Teluk Intan Municipal Council reverses decision on vandal after talks with MIC
PETALING JAYA: A man who was arrested for allegedly vandalising the Teluk Intan Municipal Council building has reached an agreement with the council, enabling him to rent the shop lot again.
MIC vice president Datuk T. Murugiah stated that the municipal council had initially declined to lease a shop lot to a man named Thevar because of a previous incident in which he reportedly damaged the entrance of the council office.
"I held a meeting with the council's president, Zairul Akmal Kasim, during which I explained the situation and appealed for reconsideration. After a positive and constructive discussion, he agreed to allow the shop lot to be rented again to Thevar," said Murugiah in a statement on Monday (May 26).
"Furthermore, I respectfully asked the president to consider withdrawing the police report filed against Thevar," he added, noting that the council agreed to consult with the Investigating Officer on the potential withdrawal of the report.

On May 8, Thevar allegedly used a sledgehammer to damage the council office's entrance because the council erected a tent in front of his watch repair shop during the Chitra Pournami celebration.
On the same day, Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said that the 63-year-old suspect was taken into custody after a complaint was lodged at 10:35am.
"Investigations found that the suspect arrived at the scene on a motorcycle, parked in front of the council's building, and then took a sledgehammer to break the glass doors.
"After the incident, the suspect attempted to leave the scene and head to his shop in Jalan Bandar, Teluk Intan, but was apprehended and handed over to the police," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- The presentation of issues regarding drug threats, progress reports, and discussions to expand the scope of parliamentary cooperation will be among the main agenda at the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Advisory Council on Dangerous Drugs (AIPACODD) 2025, hosted by Malaysia, in Kuantan from June 10 to 12. The theme 'Uniting Parliament for an Inclusive and Sustainable ASEAN in Addressing Contemporary Drug Challenges' aligns with this year's Malaysian ASEAN chairmanship theme, which emphasises inclusivity and sustainability. According to a statement from the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat) today, the meeting will be officiated by the AIPA president and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, while Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Dr Ramli Mohd Nor will be appointed as the chairperson of the 8th AIPACODD Meeting. "Among the main agenda of the meeting are a panel session featuring representatives from the ASEAN Senior Officials on Drug Matters (ASOD), National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK), and the Ministry of Health Malaysia, alongside progress report presentations by all AIPA member country parliaments," according to the statement. Also scheduled is a discussion session on the transformation of AIPACODD's role in addressing cross-border crime and the preparation and validation of the meeting's draft resolution. Meanwhile, the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives also announced that in conjunction with the meeting, a royal banquet will be held on June 10 in Kuantan, with the consent of the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah. "This royal banquet is the highest honour of the nation to the ASEAN parliamentary representatives, and the Sultan of Pahang's presence reflects the royal institution's support for the strategic role of parliamentary diplomacy in addressing the drug threat and building a safer and more sustainable future for the region," said the statement. AIPACODD was officially established in 2017 as a platform to strengthen the role of parliaments in addressing drug issues through policy monitoring, information sharing and regional cooperation. Through the AIPACODD platform, AIPA continues to play a key role in driving the coordination of ASEAN parliamentary collective efforts in addressing drug issues across social, economic, health, and regional security dimensions.

Police arrest man for alleged molestation in Bayan Lepas
GEORGE TOWN: Police have confirmed the arrest of a 24-year-old foreign man who allegedly molested a woman near an apartment in Bayan Lepas. A video of the suspect being confronted recently went viral online. George Town OCPD ACP Abdul Rozak Muhammad reported that the arrest followed a police report lodged by the 38-year-old victim at about 12.45am on Tuesday. According to Abdul, the woman claimed the suspect groped her breast during the incident at about 11.15pm on Monday (June 2). "We have arrested the suspect following the report, and he is currently being remanded to assist in investigations under Section 354 of the Penal Code for outraging a person's modesty. "The case will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action once investigations are completed," he said on Thursday (June 5). Abdul also confirmed that police were acting on the viral video showing the suspect being questioned and expressed appreciation for the public's assistance in apprehending the suspect.

Court reserves decision on Tommy Thomas' bid to recuse judge in Shahrir's suit
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today reserved its decision on former attorney-general (A-G) Tan Sri Tommy Thomas' bid to recuse a High Court judge from presiding over Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad's malicious prosecution suit against him. A three-member bench led by Datuk Supang Lian said the court required time to deliberate on the "weighty and substantial" issues raised by both parties. The other members of the panel were appellate court judges Datuk Faizah Jamaludin and Datuk Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin. Lawyer Allan Gomez, representing the former A-G, submitted that High Court judge Roz Mawar Rozain should recuse herself from hearing the case due to potential bias. He said that the judge had made premature and unsubstantiated determinations in pre-trial rulings that went beyond the pleadings, potentially compromising the integrity of the upcoming trial. Meanwhile, Datuk Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin, who appeared for Shahrir, contended that Roz Mawar had made no such determinations. He submitted that the judge merely ruled the matters raised deserved to be ventilated further in a full trial. The appellate court fixed June 12 for case management. Roz Mawar had earlier dismissed Thomas' recusal application in January this year, ruling that it lacked merit. This followed her decision in July 2024 to also reject Thomas' application to strike out Shahrir's suit. She ruled that the former Johor Baru member of Parliament's claim did not amount to an abuse of court process and should be heard in full. Shahrir filed the suit against Thomas, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Latheefa Koya, the MACC and the government, citing malicious prosecution, malicious investigation, and wrongful arrest. He alleged that Thomas had prematurely authorised his prosecution before the investigation was complete, particularly in relation to a charge for allegedly failing to declare RM1 million received from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the Inland Revenue Board. Shahrir was fully acquitted in January 2023 after the prosecution withdrew the case.
