night Credit: instagram/@danieljohnshq The home, which comprises two bedrooms and one bathroom, is understood to be mostly booked up until the end of the year. Daniel rose to fame in the band after they achieved huge success in the mid 90s. The rocker was also well known for his marriage to Natalie Imbruglia. The pair were married between 2003 and 2008.
