Chicharito faces backlash in Mexico for very sexist remarks on gender roles
Mexico City, Jul 24 (AP) Soccer star Javier 'Chicharito" Hernandez is facing a backlash from Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum and others for remarks posted on his social media accounts about gender roles.
'Chicharito is a very good soccer player," Sheinbaum said at a news conference Wednesday. 'But when it comes to his opinion on women … he still has a lot to learn." She described the former Mexico international's ideas as 'very sexist." The former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker, who plays for Chivas, is injured and missed the first two matches of Mexico's Apertura tournament.
Over the weekend, he posted several reels and videos, mainly on Instagram.
'Don't be afraid to be women, to allow yourselves to be led by a man," the 37-year-old Hernandez said. 'Women, you are failing, you are eradicating masculinity, making society hypersensitive." Hernandez, the all-time leading scorer for the Mexican national team with 52 goals, returned to Mexico last year on a two-year deal with Chivas, the team where he began his professional career in 2006.
'You women need to learn to accept and honor masculinity," he said in another one of his posts.
In another, he said to the camera: 'You want a man to provide, but for you, cleaning is patriarchal oppression… interesting." Sheinbaum, a 63-year-old scientist, was elected last year as the first female president in the country's 200-year history.
'I'm a mother, I'm a grandmother, I'm also a housewife," the president added Wednesday. 'But I'm also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. Women can be whatever we want." Hernandez is a divorced father of two who has a habit of kneeling in the middle of the pitch to pray before the start of matches. He began creating content for a YouTube channel where he portrayed his life as a player with West Ham and his marriage.
Hernandez had a low profile on social media before hiring life coach Diego Dreyfus, to whom many attribute much of 'Chicharito's" new persona.
Criticism followed his recent statements, with some urging him to limit himself to soccer, given that his performance since returning to the Mexican league last year has not been as expected.
Hernandez, who also played for Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham and Sevilla, has scored just two goals in 25 matches in his first two tournaments back in Mexico.
A few hours after the president's remarks, Hernandez was fined by the by the Gender and Diversity Commission of the Mexican Soccer Federation and by Chivas.
'A few days ago, on the social platform Javier Chicharito Hernández made statements that promote sexist stereotypes that are considered media violence and go against gender equality in the sport," a statement from the federation said.
The federation did not disclose the amount of the fine but said that a more severe penalty awaits if he does it again.
Chivas didn't mention Hernandez by name in announcing its fine, only saying that the team is against 'behavior that reinforces stereotypes that limit the freedom, respect, and full development of all people, both inside and outside of sports." This is the first time that the federation has sanctioned a player for misogynistic comments. Earlier this year businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the owner of the Mazatlán and Puebla clubs, made harsh statements about female journalists and was left unpunished.
Chicharito has been banned from the national team since 2019 after he, alongside other players, organized a non-authorized party in New York after a game against the United States. (AP) ATK ATK

Thailand-Cambodia clashes enter Day 3: Amid calls for ceasefire, what is the situation now?
What began as an exchange of fire earlier this week has now spiralled into one of the deadliest conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia in over a decade. Despite statements from both sides supporting a ceasefire, skirmishes have continued across multiple points on the border, with reports of mortar fire, small arms exchanges, and new troop deployments. Here's what we know about the conflict so far: Over 30 people have died and more than 130,000 have been displaced since the violence began, including civilians on both sides of the border. The most recent flare-up on Saturday occurred in Thailand's Trat province, a coastal area more than 100 km from the initial confrontation zones. While both Bangkok and Phnom Penh claim to have acted in self-defence, they are trading accusations of deliberate aggression. The Thai government reported the use of newly planted land mines on its territory, while Cambodia described Thai incursions as 'unlawful military attacks.' The root of the current conflict lies in a centuries-old border demarcation issue that has repeatedly defied peaceful settlement. The Thailand-Cambodia land border stretches over 800 km, much of it poorly demarcated, winding through dense jungle and dotted with ancient ruins. These temples —particularly the 11th-century Preah Vihear and the smaller but still symbolically powerful Ta Moan Thom — lie at the heart of the dispute. Although the International Court of Justice awarded Preah Vihear to Cambodia in 1962, the surrounding territory has remained a flashpoint. In 2008, when Cambodia sought UNESCO World Heritage status for the temple, tensions reignited violently. Thailand disputes the ownership of land adjacent to the temples, citing maps drawn by colonial-era French cartographers as inconsistent. Cambodia, on the other hand, views any challenge to the ICJ ruling as an attack on its sovereignty. (Photo: AP) Over 130,000 people have been displaced across Thailand and Cambodia in just three days, many fleeing in haste from villages near the border. Local officials in Thailand's Sisaket province say entire towns are nearly deserted, with residents abandoning homes, farms, and businesses in search of safety. Makeshift shelters and emergency accommodations have been established in school buildings and temples, while humanitarian aid groups struggle to reach conflict zones. In Cambodia, civilians in the northwest provinces of Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear have reported fleeing under shellfire. In interviews, displaced residents have expressed fear and frustration. Both Thailand and Cambodia have sought to frame the conflict to its diplomatic advantage. Thailand insists that it is acting defensively, pointing to land mines allegedly planted on Thai soil and to military attacks that it claims were initiated by Cambodia. Thai officials have emphasized their preference for bilateral resolution, accusing Phnom Penh of attempting to 'internationalise' the conflict. Cambodia, in contrast, has framed the confrontation as a clear act of aggression by Thailand. It has called on the international community to condemn what it calls 'deliberate and unlawful military attacks,' and to support its call for outside arbitration. Cambodian diplomats have also highlighted Thailand's refusal to recognize the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice as evidence of its unwillingness to resolve the dispute fairly. The conflict reached the United Nations Security Council on Friday, where both Thailand and Cambodia presented their cases. Thailand's ambassador, Cherdchai Chaivaivid, accused Cambodia of deliberate aggression and detailed recent injuries caused by new land mines. Cambodia, in turn, painted Thailand as the aggressor and called for global condemnation. The UN has urged both sides to de-escalate and engage in dialogue. Cambodia has called for an 'immediate ceasefire' with Thailand, the country's envoy to the United Nations has said. 'Cambodia asked for an immediate ceasefire — unconditionally — and we also call for the peaceful solution of the dispute,' Cambodia's UN ambassador Chhea Keo has said. On the other hand, Thailand's foreign ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura told news agency AFP that Bangkok was open to talks, possibly aided by Malaysia. 'We are ready, if Cambodia would like to settle this matter via diplomatic channels, bilaterally, or even through Malaysia, we are ready to do that. 'In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas,' the advisory read. On Friday, the Indian embassy in Thailand issued a similar advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid travelling to seven provinces in Thailand. The seven provinces include Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buriram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi and Trat. The Preah Vihear and Ta Moan Thom temples, built during the Khmer Empire and now perched near the modern-day border, are revered by both Thais and Cambodians. The Preah Vihear Temple, in particular, has been a source of diplomatic tension since the 1962 ICJ ruling granted Cambodia ownership of the structure. However, Thailand disputes ownership of the adjacent land, arguing that historical maps and treaties support its claim. In 2008, when Cambodia succeeded in listing Preah Vihear as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Thai nationalists saw the move as a provocation, triggering renewed skirmishes. One of the most alarming developments in the recent escalation has been the reported use of new land mines. Thailand has accused Cambodia of planting mines in its territory, resulting in injuries to Thai soldiers in mid-July and again this past week. Cambodia denies the accusation and has countered that Thailand has mobilised heavy weaponry and troops along the border in violation of international norms. Satellite imagery and witness reports suggest that both sides are engaged in rapid militarisation. A video of spiritual speaker Swami Aniruddhacharya has sparked outrage, especially among women, over his alleged derogatory comments towards 25-year-old women. The remarks, reportedly made during a religious event in Vrindavan's Gauri Gopal Ashram, have led to protests and sharp criticism from many groups. The clip, which is being widely circulated online, features while speaking at the event. He reportedly said, 'Ab ladki late hai 25 saal ki. Ab 25 saal ki ladki chaar jagah mu maar chuki hoti hai. Sab nahi par bahut. Aur wo 25 saal ki jab aati hai toh puri jawan hoke aati hai. Jab jawan hoke aayegi toh swabhavik hai ki uski jawani kahi fisal jaegi (Now girls are marrying at the age of 25. By then, many, not all, have already been with multiple men. When a girl comes at 25, she is fully grown. Naturally, her youth may slip away somewhere)." He also referred to the Sonam Raghuvanshi and Muskan Rastogi cases, saying, 'Jaise ki ek honeymoon manane gayi, par wo kisi aur ke sath reh chuki thi, uske sath chakkar tha. Wo drum wala case purana nahi hua jyada (Like a woman went on her honeymoon, but she had already been with someone else. That case involving the drum is not even old)." He also allegedly said that girls should be married off at the age of 14 so that they can adjust better within the family. After the footage circulated online, widespread anger started, particularly from women and social groups. According to Navbharat Times, the women advocates of the Mathura Bar Association called the remarks anti-constitutional and sexist and submitted a complaint to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). The advocates also staged a protest at the Collectorate and demanded strict legal action against Aniruddhacharya. Gunjan Sharma, state president of Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Sangharsh Nyas, strongly reacted to the video. As per Navbharat Times, she said that she will kill such an Acharya with her shoe. Meanwhile, Pandit Dinesh Falahari, the main petitioner in the Krishna Janmabhoomi case, also condemned the remarks and stated that such insensitive comments do not suit a person in a spiritual role. Swami Aniruddhacharya Issues An Apology As backlash intensified, Aniruddhacharya released a video apology through his official Instagram account. In it, he claimed that the viral video had been edited to create a misleading narrative. He said only a portion of his speech was circulated, while the rest, which offered clarification, was removed. In his statement, he said, 'Even if my incomplete words have hurt anyone, I apologise. Whether it is a man or a woman, both should be character-oriented. My comments were directed at some individuals, not the entire society." He reiterated that this clarification was edited out of the circulating video. When asked about the authenticity of the video, Aniruddhacharya suggested the possibility of AI manipulation. He said, 'Nowadays, it is the era of AI. Anyone can present my words however they like, using AI, and the world will think it is the truth." Despite the apology, protests from various women's and social organisations continue.
