Honda debuts its first full EV - e:N1

NZ Autocar15-05-2025

The e:N1 has dotted down in New Zealand and gone on sale. Honda promised as much at the launch of the new Civic and were good to their word.
It is not strictly brand new per se, having been available overseas since 2023. And in most other markets it is known as e:Ny1. Here, the nomenclature is simpler.
Whatever, this is Honda's first EV to go on sale in New Zealand. And it is the first from its e:N family of EVs. They didn't offer the cute wee Honda e city car, their first effort. And that was probably because it cost too much. A few have made their way to our shores as grey imports. It is no longer in production anyway.
The e:N1 is, we guess by the name, for anyone. That's if they have a spare $52k to spend, plus $995 for ORCs. That's only a $6k premium on HR-V, by the by. There's just the single model coming here, and it is well appointed with sports leather seats, wireless Apple CarPay, 18-inch alloys and the fullHonda Sensing Suite safety arsenal. Android auto is also present, but isn't wireless.
While it kind of looks like an electric version of the HR-V – evidently it shares some body panels – this rides on a dedicated electric platform.
So down to tin tacks. It features a 69kWh battery pack which evidently gives e:N1 'up to 500km' of range. That's probably more like 400-450km in the real world, and 412km WLTP. It can supposedly run from 0-100km/h in 7.6sec. Helping with that is kerb weight of around 1730kg.
Its single motor is good for 150kW and 310Nm of torque and it spins the front wheels. Mean energy use is around 17kWh/100km. Charging from 30 to 80 per cent takes around 40 minutes with DC fast charging. Expect almost seven hours (overnight then) for a full recharge using an 11kW wallbox.
Honda says its first EV here is 'engaging, joyful, fun to drive'. Just like its other models then. But it's designed to be practical too. The firm says it's a car that just happens to be an EV. It features the usual three drive modes for an electric vehicle, Eco, Normal and Sport.
The interior is designed for driver and passenger convenience and comfort. There's an eight-way power adjustment for the driver's seat, steering wheel-mounted controls, dual zone climate control featuring a dust/pollen filter, accessory power outlets and a 348L boot (expandable to 1176L).
The exterior features slimline LED headlights, black-cut alloy wheels, a sporty bumper, wide charging-port door, and full-width LED tail light strip.
The charging port is in the middle of the front bumper, which makes access to a public charger easier. A three-colour light system gives you real-time information on the status of the charge. In other vehicles, that's generally only available inside, somewhere on the dash.
On that, there is a 15.1 inch central touchscreen divided into three zones for infotainment and camera, vehicle settings and climate control. A proximity key, alarm and walk away locking help with peace of mind, as does a warranty of up to five years/unlimited km, while the EV battery is covered by an eight-year or 160,000km warranty.
The Managing Director of Honda New Zealand, Ms Carolyn McMahon, says 'This momentous introduction represents the start of a significant journey for our brand and underscores Honda's commitment to a sustainable future. This innovative product combines our dynamic philosophy with a state-of-the-art electric platform, delivering a unique driving experience for today's electrified landscape. We look forward to our valued customers experiencing it firsthand.'

Nelson Rider Basalaj Leads A Honda 1-2 At Nationals

JUNE 8, 2025: South Islander Bailey Basalaj led a Honda 1-2 finish to the top of the series podium as his year's New Zealand Enduro Championships wrapped up in the North Island. The 21-year-old industrial refrigeration engineer from Nelson has been racing at the ultimate level for many years now, and on Sunday he finally broke through to achieve his career-long ambition, but he had a fight on his hands with fellow Honda rider Blake Affleck making a late charge for the title. Basalaj won the opening round of the 2025 New Zealand Enduro Championships near Nelson in April, but he was still taking nothing for granted as he headed to round two near Whanganui over the King's Birthday Weekend, barely a week ago. He managed to win again over the weekend near Whanganui and, with two outright victories in a row, it set Basalaj up for 'a more relaxed third and final round', two back-to-back days of racing, near Martinborough on Saturday and Sunday. Basalaj finished runner-up in the 'sprint' segment of the competition held on Saturday, beaten to the finish by Affleck, from Owaka, south of Balclutha, and it was the same story again the following day, during the more-arduous long-loop phase, with Affleck once more winning ahead of Basalaj. This gave Affleck overall honours for the weekend, but, more importantly, it was enough for Basalaj – with his eventual 1-1-2 scorecard for the series – to wrap up the premier Expert Grade title overall. Second overall for the series was Affleck (with 3-4-1 round results over the series) and New Plymouth's Josh Houghton (2-6-3) completed the Exert Grade podium, while Whangamata's Ethan Jameson (4-3-11) and Amberley's Nathan Hodge (6-5-5) rounded out the top five for 2025. Best of the Intermediate Grade riders at the weekend was Masterton's George Callaghan, followed by Masterton's Dave Edmonds and Tokoroa's Mark Newton. For the series overall it finished with Callaghan on top (with a 2-1-1 score-card over the three rounds), followed by Whanganui pair Grant McKinlay (1-6-5) and Jason Wakeling (0-2-7). Best of the women this season was Stratford's Megan Collins, who finished a highly-creditable fourth overall in the Intermediate Grade. 2025 New Zealand Enduro Champs calendar: Round 1: April 25-26, Nelson. Day 1, 725 Dovedale Road, Day 2 Moutere Highway, 3.8km west of the Redwood Valley Hall. Round 2: June 1-2, near Whanganui. Round 3: June 7-8, Ruakokoputuna Hall, Martinborough District, South Wairarapa.

New more efficient hybrids coming for Honda

Honda is developing new hybrid models powered by what it says is 'the world's most efficient' combustion powertrain. It is in part a response to slow EV sales. At least 13 new Hondas will arrive between 2027 and 2030 in a revised range of hybrids. Kicking things off are replacements for Civic and Jazz. The new efficient hybrids will help the company to navigate the 'transition period' between ICE power and electric. Announcing the strategy rethink recently, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe noted that 'demand for hybrid-electric vehicles is growing'. He added 'the expansion of the EV market has fallen behind the initial projection'. Mibe felt that the relaxation of CO2 emissions in the US was to blame for the slow growth of EVs. Honda has not said specifically which cars will be first to receive the new powertrain. It is expected to be of the non-plug-in variety and will come in 1.5- and 2.0-litre forms. That matches the capacities of the engines in the current Jazz and Civic. Both are due substantial updates in the coming years. The 1.5-litre version will provide peak torque over a rev range that's 40 per cent broader than currently to maximise efficiency without compromising driving pleasure. Check out our review of Honda's HR-V Sport. Both variants will deliver the best thermal performance of any combustion engine on the market, according to Honda. Meanwhile, the hybrid system's electric motor is smaller to reduce weight and improve packaging. Honda says to expect a 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy. For reference, the current 1.5-litre Jazz returns 3.8L/100km while the 2.0-litre Civic manages 5.1L/100km. Both cars will utilise a new platform that promises better driver engagement, comfort and safety. Civic will be 90kg lighter than the current structure and the bodies applied to the frame will bring a further 10 per cent saving in weight. Moreover, the models based on the new platform will share at least 60 per cent of their parts, such as the engine bay and rear floor. The new hybrid powertrains, meanwhile, will be 30 per cent cheaper to produce than those launched in 2023. Despite cutting its planned investment into EVs, Honda remains committed to their development. 'We would like to see the battery EV business as a pillar of our business from 2030 onward,' CEO Toshihiro Mibe told investors. The 0 Series of electric cars due to be launched in the US next year represents an effective reset of the company's approach to the market, following a poor showing from the E hatchback and disappointing e:Ny1 crossover sales overseas. The electric saloon and upcoming SUV usher in a new design language for Honda that will not be shared with the hybrids. However, a new emblem will be seen on all new Hondas. Toshinobu Minami, head of Honda's design centre, said 'Dynamic and simple will be key words for all models in future.'
